The last episode aired months after the others and was heavily marketed as a special event. Then it was 11 minutes of them arguing at the airport. Made it even funnier, imo.

Here's a few fun facts about every episode: 1. Desmond’s Big Day Out - This episode first aired on Adult Swim on April Fools Day 2020. The writers Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel worked on the pilot in 2019, and it was released during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rest of the episodes were made during the pandemic, meaning every conversation or argument Pim and Charlie had was done over Skype, Discord and other online meetings. The rest of the episodes came out in 2022. Originally after the Daveland scene, they would go to other places to help Desmond feel better and Pim would get more and more depressed as the day went on. The network said to either cut or edit the scene because it was a bit repetitive. 2. Mr. Frog - Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel said that Mr. Frog eating people, and Glep spitting on people on set were most likely not special effects and they did spit or eat people irl. Adult Swim released a puppet version of this episode on April Fools Day 2024 as part of their annual April Fools stunt. You can watch the KZread video they posted. 3. Shrimp’s Odyssey - The song during the montage with Pim and Jennifer (who he thought was Shrimpina) was actually a cover of an already existing song. One member of the crew kept scrolling on Spotify and this song fit the montage perfectly. Adult Swim released a sockpuppet version of this episode on April Fools Day 2024 as part of their annual April Fools stunt. You can watch the KZread video they posted. 4. A Silly Halloween Special - Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel said it took several hours to find the perfect alleyway in Australia to film the beginning scene. 5. Who Violently Murdered Simon S. Salty? - There was originally a character called Nugget that made it past the script and recording, but the character had to be cut for time. The episode was originally about 2 minutes too long for a normal Smiling Friends episode. They sacrificed Nugget, because his character was a bit similar to some of the other characters in the episode. 6. Enchanted Forest - The only episode of Season 1 to not have The Boss a speaking role. 7. Frowning Friends - Originally the Frowning Friends were going to come down by a satellite falling from space in the beginning, before being changed to them moving across the street. 8. Charlie Dies and Doesn’t Come Back - You can see Dave (the owner of Daveland) at Charlie’s funeral, meaning Dave might actually care about Charlie, at least a little. Adult Swim released a paper mache version of this episode on April Fools Day 2024 as part of their annual April Fools stunt. You can watch the KZread video they posted. 9. The Smiling Friends Go to Brazil! - Adult Swim promoted this episode as being a special, even though the Smiling Friends only stay at the airport for 11 minutes before eventually flying back home. It was meant to air on April Fools Day as part of Adult Swim’s annual April Fools stunt, but was delayed to August 2022 for reasons unknown. The phone call with The Boss is a real phone call recording. They made Marc M. walk around the streets of LA to make the phone call believable. They also wanted him to walk into a convenience store so that they can hear the ding sound when the doors open.

@@MikeyVenture yea also I just found out in the Enchanted Forest episode Mip is based off of Ricardo Lopez aka the Bjork Stalker. He's known for attempting to murder the Icelandic singer Bjork by mailing a package to her with a bomb back in 1996. He made a bunch of videos, with the last video resulting in him shooting himself. The police found his dead body 4 days later, and watched the tapes he made. The package was found and detonated safely before it reached Bjork.

Funny you mention that it reminds you of Newgrounds, cuz both of the creators of the show are huge Newgrounds animators/fans lmao

My favourite thing about Smiling Friends compared to other shows like it is its fundamental optimism. While often absurd and dark, it isn't drenched in cynicism, and has lots of little wholesome moments, like Pim's "picking up twigs" song, or Charlie actually going to China to bury the Century Egg. The humour in those moments comes from us being trained to EXPECT cynicism from our animated adult comedies, and getting blindsided with something earnest and sweet.

When I saw the Mr. Frog episode I was like "It's a TMZ reporter, Frogs eat bugs and parasites, he's just following his instincts." Then I found out he was cancelled because he FAILED to eat the TMZ reporter and I was like "Ah, okay. All is right with the world."

The skit about mip being a stalker and making a bomb for the princess is actually a reference to the Bjork stalker. He was a deranged fan obsessed with the Icelandic singer Bjork and sent a packed bomb to her address in hopes that it would kill her so that they could be together in heaven. He filmed a bunch of tapes that show his spiraling mental state, with his last one showing him committing suicide.

