I don't understand how in the world I'm so late to the Brandi Carlile train, but I've been mesmerized ever since I discovered her months ago singing with Leslie Jordan. I had seen her here or there before, but for whatever reason, that clip made me look into her. I'm sort of shell-shocked. I think she might be the most empathetic and generous musician I've ever seen. I teach theater, and we're always after the students to "sing about what [they] know". Brandi doesn't have an inauthentic bone in her body, and sings from her soul. She sings about what she knows. You can't teach that; an artist has to arrive there on their own. She also just loves music, as is evidenced by all of the people she performs with and all of the covers she sings. I'm really astounded. Truly.
