I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East: Critter Crossings in the Cascades

This film is a follow up to “Cascade Crossroads,” which chronicled the story of partnerships between WSDOT, conservation groups, and other state agencies to make improvements to I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass for both drivers and wildlife. This film goes into more detail regarding the important environmental and wildlife connectivity work taking place along the project.

As a commercial truck driver I drive the snoqualmie pass everyday and watched the overpass being built over several years. I always though what a waste of taxpayer money to build this giant overpass but now that I’ve watched this presentation and see the animals actually using this overpass and being kept safe, I’m proud of Washington State for these efforts to protect wildlife. I HATE Roadkill and it sickens me to see dead innocent animals on the side of the road; I applaud these efforts to protect them!

BTW, since Europeans are so keen on reminding Americans on their youth, shouldn't the Dutch and the other citizens be a tad embarrassed it took them so long to implement the idea? P.S. Remind yourself of the history of overhunting done by European aristocracy, not only in Europe, but when they arrived in North America as well. Let's not forget to include African safaris! Etc... There's one of these as well as a tunnel under Oracle Road just north of Tucson bordering the Catalina mountains. Mule-deer activity has increased dramatically on both sides of Oracle since the underpass and overpass were built four years ago. Badgers, bobcats, javelina, coati, cottontails, coyotes, foxes, jackrabbits, raccoons, roadrunners and skunks use it regularly and mountain lions and bighorn sheep have also been spotted near it.

I lived in Arizona my entire life and moved to WA in my early 20s. I got lost in on the way to my home in Bellevue stopped on I-90 in Snoqualmie. The beauty left me speechless, and I spent hours on the side of the road eating blackberries and taking it all in. I moved back to Arizona after five years but really enjoyed the entire state with the endless opportunities and wealth it granted me. What a great state! I'm happy to learn that WSDOT is managing the transporation system with such care.

This must have cost millions to accomplish, but millions that were put to such good use. My heart is full that all these departments of people came together to get all the species of correct plants replanted. To think of all the different creatures that need to get from one side to the other and create their habitat. To even make the roadways where avalanches are prevalent lifted so that they went below rather than onto the roads, just brilliant. You are all truly amazing and what the world needs.🐝
