I Always Wanted This Sound: The JHS Crayon Preamp, Boost, Overdrive, Fuzz (Neve 1073 in a box!)
Музыка
Today in the basement, Josh is going to go over the JHS Crayon and it's multifaceted uses and abilities. The Crayon is essentially the "overdrive" part of the Colour Box, or the red section. Here's some copy from our website about the controls:
"The Crayon has controls for Master, Pre-Vol, Tilt, and a Hi-Pass toggle. The Master volume controls the overall volume of the unit, while the Pre-Vol acts as a gain control to go from a gritty preamp drive to over-the-top gated fuzz. These controls work together to create a ton of colorful tones that are extremely useful. The Tilt control is an active EQ where when set at 12 o’clock you have a flat EQ, while turning clockwise boosts highs and cuts bass, and turning counterclockwise boosts bass and cuts highs. This gives the Crayon the ability to be tailored to any rig for bass or guitar. The Hi-Pass toggle cuts your low end with a flick of the switch for the ability to cut through the mix or get lo-fi sounds. There is a dip switch on the right side of the pedal to choose either 200Hz or 750Hz cut for the Hi-Pass."

I'd rather have the demon audio humongous knob version.
That stop motion film deserves an award. It's beautiful.
Nick is truly an artist. From one creative to another: Nick, you’re on another level, man. And Josh, that’s a crazy box of rock you’ve created. Totally unassuming, but seems to be a Swiss Army Drive.
I am one of the many who never saw this brilliant movie before. Nick is a genius. Josh, as you know, you are also a genius, for realizing that people would want what the crayon provides.
Nick is obviously a big part of JHS. The creative talent in everything he does, the passion. Mostly the loyalty is astounding in my opinion. Josh you must truly be an amazing human to be able to have developed such a team. Kudos Nick and everyone at JHS. I started out with Donner but now JHS is dominating. Pulp and Peel , PG14 and Series 3 Harmonic Trem so far.
Really glad to see you Deep diving into YOUR own creations for a change! Would love to see you do a more in depth look at highlighting the versatility of the Color Box next.

This stop motion movie is truly a masterpiece. I saw it years ago, and I'm glad I got it presented to re-watch. Thank you Nick!
Nels' solo on Hell is Chrome changed the way I understood a solo (or guitar parts in general) could work. Just blew me away. I had to listen to it on repeat for days. Genius. So soulful, and unconventional.

Unless youre referring to his work on the live album Kicking Television, I’m pretty sure Jeff Tweedy does all the guitar work on a ghost is born including hell is chrome since it was pre Nels and Post Jay Bennett! (Although I read that all Jeff’s lead stuff at the time was inspired by Nels and that was part of why he ended up in the band)
Josh, I have always appreciated how you put your love of music first and foremost. It makes you such a joy to watch and listen too. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Please, please, please keep doing this as long as you can.
Nick's Video Teaser!!!! Go Nick! Nick you are a MONSTER creator!!!! always with the tasty drum stylings! Cheers! btw - I have had the Color Box (with the 3rd row SHIFT) for some years and LOVE IT!!! of course. Thanks Josh for everything you do. What a treasure you all are. Morning Glory FOREVER!
This is absolutely insane. He found a way to make a pedal that sounds exactly like Jack Whites guitar sound in The White Stripes. I own their Fuzz pedal but had I known this pedal existed, I would have bought this thing and thrown away every distortion pedal I currently own. Good god he’s a genius. I tried to get my friend to make a pedal for me like this once and he had no idea how to make it work. A dream come true.
The stop-motion animation is incredible! Good stuff all around. 👍
Thanks for the tour of the Crayon! It really is a treat seeing you highlight your work. The enthusiasm you have for designing and building carries over to these illuminations. More spotlights and origin stories, please!
Amazing stop action video. I also really enjoy the videos about JHS pedals. No one has better insight into them than you so it's interesting.
I love how excited you get when talking about the inspiration for this. You are the genuine article my friend! It’s all about the music with you and that is powerful stuff. I would love to buy direct so I know your getting every cent of the money I want you to have anything you need to keep making music better or easier to find the sound you want! Your the man!
Dude, I'm new here and I just gotta say I absolutely love the way you nerd out! It's passionate, articulate, engaging, witty and vulnerable. You get all the gold stars I had allocated for today, you're awesome.
Josh, I love the deeper dives of your pedals. The Color Box should be next on the list, love you original V2 video showing it off. It’s so good that maybe you don’t need to dive it deeper but it’s a great pedal and a million uses.

