I am Happy to be a Farmer’s Son | Planting Paddys in Ukhrul, Manipur, Northeast India
June is a busy month for the farmers in Manipur. Being a farmer’s son can indeed be a unique and fulfilling experience. Whether it’s the rugged connection to the land, the sense of stewardship, or the hard work that shapes character, there’s something special about growing up on a farm.
Here's a video of my parents and the villagers planting paddy in my parents' paddy field.

Omg! This is a beautiful video. Besides the video, Amei Zingkhai has neatly explained the types of clothes and the purposes of carrying pots to collect snails, frogs, fish, and other items. No doubt village life is the best. Most viewers might notice that only women are planting paddy and might assume that only women work in this context. As far as I know, there is a division of labour. In the Northern Tangkhul region (Raphei side, where Amei Zingkhai is from), paddy fields are primarily planted by women, while ploughing is done by men. On the western side of Tangkhul, both women and men plant paddy. The eastern side of Tangkhul is mainly engaged in jhum cultivation (shifting cultivation), so you will see less terraced cultivation. On the southern side of Tangkhul, paddy fields are planted mainly by women (even men do), while mostly men plough the paddy field with the Kapuda (ploughing machine). During harvesting time, the Southern side of Tangkhul harvests more than the other side of Tangkhul (Maybe this is due to geographical location and the size of the paddy field). This video reminds me that the Tangkhuls had a self-sufficient economy and could survive without importing food. Unlike in mainland India, I am hardly aware of any Tangkhuls who have died from hunger. Sadly, we now depend on the free rations provided by the government, which are of poor quality and have led to an increase in obesity due to the use of fertilizers in food. Additionally, many paddy fields have been abandoned as we depend more on welfare schemes and marketization. I hope this video will remind us that we are food sovereignty and self-sufficiency. Thanks to Amei Zingkhai for this video.

Hi Achan, thank you for those kind words. Really appreciate your thoughts and inputs in the comments about our economy and the difference in ways of cultivating paddy and harvest.
My mom never went to school, farming was all she knew. She would say she gets headache if she stay home and even if there is little or no work, whether it’s raining or sunny she would just go to field. She would say that anything eaten in the field is tastier. She never retired from farming until she breathed her last. Enjoy every moments with your old folks❤
