Avg Dev salary in the UK is £40-60k which is $43-65k. If your really good you can get 80-100k in London but you need to be genius level. This equates to about $88-110k a year. London is more expensive than Seattle! So new graduates at Microsoft are making more than top level senior Veterans in the UK. That's crazy!!

@@ersandy4u Its competition honestly. You don't give me what I"m asking for, no problem. I'll stay while I look for another and likely will land one easily. Its why these big tech give so much perks besides big compensation such as free breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and unlimited drinks all day as long as you're in the office. Anything to show their appreciation and in return they hope you would be more dedicated to your role instead of just the I only work here mentality. And if after all these you're still unhappy then you're not the right fit. Happy employees are more productive.

Dang when I joined Microsoft Redmond in 2019 the typical offer for new grads was 109k base, 120k stocks (3.5 year vesting), 30k bonus. Surprised that it didn’t go up much with inflation.

Having worked on various projects across a bunch of orgs, the advice of "learn how to showcase your skills in a sentence" is spot on. this is useful in discussions with recruiters, the interview loop members, the hiring manager, and when you are explaining to others that your idea is the right one and why. a decade at msft was amazing. i would never return but I regret none of it.

@@younesslaoui8327 That chapter in my life was fun but is done. I moved on to startups, traveled as a consultant around the world, etc. The doors that open from being successful at a place like MSFT is not a thing to waste or take for granted.

i self studied for 7 months and landed a position at twitch. even though i was brand new to the whole industry, i still negotiated the salary and bonus and was able to convince them to raise the salary a bit more and the bonus A LOT more! know your worth people! even if you're new to the industry with no CS degree like me!!!!

@@NobaDyKnowZ i started with freecodecamp then moved to the odin project and then some courses on Udemy like Jonas’ Javascript course and Max’s React course. then i took a Java course on udemy as well (i forget the name but it’s the highest rated course on udemy) and then practiced data structures and algo’s starting with CS50 harvard course, some youtube videos and colt steele’s JS data structures and algo course. studied about 6-8 hours every day and eventually joined twitch as a backend developer. to answer the other persons question: i did not do a bootcamp because they’re too expensive and i make close to $200k TC

AHHH. I'm dying over this woman's explanation on how she requested a raise. She noticed that salaries were 15% higher than what she was making, but she thought they wouldn't give her that, so she decided to ask for 11 and they replied with 7. It would've been totally reasonable for her to ask for 15 and they probably would've come back with 11. I hate that this was given as a good strategy because it's actually an example of how women negotiate themselves down when they ask for something, only to get negotiated down further. She deserved 15% just to be on par with what others were making, but instead she's still behind.

Get real. Microsoft would only hire women if they could pay them less for being women. There are a variety of factors that make up her salary, the average salary of her peers doesn’t necessarily mean her labor is worth the same amount

I work in DOD as a software engineer. I make good money but not as good as I will at apple or Microsoft. However, my job is stable comparing to companies such as Apple and/or Microsoft, specially now with so many the layoffs at these companies.

Really interesting and eye opening video, esp comparing to a different field (medicine) where in the UK we're earning way less than everyone interviewed here and that's after 20y experience!

In some years there won't be enough doctors and there'll be too many developers. Just read the comments, most people do it exclusively for money. Being a doctor is just way more stressful.

"Get good at interviewing" this is so true yet so sad. If you have all what it takes to do a great job but you don't master the interviewing process you won't be recruited. This proves that the interviewing process is out of date.

I would love to see you recreate the same video, but this time ask about their background, if they were self taught, boot camp, or degree in cs, etc… also ask how much math they use day to day and if so what kind of math, please🙏🏼. Im a cs student and im confused on whether or not im taking the right path and this would be very informative and appreciated.

Damn. Starting salaries have gone up a lot. Inflation, I guess. When I was there circa 2010, I got hired at a senior level (SDE 63 I think-not a noob) at something between 130k and 140k with I think 10k signing bonus and a 20k stock grant (not sure, memory is fuzzy). These entry-level people are coming in at my old salary. It's either inflation, or MS is doing better or being more generous than it was at the time. Fun seeing you walking around Studios though. I miss MS, though the culture was really cutthroat at the time and I don't miss that at all. People would do their best to throw you under the bus to make sure they fared well in the stack-ranked reviews. It was kind of a nightmare.

@@XzzVttll My stocks have gone up to about 7x their original value, though of course I'd have to sell them to realize the increase, at which point I'd be taxed very heavily on the increase, making it more like 5x. And yes, the starting bonus is literally for signing on with them. Usually it's to make them more appealing vs. other companies, or to compensate for lost vesting of stocks at your current company.

