I am not those men. I am Saladin.. Salahuddin (Kingdom of Heaven)

balin is backed into a corner and he knows it, but by asking no terms he is making a thinly veiled threat - essentially we have nothing to lose and we will fight to the bitter end, even if we both know that means total destruction. balin is also subtly hinting to saladin that he is not interested in himself, his title, his lands or wealth, but rather fights for the people, portraying himself as a future martyr for the cause because balin doesnt even mentions any of these things in an attempt to negotiate. it also sets the stage for the two leaders to talk as men, and as leaders setting up a dual nature for both. this gives saladin room only to offer terms, which he does. after his offer is questioned by balin, he tells him he is not those men, but rather he is saladin. the inflection of the line "im not those men" is important as it's delivered with a sense of disgust, and saladin also cant even bring to mention who "those men" are. he then contrasts "those men" with his own name, saladin, by which he means himself saladin the man and his word. he repeats his name, but this time he means the arabic translation of "saladin" which means righteous in faith, which can only be understood in arabic. he is now talking to balin not as a man but a symbol and a leader. as he's walking away he answers the question "what is jerusalem" in the same manner he answered the former question. he answers "nothing", which he means for him personally, just like when he referred to himnself as saladin the man. the second time he answers he says "everything" by which he means to the Arabic people. he's saying it means nothing to saladin the man, but simultaneously everything to his people, in the same way he was simultaneously saladin the man, and saladin the muslim leader and symbol.

Balin wasn't making a threat. It would have been dishonorable for him to ask for terms. Balin gave a subtle command. "You offer terms; I ask none" then looked away signaling submission. Saladin knew this and gave him generous terms (under the circumstances) and allowed him to keep his honor in the process.

"Nothing....and everything" He was a legendary battle lord. Even where I live in the UK. I read a book as a child that described the time when he and Richard the First met and compared their weapons. Richard cut through an iron bar with his long sword and Saladin responded by cutting a sheet of silk with his scimitar. Its not a true story I expect. More of an allegory. We are all essentially the same, just with some cool differences. Nothing and everything. Different, but the same.

While it is true that Saladin offered terms for the surrender of Jerusalem, they weren't quite this generous. Instead, he offered the opportunity for all the occupants to pay for safe passage, with those that couldn't pay being forced into slavery. Balian pointed out to him that most of the population were poor and could not afford the sum that Saladin named, so Saladin did agree to lower the cost he was asking. Balian paid 30'000 deniers from the city coffers on behalf of those who couldn't pay, but many of the city's occupants were still sold into slavery. Some thousands of these were subsequently released by Saladin and his family members (Who each took a portion of the slaves as booty). Balian was also given 500 slaves as a gift, but released them all. In total some 15'000 of the city's occupants were still permanently enslaved, however. By medieval standards, it was a generous offer. Probably because Saladin respected Balian a great deal (at an earlier point in time, Saladin had captured Balian but agreed to release him on the condition that he played no part in the defense of Jerusalem. However, when Balian returned to the city and the people begged him to protect them, he wrote a letter to Saladin explaining the situation and asking for permission to go back on their agreement. Saladin was so impressed that he not only gave permission, but agreed to give Balian's family safe passage out of the city and across the battle lines) and because he wanted to take the city without losing further Muslim lives. But it's still much less palatable than the movie version of events. All that being so, Saladin still tended to treat Christian captives much better than the Christians treated Muslim ones. He would allow surrendering noblewomen and their entourage to leave captured cities without paying, and he would treat captured noblemen well (to be ransomed later). Captured rank and file soldiers, however, were typically either sold into slavery or outright executed. This was especially true of local levies, who Saladin believes were apostates to Islam.

Salahudin's name translates to "righteousness of the faith". Salahudin's actions and compassion and his distaste for death and destruction and his following of his faith guided him as it did with Balien.. Jerusalem means nothing in the earthly realm, but it is everything to those who are guided by their faith and principles. The crux for three of the great religions of the world and their faithful. Jerusalem has nothing to offer strategically and geographically poor of any valuable assets....but it means everything to the muslims, it is the one mission that Saladin managed to rally all different emirs, tribes, leaders, sultans to be under his banner. it is one of the holiest place to islam, so that is what it means by 'everything' to them.

