I hope you enjoyed this adventure! It means so much to me that you spent the time watching it. If you enjoyed this, please consider subscribing. I strive to bring relatively unknown, odd, unique, and special places to you each week from the American Southwest!
---------------
👍How to be a respectful visitor to these places👍
1️⃣Don't climb on walls or structures. Don't lean on or climb over them. Many places don't even need to be visited up close. View these places from a distance or with binoculars.
2️⃣Do not touch the rock art. Don't touch or create new rock art to preserve ancient stories.
3️⃣ Leave All Artifacts. Leave artifacts and structures undisturbed to maintain their historical significance. It is illegal and wrong to take artifacts. If you want something to take home, support local tribes by buying their handicrafts and jewelry.
4️⃣ Manage Waste Responsibly. Use waste bags; don't leave human or pet waste behind. Don't 'go' near cultural sites.
5️⃣ Camp With Care. Don't camp near historical sites. No fires near these areas, and ensure all waste is packed out. Don't make fires in caves or alcoves. Camp in designated spots only. When you leave, make sure to make the site cleaner and better than when you found it. Pick up extra trash you may see.
6️⃣ Control Your Pets. Don't let pets roam freely near archaeological areas to prevent destruction. Pets are not allowed in or near sites.
7️⃣ Preserve Fragile Areas. Don't disturb fossils and please protect delicate soil and plant life.
8️⃣ Follow Rules. Don't engage in illegal actions such as building cairns, or using climbing gear to access archaeological sites.
9️⃣ Obey Drone Rules and Laws. Numerous locations in the American Southwest and beyond, such as the Navajo Reservation, Wilderness Study Areas, and various restricted spaces, enforce strict drone usage prohibitions. It is crucial to not only honor the legacy of the people who once inhabited these areas but also show respect for the present-day residents and adhere to their local laws, customs and regulations.
---------------
NOTE: I don't claim that I am the first person to "discover" these places. I just find things on Google Earth and want to go see what they are!
I do not claim to be an expert on anthropology, geology, or archaeology. I say that my channel is about "amateur archaeology". I don't have a degree or formal training in archaeology. I am just a hiker who loves to explore and see new things especially the ancient history in the American Southwest. This is what my channel is about. I hope you stick around and explore with me!
I do not give out locations to the places in my videos. I take seriously the responsibility to protect and respect these ancient places. If you do find/visit one of these locations, please visit respectfully. I try my best to hide noticeable landmarks, mountains, and canyons in my videos.

Hey Man... I've been watching your videos for a long time... I love all of them, even the ones where you don't find anything special, because the journey is just as special. Today as I'm watching this it kind of hit me hard hard. My dad loved to get out and see the Arizona desert, this may not be from Arizona, but it looks the same... He passed away on Sunday evening. This kind of thing is exactly what he would have loved to do. You replied to a comment previously on another video about Walnut Canyon... My father took me there when we were very young... I never forgot that place because of him and have visited it with other people, sharing it with them... Thank you for bringing me closer to him even though I didn't realize that's why i loved your channel. Have fun out there and stay safe my friend. Thank you again.

It's also the symbol for the planet Venus and that meaning goes all the way back to the Greeks and Romans. The planetary symbols have been in use for thousands of years so Spanish explorers could have easily known them. Or it could be a more modern (post Colonial) doodle. I'm still betting on It being Venus either way. We'll probably never know for sure. Or why! But really cool find and thanks for all your awesome vids.

  • @patstats1

    @patstats1

Even older than the Greeks and Romans, it could also be an Egyptian ankh. It’s a feminine symbol just as Venus is. (I’ve heard theories that Egyptians and Phoenicians explored the American Southwest…but this symbol looks more modern.) An ankh has an elongated circle, like the oval shape to the right. I guess I should have waited until the end of the video before adding my two cents.

Raven is talking to you! the symbol is old and pretty universal. In my mind, the cross bars of the Christin cross are usually not crowned by anything, but not always. the Spanish probably would have carved into the rock as well, instead of painting it it. What a lovely place.

And, the Templar Cross looks nothing like that symbol. So, whatever Jeff found there, it's not Templar. Although the barely visible (and repetitively prevalent throughout the SW and elsewhere) spiral is likely ancient, l think the symbol for female or Venus is probably far more modern. But...when is Venus visible from that cave, l wonder...?

When you said amphitheater, you were closer than you realize. This one isn't one, but the Delores Project (SW Colorado) excavated a natural feature very similar to this, however it had many of the built features of a great kiva, floor drums, I think a large central hearth and a bench around the outside taking advantage of the natural rock formations. If I remember correctly, they called it Singing Shelter. I have no idea what the Pueblos called it, not certain they even remembered it was there. It's was larger than this one, and the floor was flatter, but otherwise very similar. Keep your eyes out. You might find another one like it on your treks.

Given the proximity of the faded spiral ( common symbol in prehistoric sites)and ankh like symbol, the latter symbol could be an atlatl, a prehistoric hunting device used to propel hunting darts and small spears using lever action to increase the speed and force of the dart. The atlatl predates the bow and arrow for hunting in this region. I've seen these symbols all over ruins and rock art sites in the for corners area. The faded paint looks to be red ochre which is also common for the period.

This cave reminded me of a cathedral when you stepped inside. So disappointing it was a no go on the drone. The rocks were full of curves and, it all looked like a collection of sculptures. Wonderful episode! Oh, and about that cross. I find it hard to believe who ever mixed the paint only had a enough for that one symbol. I thought there would be be more paintings, but who knows, maybe someone knocked over the paint bowl and that was all that was done!

Hello Jeff my old friend, that symbol is indeed very ancient, its origin is in the Egyptian Ankh, from over 3,300 years ago minimum. No I am not claiming Egyptians climbed up to that spectacular location, but that the symbol has been adopted by many others. In the area surrounding the Egyptian Tekhenu, we know as Washington's Monument in D.C. there is a large Ankh symbol (An Ancient Symbol of Life)on the ground. Tekhenus represented the 13 pieces of Osiris that Isis reassembled, along with one piece she fashioned to take the place of a missing piece. Tekhenus always came in pairs in ancient Egypt, and the pairs stood for order out of disorder, and succession and kingship. What a Grand Place Jeff, Wow, Wow, Wow. Man you captured that exquisite place beautifully Jeff. Thanks for lifting me up on your shoulders to see this wondrous place Jeff. Take Care Jeff, I wish you all well.

What a cool place! It would be a great place to dwell, you have water and shelter, but it would be a chore to go hunting and carry things all the way up there :) The rock formations are amazing!