Yes please !!! Colour box V2 deeeeeeeeep diiiiiiiiiive 🙌👍👍🙏please
Love how you always play to the pedals you are using, your playing style, use of percussiveness. Yet another terriffic demo! And loved the rest of the episode of course, nick is amazeballs!! Pixar, watch out.
Hell is chrome... I've loved that guitar tone since it's release and always go back to it. 👍😎
I bought this pedal immediately after watching this video. Love you, Josh, for your love of music and for pointing at the sounds that I love!
Really impressed with Nick's Movie! ...and apparently I'm getting a new preamp pedal! You guys are all completely Amazing, thank you!
This was the first JHS pedal I heard of through “the new kid” in my math class.. fast forward 5 years later and he is now one of my best friends :) Thanks Josh
The Crayon adds something special to your tone. It really makes whatever you’re playing sound like the studio album record. I have it on my Pink Floyd/ David Gilmour inspired board. It’s great for everything, but where it really shines is for songs from “The Wall”, especially ones that employ the direct into the console technique, like “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2”. Master all the way up, Pre just before breakup, Tilt on the treble side, and the Hi Pass on at 200. Perfect for those funky, compressed, DI tones.
I saw Spoon a few weeks ago and their live guitar sounds were absolutely epic.
Nicks video was awesome... entire video was great.. great work all around!!
Love the Crayon! I was just playing around with one yesterday and had a blast with it.
This is my only JHS, the only pedals I keep after buying a katana are the drive train, and yours is truly unique. I bought it to chase the tone of bodysnatchers. Wonderful work man!
Very cool video. Nick! You are a very talented individual!
Amazing episode! This was the first JHS pedal I owned (also the first pedal I bought from Reverb). I desperately wanted a Color Box but couldn't afford it so I was pumped for this. I generally use it as a Tom Petty-ish boost or as a way to run my guitar through an NES cartridge. Kudos to you guys for a super versatile pedal and for paring down so many useful features in a way that was still quality but more affordable
Yo! Really enjoying all your videos. You guys have taken JHS to the next level. Well done!🎸🔊
Loved the deep dive into this and it’s definitely a pedal to be proud of! Would love at some point maybe a deeper dive into the Twin Twelve which I know is discontinued but I definitely have gotten a lot of great use out of.
Amazing video, Nick!!! Great music too.
That promo vid is fucking awesome! Well done Nick! Nothing beats DI in with a classic 1073, love this pedal and tone! Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant trail, must've taken forever. The Crayon is one of those pedals I will never let go of. Its mystique and depth of sound just keeps giving.

it did take so long! lolol
Absolutely love it!, the Colour box was the reason I discovered JHS! I was searching for that exact thing haha, and just wanted to find some affordable preamps. You should definitely keep these vids talking about your own pedals going! I love the stories and knowing that this is your favourite! its now my even more favourite! (see what I did there) ha
Dude. That video is legit awesome. I can't even imagine how long that must have taken.
One of my favorite pedals, ty for putting this into the world!
I dunno guys. Why it took this video to convince me that the Crayon should be my next pedal , but this did it. Killer!!
This is a great video. I missed the 'Monday Monologues' videos but they seem to have been reborn as what I think of as the 'Josh Only' video format. I enjoy hearing Josh in his stream-of-consciousness mode, where he's just thinking aloud to a camera. I enjoy hearing what he says but I also feel like it's somehow doing him good. I enjoy all the JHS videos but particularly enjoy hearing Josh sort of let his mind wander, as he does in this one.
It’s the most passionate I’ve seen you. without a hint of cynicism. Great story and what an honor. I’m inspired in that same exact way by those same records. There oh so good…..Loved the cray-mation! I would like to hear how you went about in design sometime.
I love the stop motion! Man of many talents.
I have always thought that Nick was super creative! Love that guy, and he has no ego too. NICK!
Tremendous video skills Nick.👌
The Mutemath lick was a nice touch. Also, thank you for sharing the pedal story. It's very helpful and makes me want it.
I keep hearing this type of fuzzy gated tone for years, so glad you made this video. A few more examples: 1) Father John Misty - Strange Encounter 2) Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart 3) Clube da Esquina - Trem de Doido (this one always blows my mind)
Josh is living the dream. This Crayon pedal sounds rad, I’ve gotta try the Color Box!
Just so you know, I would watch any video on the crayon & colour box. Absolutely love both these creations. Josh, you're brilliant, and Nick, I want you to be my drummer cos you're totally brilliant! Bless you guys.. 🍻
Great summary. I wish you’d have these for all your pedals. I bought the crayon in a whim and after an hour I was convinced it was not for me and was going to return. Decided to keep trying it out and now it’s my favorite distortion / fuzz pedal, glad I kept it, it definitely had to grow on me though.
This is awesome!!!! You should have one of these for every pedal that comes out!!!
Really super inspiring! Just a great pedal.
Holy crap, that is a Rhoney!!! Very cool guitar. I loved his and Sully’s podcast. The luthierist podcast, for those curious.
32 and just discovering spoon because of your recommendation. Thank you for being so informative and humble at the same time.
Well done Nick…I love it!
That stop motion animation promo is incredible. Must have taken him a hundred hours or more to put that together! Mad respect for Nick.
This pedal is now on my ultimate velcro fuzz want to buy list.

