I think if you did this during spring and fall season, it would be a hit. Mostly due to people finishing up degrees during that time. I was a Fall graduate due to prerequisites only being available at certain intervals. I also worked at one of the largest tech companies in the world and did a lot of interviews for them and it seems like they ramp up hiring because financial statements are related to these two time slots. They can budget for what is needed once budgets can be determined either at midyear or end of year, but never in-between. So yeah, making this a twice a year series, I can see people out in the field relating to what is happening in the real world. This would be a hit series 🙂

computer science graduate here. I applied to 350 jobs around the same time as this video, wrote personalized cover letters for many. Most of the big companies just cold walled me. The 2 companies which i had final interviews, each made me wait a month and rejected. One of them rejected with an automatic mail and never returned my mails. I dont mind the rejections bu these applications take a lot of time and not even getting a minute audience fron these recruiters really messed with my mental health

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully things will start to get better soon. In the meantime you can try working on some personal project, bolstering some of your current skills, or even learn some new skills so that once the pandemic is over you are ready for any job posting which might occur. Lastly, although networking is a lot tougher now, you might still want to try and build some connections with companies/people you're interested. Best of luck!

Recruiters are good but it's better if the company you work for will eventually hire you on as a full-time employee. Agencies take a cut of your check. For example if you get paid $15 technically you are getting $20+ but your agency gets that extra cash. It's good when the company hires you on then you'll get your actual pay. Sometimes you can negotiate your pay when they pull you on full-time.

Recruiting hell is real. I applied on again off again for years for everything from grocery stores to maybe ones that I wasn’t qualified for, but it was worth a shot, trying to sell my soft skills. I was ghosted, rejected, told I should “stay where I was at and be happy with it,” and outright admonished for applying. It does take a massive hit to your self esteem. It’s like dating. They’ll find some seemingly inconsequential thing to reject you for.

One of which I wasn't able to coordinate a time in my schedule because their interview schedule was during my work hours and they ditched me, the other was a well known reputable company and the recruiter did not show up for the scheduled interview. Still have yet to talk to someone. Solid work on the video. I wish you had more replies to make it that more interesting. I was a technical recruiter for a little over two years and I can confirm the ghosting isn’t “usually” done on purpose. And for every recruiter ghost there are 10 times that for applicant ghosting. So I think that plays into the role too. To understand how ghosting even happens you have to put yourself in the recruiter shoes. In an 8 hour period recruiters are reaching out to 100-10000 applicants. Screening, setting up interviews, giving them feedback, etc. working with this many people is it very hard to overlook/forget about some along the way. NO MATTER WHAT TOOLS YOU ARE USING. This does not apply to all recruiters some are just assholes and do a sloppy and careless job but most really do care and try to get you in front of the clients. It gets them paid too after all. Hope this helps

Hey man! Awesome video, your experiment proves that simply applying online is not enough, especially in our current economy. Jobs are limited and millions of people are all trying to do the same thing: sending their resume to online job boards. Like you said, using LinkedIn, reaching out to employees, HR Managers and recruiters is much more efficient - not a lot of people are doing it, and it's easier to show off your value by doing so than on a 1-page resume.

When you watch what he covered in his Masters I'm not surprised he didn't get picked. Without context this video means very little. I've gone back to study Masters now, but as a full timer for several years now at two separate companies I can safely say what makes you employable is: "work ethic, attitude and a multitude of soft skills as well as clearly demonstrating **what you know**, what you **don't know** and how you plan on learning the latter, how to cope in difficult collaboration situations and that you know you're there to make them profit improve yourself and your work culture. People like author who say the "I've sat on a seat at 2 companies for 2 or so years and I have a masters so yeah, I'm top shelf" is a ridiculous statement. Be dynamic, mature, profitable and you'll get beaten up with offers. Also don't expect a top company to slot you unless you've crushed it hard at school, internship, own portfolio and possibly open source contributions.

This is sad but also somewhat encouraging. I've been a software developer for a long time and I've worked on some extremely interesting projects for some very big companies. But I found myself looking for a job a few years ago and was surprised that the world had changed so much. Back in the day anyone who could program would get hired immediately. But now even talented experienced and smart developers get multiple rejections on a routine basis. I thought maybe it was because I was so old. But it's now sounding more like a supply and demand problem.

About recruiters: you couldn’t have said it better. What I’ve experienced: 1. They seem super overwhelmed (or distracted) and literally forget you exist 2. They promise you that you’ll hear something by around a certain date (they never are specific). Then, you hear nothing for days if not a week after that date forcing you to reach out instead of them. 3. They LOVE you through a multi-month interview process until after you get rejected in the final interview. Then they promise to go the extra mile and help you get in with any other job because of how good of a candidate you were. Then, once you find a similar job, they ghost you. You are right, the recruiting industry needs to change. Leaving someone in the dark for days and mostly weeks at a time is unacceptable. Not providing solid interview feedback or being honest moving forward after a rejection is unacceptable. Leading people on is unacceptable when families and futures are at stake.

I also have friends in Georgia and Florida who have very nice job security considering they were able to get a well paying job while still in college. I'm assuming it's just the Californian market since every top notch developer is moving over there for the 6 figure starting pay and this dude would only be average to maybe slightly above average compared to them. Take into consideration he never says where he got his degree from, what his dissertation was nor his specialization or his grades which all matter when you're competing with possibly *the* best the country, so this isn't a very accurate view of the job market for the majority of people

This ghosting by recruiters is a very serious issue for fresh graduates who are looking for jobs and experience. Let me tell you a fun fact. Instead of keeping track of my applications to companies.. I just apply to them and forget about it.. It would be nice if a recruiter reaches back but most of the time there's no reply at all. I just follow the "fire and forget" mode. It will help to keep emotional turmoil at watch.

The unfortunate reality is, when the recruiter found you, things go much faster and more smoothly as opposed to the other way around.