Never aim at a single company , also make sure to attend DSA lectures and listen them carefully , practise 1 question everyday and you will definitely be selcted for any company of your wish

If this is true, this may possibly be racially motivated (or I suppose technically it could have been justified as less experience than the typical new hire). I am changing over into the tech field and I have started a coding boot camp if ya will in C. I did watch your video about the different languages. Being where youre at now with Microsoft? Yes there are other roles that are not technical and you can also make great money. Like product management, customer success manager, sales etc. some are starting at 6 figure salaries depending on the company

i know people who work in sales for certain tech companies that make about double what the fulltime engineers make on the same time, however its more comission based. But if you're good at sales then you should stick with it instead of switching to coding where you don't know if you'll be good or not imo

Are you a CNA, nurse, or doctor? I think doctors make more than $100K after residency and all that… nurses have OK salaries specially if they do overtime, I know a traveling nurse who makes $3K/week and the hospital pays for his living expenses too. So I think nurses and doctors in the US definitely make a decent living.

She is an Affirmative Action hire, who doesn't understand the difference between a melee weapon and the verb "to inquire". She is ridiculously overcompensated.

I've been offered a very nice role at a pretty big entertainment/tech company on a graduate scheme which goes into a full time job after 7 months(training and everything). The role starts next year which I am super excited about but the one thing I regret is not negotiating the salary when I got the call with the job offer. I didn't apply to too many companies by that time and I just felt super lucky and blessed to land a pretty nice relatively well-paying job (especially at my age) and got super excited and just said yes to the offer with no negotiation especially because I was of the notion that they would revoke my offer if I ask for a pay increase. What I was told however is after the graduate scheme is over and you convert into a full time rule, there is a salary increase so I hope to show the company my worth and ask for a nice pay rise after those 7 months though! Wish me luck everyone :D

Hello from Russia. I used to live in US. While these salaries are high, the taxes and living expenses eat it up. Living in usa is very expensive. Average nice house around there is probably over a million. In any case, I much prefer to live in Europe. But european salaries are nowhere near those amounts

so it seems the TC in Seattle / Redmond is lower than the TC in Silicon Valley, where people may say the TC is like $300k or $350k... but then, a two bedroom apartment here is like $3800 per month... so if it is $2500 a month in Seattle / Redmond, together with the price of other things lower, I guess that makes up for it.

As a software engineer. I wish I made that salary lol

Recently, I questioned myself and the pathway I'm currently taking in college. But seeing these freshly graduates being happy in their work, I got somewhat motivated to continue and become better of what I'm doing right now. Working overseas at big companies like Microsoft, Google or Amazon is one of my dreams and I will continue to strive harder in order to achieve that.

The amount of incompetent people that i have seen get hired because they are good interviewees but terrible workers is more than my fingers and toes combined. 😂

Nice, I worked at Microsoft from 2013 - 2016. Stock vesting price was $35 or something like that :)

Hahaha I bought a real microphone and it didnt come in in time so I had to resort to this. It actually worked out really well and now I dont even want the microphone haha

I prefer a higher base salary. Monthly bills don’t wait for bonuses at the end of the year that may or may not be what you expect. And also a one time signing bonus is nice. But again one time.

a higher base salary always correlates to seniority at your company. Most people could negotiate higher signing bonuses or slightly higher stock options but a higher base salary can only be offered with right amount of qualifications with competing offers from other companies

I am looking forward to this. I have been an apprenticeship for 3 years, in a variety of IT fields (web development, security, IT Service, technical writing, project management). But during all those successful projects, I still only make $15 an hour, about $28,000 to $29,000 a year. I hope once a have a couple programming languages down, maybe I can get out of the apprenticeship and make a good income. It’s been a dream to make the salary’s these people your interviewing make. Being a JR for 3 years, even though I have done a few months of IT management in the mix of all the projects, and I am still a Junior in all the career fields I helped complete projects in. I want that software engineer dream job. I will keep using every opportunity I get, to get there someday.

Honestly you have alot of knowledge dont be afraid to check your worth and apply to jobs, trust the worst thing they could say is no and you will learn things in interviews that maybe you didn't know that will help you out in the future. Think of it as improving your social skills

forget about learning 10 programming languages or knowing what clean architecture or MVVM MVC bullshit is. Just work for people who have money and leave the others alone. Dont work for poor people (if you want money), that's my understanding.

I work a fulltime job n web dev. and one freelance job on the side for about $25 an hour plus another small side hustle building simple websites on weekends. I have very good people skills but you must be doing something else wrong here man. it's not about learning more. i'm willing to bet you know twice as much as me about programming. I sadly don't think the solution here is to just STUDY more and learn more languages.

you need to apply to at least 5 jobs every single day. I can guarantee you in 3 months you will get a better paying job than that

Well I have some good news. I should be increasing my income from $29,000 to $75,000/$90,000 in August this year. My current cyber security project loves me. They are planning to fly me out for specialized training this spring, hire me by the end of my contract this fall, and use my Management, Development, and PAM skills soon after, as they feel they are currently underutilizing my skills. It’s a great company, wonderful team, and I have been happy with them during these past 5 months. This has been my most promising project yet. The future looks good, August should be when all my years of work pays off. I am excited.

What camera do you use now and what did you use when you started?

Saving you 7 minutes Software engineer: New Grads fresh off college: 112k + bonus Project Manager: 120k + bonus Software Engineer 2: 170k (with promotions) All bonuses are from 25k to 50k negotiable, also you get stocks in microsoft

All this really tells me is that we are in the biggest tech bubble of our history and the crash will be hard. 😬