There was a term that came out of my generation when it came to movies, made popular by another movie called "Thank You for Smoking." The normal Rav's. Russian, Arab, villain. I am so grateful this habit was put aside. "Kingdom of Heaven" was among the first to do this, and I remember feeling the wind of change. It gave me hope for the future.

In terms of history this movie does it justice. 2 of the best leaders known to Man, King Baldwin and Saladin, respected one another, would rather speak and handle their affairs before shedding any blood but were so great that their men would charge to the call if need be. Both men cared for their people and their cause and most importantly their belief in religion, which was the whole point of this war. Even after Saladin took Jerusalem he allowed other religions to visits the holy sites without harm, unparalleled leadership from both

Not only din Saladin give every Christian safe passage, he even went to the extent of donating essentials to the fleeing Christians, such as water and food. Particularly to the poor and the sick. For the high ranking leaders, they were all given expensive tokens. There was even a story that as his soldiers stumbled upon a house with a married couple, Saladin instructed his men to leave them alone and not bother them since they were newly weds.

You know you a badass when the people who are there to kill you and your kind specifically because of your faith, won't shut up praising you because of how good you are and pious in your faith. Also when someone writes their self-insert fan fiction story, they put the founder of your religion in a deeper part of hell for "heresy", but they put you in limbo because your only sin was that you weren't Christian, then you know your enemies respect you hundreds of years after your birth. That's just plain bad ass.

The sad part is that this is very historically accurate. Muslims Knights and rulers in those days tended to be much more honorable than their Christian counterparts. Even as late as the Ottoman Empire, Many Muslim rulers Gave every right of citizenship to non muslims within their lands. The same can't be true of most Christian kingdoms and nations. Legend has it that mohammed actually executed one of his greatest generals for the sin of murdering a wounded Knight who was attempting to surrender, Which was a grave sin under Islam. Even in those days they gave protections to prisoners of war that most Christian nations didn't offer even as late as the 20th century.

In actual history Saladin was not this generous, he gave a number cap, anyone else who can afford a certain payment can be set free as well. Many nobles in Jerusalem actually paid for others, which touched Saladin so he increased the free number cap. In the end still a sizable portion of Christians inside Jerusalem was sold as slaves, mostly poor ones. That being said, Saladin was still much better in treating the captured compared to his Christian counterparts.

At the end of September, Balian rode out with an envoy to meet with the sultan, offering surrender. Saladin told Balian that he had sworn to take the city by force, and would only accept an unconditional surrender.[9] Saladin told Balian that Saladin's banner had been raised on the city wall, but his army was driven back. Balian threatened that the defenders would destroy the Muslim holy places, slaughter their own families and the 5000 Muslim slaves, and burn all the wealth and treasures of the Crusaders.[10] Saladin, who wanted to take the city with as little bloodshed of his fellow Muslims as possible, insisted that the Crusaders were to unconditionally surrender but could leave by paying a ransom of ten dinars for men, five for women and two for children; those who couldn't pay would be enslaved. Balian told him that there were 20,000 in the city who could never pay that amount. Saladin proposed a total of 100,000 dinars to free all the 20,000 Crusaders who were unable to pay. Balian complained that the Christian authorities could never raise such a sum. He proposed that 7,000 of them would be freed for a sum of 30,000 dinars, and Saladin agreed

What is Jerusalem worth? Strategically, nothing; a town in the mountains that does not command trade routes or access to resources. @ Al Einstein Saladin won, and the natives of those lands, prevailed. The Christians should have never been there to impose themselves, but they thought God was on their side. How many senseless wars have been fought under that mantra. As for the Templars, they were mercenaries, warriors, Christian muscle, and knights with some twisted sense of honor. Other people might call them just another type of pirates, thieves, and bandits. A cut above Cortez or Columbus perhaps. You tell me. I love the tales of adventure, and history in general.
