I Almost Lost $1000 (Marantz 2325 + Klipsch Forte)

Two weeks ago I almost lost $1100 by sending money to a scammer. They had a Marantz 2325 receiver listed for sale with a pair of Klipsch Forte speakers for $2000. The add had been up for over 2 months which surprised me. Thankfully, I used purchase protection with Venmo on the money and was able to get it back. I don't know what this guy was hoping to gain as most scammers know that if you use purchase protection they won't get money so they'll ask for you to pay with Zelle or something unprotected.
There is a long time scammer who goes by David Culver that posts cheap stereos around the country and has been doing so for over a decade.
Be careful and do not send money to people you don't know without purchase protection.

My name is Matt. I live in Washington State and create content around vintage stereos and other audio equipment. I approach the hobby from the standpoint of appreciating the aesthetic as well as having a system that is enjoyable to listen to my favorite music on. I'm not generally spending time worrying about having the right cables or how good the speakers sound beyond a certain point. So long as the music sounds good enough to dance to, I'm happy.

This scammer used different names such as Britt, Mike, and Matt but he told me his name was Chris on the phone. He uses the phone number 980-231-6406 and has adds around the country. Do not get scammed when buying vintage stereo equipment. Use these tips to avoid being Scammed when purchasing online.

You made him jump through all the right hoops to where he realized the scam could not go forward as he planned. Good job😊

It definitely was a scam. I have seen the same picture of those klipsch speakers with the word SCAM! here in Louisville KY. that someone had posted on Craigslist. It sounds like the same guy. Glad you got your money back.

Never buy any vintage equipment unless you see it in person, look it over for damage, check it/play it thoroughly to see if everything is working properly - if you are then satisfied with it, you can then proceed to puchase; after becoming the owner, you are still dealing with the risks of a half-century old piece of equipment where any part of the component can potentially fail, at any time.

A shame that even in this niche hobby there’s so many scams out there. I’ve gotten scammed in many different ways in my lifetime, but sometimes the real good deals make up for it.

I spent $100 for a Marantz SR7500 and it was too warm for mids and highs but fine to drive four 15" woofers.

Surely no knowledgeable person would sell that equipment for $2000.

Buy new! You'll get a warranty and in some cases, you can return. Too many scammers out there. Besides, it should be more about the quality of music than the equipment.
