I-80 East (CA), San Francisco To Albany
This video follows I-80 East thru San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, thru the MacArthur Maze, and concludes at the I-80/I-580 West split in Albany. Includes footage of the brand new S-curve, installed during the Labor Day Weekend of 2009.

My folks and I lived in SF only for a short time, but I remember our often driving this bridge. We used it often to go to Oakland, and it brought us into the Bay Area moving from Minnesota... taking us east when we moved to Brooklyn.
2:20... it's good to remember the "Dead Man's Curve" some 2500 or so miles east of here, on I-90 in Cleveland. Whenever I or my wife drive on highways such as this in Buffalo and environs, we treat curves like this in that fashion... SLOW DOWN.
I have a complaint - your videos keep me up nearly all night! LOL - Absolutely love your work - more, more!
Indeed, San Francisco, and the entire Bay Area in general, are full of interesting freeways and scenic highways.
this is a great highway.......looking over the bay.
this is a great highway.......looking over the bay.........we took this bridge when we went to union city.
I dont know why I never saw this video awsome... I love the bridge...
I believe this is probably your best video. Great annotations and video coverage, nostalgic, and the music is awesome. Probably why I have it on my iPod now! It would be even better if you covered a westbound trip on the bridge too.
Great video and music. I'm planning a trip for July or Aug where I will be driving this exact stretch of road!
I'm happy you enjoyed watching. :-)
Funny that you mention this, because I just might get around to filming all of Interstate 880, tomorrow, pending the weather. :-)
Hey, thanks! A westbound drive will only be possible during the summer months, and during the mid-morning hours, when the sun will be angled farther southeast during those hours. At this time of the year, the sun will interfere with the camcorder, even at 9 a.m., and by 11 a.m., the image quality will be far too subpar for what I want to present. However, expect a night time video of Oakland & San Francisco, with a westbound drive over the Bay Bridge, fairly soon. :-)
Yes. There is a massive toll plaza (20+ lanes, I believe) on the westbound side just east of the bridge on the Oakland side.
Nice Ride
I am expecting to be there in three weeks! Never been in SF, never been in CA, in fact never been anywhere west of Lousiana or Illinois.
wow! you get a very nice view of the down town at the start! Did you get a chance to see the mythbusters while you were in San Francisco? lol
Honestly, I think I only watched about 5 minutes of it, and I don't remember a single second of what I saw. The internet has really taken away much of the time I used to spend watching TV, and now I generally only watch TV for sports and maybe the news.
@SecretSniper67: Hey, thanks a lot. I experiemented with different musical genres before settling on the dance, trance (nothing too fast, though), techno and electronica subgenres. I just felt like the speed of the songs matched best with the pace of my videos.
very well done! that was super cool!
My grandpa used to work in the building on the right at 01:04.
To be honest, I was supposed to drive that ramp, just a mere 3 hours after the accident happened. Needless to say, I had to make alternate travel arrangements, that day. I took I-5 South from Sacramento to I-580 West, to get to San Jose :-)
Excellent video! There's alot going on those 4 Minutes. Postcard moment at Approx :40
I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that there's also an additional 2 lanes on the very right end, reserved exclusively for carpools during rush hours, and buses on a 24 hour period. Can you confirm this?
Yeah! I do remember that. I honestly don't know what the final outcome was.
That's sounds logical. However, CalTrans officially considers the Central Freeway to be a part of US 101, as evidenced by the mileage markers, and the fact that traffic counts collected on the Central Freeway refer to that section as U.S. 101. I contacted CalTrans a couple of years ago to find out the exact routing of US 101. Plus, the exit numbers coincide with the Central Freeway and the rest of US 101.
Ha, no? I lived in the Bay Area for most of my life until March of 2009, and still spend about 10 days a month in the Bay Area. When were they in town?
I take this route everyday except i switch onto 580 once i get off the bay bridge towards Fremont
They live in San Fransisco. Did you ever see their show on Discovery?
I'll work with my annotations to fit that in. I was thinking about that, while I was working on this video. It's a worthy fact to include, for sure.
Interesting that you mention the cautions of the 'S' curve on the Bay Bridge and the fatal truck crash that was involved....I assume you recall that the family of the driver of that truck attempted to sue Caltrans for the accident...claiming there wasn't enough warnings in place about the danger of the particular curve...even though the driver had crossed this path many times since it was part of his route. Not sure what the final outcome was on the lawsuit...
So there are only tolls westbound?
I'm not talking about that, what I meant was the section between the first interchange in the video and the Bay Bridge
I know there are 2-3 lanes out there on the right hand side, not sure under what conditions they open them. I know that one of the HOV or Bus-Only approaches dumps you into that right hand pocket cuz I accidentally took that approach one time and found myself over there. I think there are a total of 24 lanes if my memory serves me correctly.
On the westbound Bay Bridge approach, do they have EZPass, or something like it?
Ahem You forgot to mention that I-80 goes to Teaneck,NJ , otherwise great video !
@StukInBuf Never mind... I see they have FasTrak. The SFO version of EZPass.
Traffic at about 4:30 pm is quicksand
"Escape Me" by Tiesto, featuring C.C. Sheffield. All of my song titles are featured at the very end of every video. Hope this helps. :-)
1:08 Looks creepy under that bridge.
How much is the toll?
Nevermind me...I was being retarded. :-) I've always wondered about where the official start of I-80 starts, because CalTrans does traffic counts along the Skyway and attributes them as I-80 counts, but I've read about I-80 not actually starting until the Bay Bridge.
