I only heard of one person that never made mistakes and when folks found out about him they hung him on a cross. Showing real life vs no mistake videos shows you are honest and real. Tks for sharing. Excellent videos.

Well,.... I can think of one individual who believes everything he does is "perfect", he used to be a president of a large international concern. Rumor has it that he's found himself a bit of trouble with the law lately. But the name doesn't come to mind though. 😄😉😇

I was gonna say the same thing. Didn't burn the barn or a field. It happens
One reason I like your videos is because you show the good with the bad. Everyone makes mistakes. 😊
One thing I admire about you is your resiliency. You don’t let things like a fire or a fish kill stop you or slow you down!
I work in oil & gas (i.e. around high pressure flammables), and anyone worth their salt owns up to mistakes in hopes others learn from it and it prevents accidents. It takes a lot more character to publicly admit to a mistake than it does to sweep it under the rug. You never know, somebody watched this and changed their ways which prevented a fire with worse consequnces.
I know you wanted a bigger place to compost, but dang, you didn't have to burn it down. I'm glad it wasn't worse than it was, and Rebecca saw it when she did!!!
I subscribe to your channel because you are the most realistic homestead channel on you tube. When we learn from our mistakes we are less likely to repeat them. God bless
Sorry it happened, but no one was hurt ! I LOVE YOU GUYS !!!!!!!🥰🥰
Look into concrete barriers for the new compost bin. No worries about fire that way and you can stack them as high as you want.

And you really only need them behind the pile. Much easier to fill, turn and empty!
Love your content Evan! Your still keeping it real after all the years. Onwards and upwards 👍
I work with someone who as a young man put what were thought to be safe / cooled ashes in the garbage can stored in the garage. You can guess what happened to his parent’s garage. His humility in sharing that traumatic story was a life blessing to me and deeply seeded the dangers of miscalculating the temperature of wood ash. Like him, you are humble and honest in sharing your story, something that no one can take away in a critical comment.
my dad told something when i was about 14 and had just done something very stupid. The only people who dont make mistakes are those that do nothing. That always stuck with me and my observation over the years is that he was 100%correct. Owning our mistakes is the mark of a solid personality, dont worry about the trolls
I really appreciate you're transparency, and integrity.
You are very authentic, and you always show a teaching moment to rest of us. Glad nothing of value was lost. Keep doing what you doing.
Why would anybody tear you up over what happened? We learned a valuable lesson at your expense and watched an entertaining video on top of it. Thanks.
Well, phooey. Sorry this happened, team. Don’t beat yourself up over the critics. It’s much easier to critique from a distance. You two are out there getting things done. You’ll recover from this setback, and your end result will be as fantastic as all your other improvements to what was a seriously neglected property when y’all bought it. Be proud of your accomplishments. This one you’ll laugh about one of these days. Honest!
Accidents happen, nothing was significantly lost, and a lesson learned. Thanks for Sharing, some of us wouldn’t have the opportunity to know what to look for and it could be much worse.
Nobody hurt, no building burned. Live and learn like we all do! Great video lesson!
it happens Evan, don't beat yourself up buddy throughout life we all make mistakes and you learn from them, be blessed it wasn't worse than it was.
Thanks for being so honest. That is why I love watching your videos. You are human. 💕🙏
Undoubtedly you will get relies from critics. Knowing that you still put out this video. Respect for that. Everyone makes mistakes. Just glad the compost bin was the only casualty. Now you get to make a better bin.
Thankfully nothing else was damaged, and you are both safe. It could have been much worse.
I'm glad there wasn't any more damage or worse. Thanks for sharing.
Hey don't worry about it, that will be some of the best compost you will ever see!!!!!!!!
That is just what happens on the farm we learn from our Mistakes. I saw you put the ash on the pile and said to myself hope they were not hot. Look what happened!! good thing the fire only damaged a small area.
Wow, Evan, I’m deeply sorry this happened to you and Rebecca, it was a mistake anyone burning wood could have made. Don’t beat yourself up to much, after all that’s what you call being human, we all make mistakes.