That stop motion vid, along with the music, was amazing 🤜
i love stop motion animation AND the direct-Into a neve sound - so this vid is pretty much heaven for me

Yes, more of this content on your own pedals. Love the origin stories.
That awesome feeling when you watch a review video about a device you actually own
That was awesome Nick!
Man Ive wanted a Colour Box for so long now, The Crayon s an awesome pedal
Nick was dropped into creativity fluid as a baby. Awesome.
Awesome work, Nick!!!
The crayon sounds amazing. My buddy has two v2 color boxes for drums. *mind blowing*. But. Not nearly as much as Nick's stop motion work. So good!

That guitar is gorgeous!
Nick… I pour my love upon thee! … God bless you sir. Carry on.
I love this channel! just recently started watching and it's great! please do more of these vids where you do some bass on JHS (et.al) pedals. thanks!
Wilco are one of my favorite bands ever, and "A Ghost is Born" while not my very favorite album of theirs, is still very very good, and more than any other Wilco album, conjures very specific memories of a certain time in my life. I have such an indelible memory of listening to "Hell is Chrome" while lying on a bed in a dim candle lit room and the music just enveloping me with it's warm, right up close, impossibly languid dynamic, just so much space between the sounds, sparse yet so full of life.
The first thing I thought about at first hear was Wilco’s “Spiders”. Crazy that you have revealed the inspiration for this!
The teaser video was amazing!
Nick's promo was/is beautiful, fun, excellent. That was the best!

This is what I needed after the week I've had. And that Wilco solo.
I remember watching demos when this came out and absolutely no one got it. I think it just went over a lot of people's heads. Great pedal.
Love Nick! Inspires me to be creative
Nick very impressive work
Ohhh...thats a killer stop action vid! it's brilliant ...I'm gonna buys the pedal.
So hard to believe its been 8 years since the Crayon. I still rock the original stickers on a bunch of stuff...you guys put like 5 of the old box stickers in my Andy Timmons Angry Charlie box back in I think 2018.
Nick, you’re a legend.
Well done Nick!
Just for the stop motion ... fantastic
I’ve been following you guys since PRETTY early on (like I-still-want-a-Brian-May-In-A-Junction-Box early on! 😄😇), and I don’t remember that video at all! 😳 Sincerely, Nick! well done! 👏🏻
That trailer is awesome
that animation is awesome! I'm quite tempted by the pedal, too. I'm a huge fan of Spoon, and Gimme Fiction especially. So I might have to buy the pedal for those days when I want to pretend I'm in Spoon.

oh, and Lanois uses 73s as his pre's a lot of the time (he has a bunch of them). another reason for me to buy this pedal.
Josh Im a big fan of the Hudson Electronics Broadcast. I'm predominantly a Strat/Tele player and I leave the broadcast on all the time. You're so right to say this pedal The Crayon is just overlooked and its on my purchase list. Great vid
That stop motion video is a work of art
Great, another JHS that's gonna be on my list to buy
That's a sharp looking guitar!
Oh Yes! How did Spoon get erased from my memory? They were (are) so good. WIlco brilliant band, the guitar sounds are so epic. Jeff and Nels create such interesting guitar noises.
Oh Josh, when I was a young boy, I lived in Czechoslovakia, bolscheviks rules our world and we try to bastle something like this, without a chance to get anything from "bad and dirty west". It sounded exactly like yours Crayon, and we thought - oh boy, its bad, no fine sound, so crapy... And today it´s a hit... Isn´t the live strange..? Good luck :)
that sounds incredible.
Y'all make it so hard not to buy all the pedals in the world...lol. I will get this pedal someday! Great video!
That Wilco solo was everything Ive ever wanted.
I really enjoyed the aphasic speech to video. You are likely genius to have all the be on purpose. If not... I learned soooo much! No... I am not well heeled enough to buy all the pedals I could love. Here's music leads like you: America: Sandman: Final Guitar Solo. On Spotify w/ headphones. I was inspired. Awessome thanks for this episode.... Nick! You are genius! What a group you all are!!!
Thanks.... you guys are the best.
i watched this while resoldering a favorite guitar(my work habits probably explain why i needed to redo it...). love it. may have get the pedal just for THE guitar i was working on... thanks kids ! steve
god, that Spoon song made me chase this tone ever since i heard it when i was 13 years old. Always thought it was an octave fuzz or something but i never knew, but i should have, it was a 1073 direct
The colour box v2 is my favorite thing on my pedal board. I run my live vox thru it and it’s freaking magic. Everything I record goes thru it and the squishy fuzz sound on bass is otherworldly! Also, sounds better than my actual 1073….recently sold the Neve cuz the CBv2 is more versatile