The best part about episode 9 is that generally airports will ground and delay all of their flights in the case of an airplane crash so the airplane flying into the mountain means they're gonna be stuck there for hours

The animation you liked of the humans is called rotoscoping. Its the same animation technique they used for Snow white.

Charlie's grandma gobbling on that candy is probably my favorite out-of-pocket moment

Re: Helium They've recently found a lot more helium, devised more efficient ways of obtaining it, and even engineered methods of creating it from scratch. Turns out it wasn't all too difficult, it just wasn't a problem that needed solving until recently

On that same note, in Charlie Dies And Goes To Hell, Grandfather Glep who says that Christianity was right was voiced by Joshua Tomar, who's Jewish. I can easily picture Zach snickering like mad while helping write both that and Lyle's Puerto Rican scenes.

Btw pim's sister' boyfriend is voiced by tom flup the creator of newgrounds

2:34 funny you mention that, co-crearor Zach Hadel, better known as Psychicpebbles was on Newgrounds many years ago before going to KZread.

if you go back and scan the credits there’s a load of great guest voices, quite a few internet famous types

Zack Hadel aka psychicpebbles used to be on Newgrounds along with his friends and acquaintances that cameoed on the show, including David Firth (Shrimp) of Salad Fingers fame and Chris O'Neill of OneyPlays!

This show is set in philly too!

What i like is that a lot of the episodes start with a seemingly insignificant one off joke that ends up playing into the end of the episode. The weird alien thing on the tv of the first episode. Pim's bad eyesight in the shrimp episode. Charlie's whole deal with face paint ruining your life in the halloween episode. The Renaissance men in the frowning friends episode. Its a very present idea in the show.

This reminds you of Newgrounds because Zach and Michael both were Newgrounds animators. Their dark senses of humor have also clearly been brought over with them, mixed with Oneyplays and their senses of humor. That entire friend group is hilarious. A TON of the voices are people from Oneyplays, Pregame Discharge, Zach's own past collabs / friendships he's built and Michael's connections in the industry. They are an amazing powerhouse duo and backed by all their friends, Smiling Friends is legit one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. Also Jimmy Fallon in that Jimmy Fallon bit was voiced by Lyle Rath / Lyle McDouchebag. Same guy that voiced Master Chief in several Machinima parodies that appeared on Newgrounds and eeeearly KZread. Dude has an iconic voice.

Yeah Gilbert voiced god. Also it was his last voice acting job before he passed. Godspeed godfreid, godspeed.

To answer you question regarding Pim's age, he's 33. We also know the ages of the other three Smiling Friends: Charlie is 27, Alan is 24 and Glep is 1695 years old.

52:20 Unprofessional Nerd here. The American Federal/National Helium Reserve is running out, not Earth's Reserve, that's still a very long way from running out. During the 1920's, America made Helium a strategic reserve for airships. Thinking future wars will be fought with hundreds and maybe thousands of airships, Planes turned out to be better. It became really useful for missiles, computers and coolants for thingamabobs in the 60's. Helium is a by-product of Natural gas, So to refill the reserve they had somewhat depleted, they passed a law in the 1960's for companies to conserve the helium that normally is just burned out/released. Until congress stepped in, Turn out. Keeping helium for decades cost a lot of money. About 1.4 Billions. They passed the helium privatization act in 1995, selling the reserve at extremely low price. The 'Let's make balloons and let them fly into the sky to be wasted' kinda low price. So low that pretty much all companies, who's main market was Helium, closed down. Only a few Natural Gas companies preserves the Helium, which is still a loss for them. But they know in a couple of decades the price will 'Stabilize' to a point where every companies will eventually extract the Helium rather than to waste. The last bit of the Federal reserve was sold out this year in March to Messer Group.

funny you mention newgrounds, one of the creators is PsychicPebbles, a very famous newgrounds animator, friends of OneyNG, I camt speak much on Michael, not as familiar with his work, but probably also from newgrounds

I heard a theory about why Mr Frog was cancelled after putting the TMZ reporter in his mouth but not after eating the Family Guy producer. Apparently its because Mr Frog didnt eat the TMZ reporter even after having him in his mouth for 7 minutes. It broke the immersion of the show. Also the singer in the 3rd episode was the guy who performed the original Pokemon theme.

Shrimp is voiced by the same guy as Salad Fingers

I love how he immediately assumed Charlie and Alan are together