Don’t blame yourself I’m just thankful you all were at home and able to get it out🙏
it's too bad this had to happen to you, but you turned your adversity into an important lesson for all of your subscribers ,thank you for that. keep up the good work
No one was hurt. "Things" can always be replaced. I've always respected your honesty in admitting your mistakes. Good luck in the future.
No worries we all make mistakes I love your farm
This is probably repeat info, but consider having 2 of the smaller buckets so that each load of ashes has longer sit-time outside, and also grab a brick or large rock to put on the lids in case of wind. Fires are scary AF...so glad this one was caught in time to not spread out and grow.
Hi, Evan! No negative comments here. I admire your honesty.
I'm glad everything is all right on your farm!
I am so glad you are all safe, and no animals were hurt. Lesson learned my friend. Chalk it up to life and learning. You got this.
I work for a ready mix company here in West Central Illinois and we make large 2000 pound retaining wall blocks. Generally sell for 35-40 bucks. Have to check around your area but that would be a good way to make a compost bin that would almost be indestructible and last for a very long time.
So sorry ! Fires are scary! Glad you were home! Thanks for sharing!
Don't worry Evan If thats the worst mistake you have made on the farm in a while you are way ahead of most people
Brother, it could happen to anybody! As far as I know, a hot compost pile is the goal! Maybe just short of actual flames, eh? lol Glad it all worked out. Maybe just a compost "pile" might be better. Away from anything else flammable. Thanks for showing it all...not just the things that went as planned. God bless you two.
Well lessen learned, make a fixed water source close to your compost bin, also good for summer! Thank god you guys were on it.
Sorry for the misfortunes, glad you're both safe.
That is one of the things I have grown to like about your videos, You are up front and admit to short coming and yes you have made mistakes but haven't we all been guilty of that, I really enjoy You and Rebecca you make a great couple.
Both my grandparents farmed to make a living and that was back in the less modern days of course. I can't image the lessons they learned the hard way. I tell all my kids that people can take away everything you have but one thing folks can't take away is that they live an honorable life. Your example of owning up to your mistakes is exactly the integrity that I have taught my kids. Keep on truckin!!!!
Over 40 years ago I was a garbage man for an alpine ski town. Most of the homes were heated with wood so we encountered wood ash in the garbage pails. Twice our garbage truck started on fire from live coals in the ashes. The procedure was to get as far from buildings dump out the truck and call the fire department. Then we would have to get a loader and dump truck to clean up the mess. Also I do not think you make any more mistakes than anyone else but you are honest about it. Cheers from Canada where it is currently -30F. ~ulrich
Here’s the way I look at it, it doesn’t matter if comments are good or bad it helps the channel engagement, which is what makes money. I have videos where I’ve done stuff wrong, and people have torn me up for it, and I’ve made more money on those videos than all of the rest lol. Keep up the great work, sir, love your content
Thats what I like about the channel is you see everyday life and keep it real. I can guarantee you that it has happened before because it happened to me, and no one was hurt, and I learned from it. Glad Rebecca seen it before it got too bad. Now you have a reason to build it the way you need it to be.
I honestly thought to myself when I saw you put the ashes on, and then said how short the period of time, “oh man, I hope those coals are actually out.” So, so sorry this happened. Glad you caught it. I think I would be reluctant though, to put back so fast that hay. I’d be letting it sit for a while, just to be sure.
I know I'm not the only one to say this, but I appreciate that you don't try to hide or cover up your mistakes. No one's perfect, but that's what makes life interesting.
Great content for safety and lesson learned--thanks for sharing Evan!
Actually I think it's amazing your not blaming on something else and your taking complete responsibility. Not alot of men would do that. Sorry this happened but am super glad noone got hurt. The wood and compose can be replaced.
Stay safe it happens keep up the great work love your videos thank you
Glad you were able to catch the fire right away. It could have been worse.
Look on the bright side you turned the compost heap over 😊
I’m glad you caught it when you did and you were able to handle it by yourself
I refer to the rolling magnet that I have as the "mine sweeper" - the mines being the screws, nails, bolts or other steel objects that can potentially end up blowing holes in a tire.
No one was hurt, no animals were hurt, and property damage was minimal, no major structures were lost or rendered unusable. As "lessons learned on the homestead" go, this is about as good as it could have been. It's good you shared so others might not make the same mistake. You could have easily never shown it or told your audience. I'm glad you are all safe, and now you now you know what not to do.
Your head line got me laughing I'm glad no one got hurt or got out of hand keep safe and god bless
Glad you got it under control when you did. 🙂🇨🇦
Don’t worry no one got hurt. Stuff happens It’s a learning curve. Be safe. Rebecca was your Guarding Angel. She is a keeper. A loyal follower.
We all make mistakes. Your compost Bin got turned over maybe not on your time schedule but it still got done. Praise the Lord your both okay.
It takes a very humble person to show their mistakes. This is why I love your channel so much. You show everything not just the good. My hats off to you
Pete from Just a few acres and your channel are my favorite channels.Keep up the great videos.
Sorry you had to deal with such an unexpected event, Evan. The next day at work must have been tough for both of you. I do see the chickens out scratching in the compost that has been pulled out of the bin. That is exactly what you want to see happening when you make your plans and relocate. Put your chickens to work. They are entertained by the scratching and it's all free organic food! At most, I would build a backer board you can push up against to flip the material. But given the amount of material that you are producing, I believe you have outgrown the board structures. I suggest it's time for either a simple pile or if you want to get fancy, build a windrow over time. With a windrow, you can harvest the old material while you are adding fresh to the "new" end. All you need is a high, well drained location that is relatively flat and out of sight from the driveway. Time to make things simpler for yourself given the amount of work you have to do. And really, there is no way to make a compost pile pretty. And by going simpler - you'll have better compost to spread in the spring. Everybody wins, even the chickens!
Evan, close call. Glad it wasnt worse and not by the animal bank barn. Over the winter, weld up a skid for a 250 gallon IBC tote. Set it up with a gas powered pressure washer or high flow water pump for use as a portable fire suppression system that you can move with one of the tractors. Or put it on a trailer and then you could move it with your pickup truck. For the future compost bin, consider a filled cinderblock design. Or weld one up with the drill pipe. If you decide on wood, maybe try to find used heavy equipment pads that are put down for excavators Glad Rebecca caught it in time!
Mistakes happen. Don’t be so hard on yourself assigning fault. You had the foresight to place the compost area far enough away from your house to keep that out of the equation. Be grateful it was only a two hour added chore. Now you can weld some oil pipe together and make a better area. Look forward to watching your future videos, mistakes and all. Thanks for sharing!
Evan. Glad it didn’t get too bad outta hand. That’s a blessing. By the way we didn’t know you was scared of lightning. Glad wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been.
Evan, don’t beat yourself up about this. I appreciate that you share the things that don’t accordingly to the plan. We all make mistakes. Mistakes are great learning opportunities. Sorry you guys had to experience this. Have a great rest of your Friday and weekend. Thank you.
The only man or woman, who doesn't make a mistake, is the person who doesn't do anything. Thanks for sharing and God Bless you both.
THE SILVER LINING…you will get a new compost bin out of the experience! Smile, Tim in northern TN
Glad you guys were able to get it under control. This is a teaching video and you are showing others what could happen on a farm.
The main reason I watch your channel is because you show your mistakes. You’re not perfect nor do you try to portray yourself that way . please keep on being you love you guys.
Glad you two are ok
We’re glad there were no injuries to people or animals or damage to more property than there was. Stay safe.
Glad everything is fine. A new project to add to the list! Be safe and well.
Sorry about what happened, you always learn by your mistakes, keep up the good work ,all the best .
You are not going to get any grief from me. Just something we all can learn from. We can thank you for that.
Mistakes happen, still one of my favorite channels to watch because you share reality. Your videos are always very through and informative, that’s why I keep watching.
I don't normally comment on anything, I've been following y'all for awhile, I just want to say thanks for sharing things like this too, usually videos make things look very easy, then I get frustrated trying it, and it doesn't work out, thanks for keeping it real
No worries, brother. No one got hurt, the damage was minimal, and you learned a lesson... that's a "win-win!" : )
I once read a news article about a hunter who walked across a field that a winery was using to dump the grape solids after the squeezing process. As he walked across the field, the ground collapsed beneath him and immediately started cooking his legs. The grape detritus was generating so much heat from the compost process that it was smoldering at extremely high temperatures. He wound up losing both legs below his knees. That story makes me wonder if your compost was already at a temperature to promote combustion in the hay, and an ember from your ashes accelerated the process.
We all make mistakes, no one sees ours. Love your channel, watch you guys all the time !!!
Evan, Don’t beat yourself up. Accidents happen. On a side note, I don’t think the ashes were the culprit. Based on the burn patterns on the boards the fire started in the opposite side of the bin and started low. Fire from the ashes would have burned more evenly across the top of the bins.

I was thinking the same thing.
I almost burnt down my kitchen when I was a child cooking an apple pie. Thankfully for you it was only a compost pile. Glad everybody was OK.
I am so glad you guys are safe.
Thankful no one was hurt and no major buildings were damaged, mistakes happen Evan, you are human and things happen, you learn by your own mistakes, God Bless🙏🙏.
The man who never makes a mistake is the guy who never does anything. You have made some mistakes but you are fearless and willing to tackle most any job.
Glad everything turned out ok. Having a fire get away from you out in the country far from a fire department sure is scary. Good on you for sharing this unfortunate experience and living to tell the tale and fight another day.🥶✌🏻👍🏻🇨🇦
It's funny when you did that video where you put the ashes on the compost heap, my immediate thought was I hope he waited for a few days...but you are so competent that I was sure that you were safe. On the bright side, the perfect excuse to build the compost heap V2.0 it will be a huge improvement on compost heap V1.0.
Wow, so glad it wasn't worse. We ALL make mistakes. Thank you for being vulnerable and honest that you are human. Blessings!
My best video, as far as watch numbers, is when I shared a mistake I made cutting down a tree. It fell backward and just missed the tractor. Sharing mistakes to show others what can happen is a big part of any channel. Love your work.
Sorry that happened, but glad it was not worse than it was. Thank you for sharing this, part of the reason I enjoy your channel is your willingness to share the real world experiences of life.
Thank goodness the damage was only limited to the composting bins and that it didn't spread. So sorry to hear about this and pleased that neither of you or the animals was hurt.
Thanks Evan. Tough luck. You learn from our mistakes
Thats one way to get the new compost bin you been wanting. 😂
From what im seeing, and what you described, it doesnt seem like it was the wood ashe that started it, it seems to me that the compost itself generated its own heat and self-combusted. Especially with it being on the opposite side the ashe was on. Just my 2 cents as a retired firefighter.

I agree. Self combustion.
I was cleaning out our fireplace a couple of days after our last fire. I was surprised to see some red coals going into my bucket after that period of time. I suppose hot coals will stay hot until they either run out of fuel or oxygen. Glad it wasn't too catastrophic. We live on 35 acres of woods and one of my biggest fears is to set it on fire.

I managed to burn about 20 acres of pasture by accident. Fire is no joke.
Just remember we all learn from are mistakes.and life goes on.Do not beat your self up over this or let anyone else because we all have done things and had to learn from it.thanks for sharing
I tip my hat to you for owning your mistakes and not being afraid to show them publicly.
Stuff happens! No one got hurt and no real significant damage, just a mess to clean up. Don’t be worried about all those perfect people that never have anything positive to say. I’m sure they’d never share a video of some of their escapades that didn’t work out according to plan. Just remember life’s not about how many times you get knocked down nut how many times you get back up, dust yourself off and March on. You are amazingly talented and can do so much for yourself. You are an inspiration to us small time DIY’ers that only wish we could do half the stuff you are able to. You both rock!!!
My husband and I love watching you guys. No matter what… at least you’re honest no matter how it makes you look to others. I almost burned our chicken coop down😂 don’t mind others … you didn’t have to show it but you did! Don’t let them get you down!
It can happen to anyone. This is why i love your channel. You are honest with your videos and even if things didn't go the right way you still post it to help other people. Thank you
Glad you guys are ok. Things happen, we learn from our mistakes and move on. Blessings
