Interstate 65 (I-65) meanders across 366 miles (589 km) of the Alabama countryside linking six of the state's ten largest cities. The highway links together many important roadways that make commerce inside and outside of the state's boundaries possible. It starts at Interstate 10 near Mobile. The route passes through the major cities of Montgomery, Birmingham, and Decatur before entering Tennessee in the north near the town of Ardmore.
The entire Alabama portion of I-65 is dedicated as Heroes Highway, in honor of the CIA officer Johnny "Mike" Spann and all of the people who died during the September 11 attacks.
At Chilton County, I-65 enters the Birmingham, Alabama, metropolitan area. Approximately halfway between Montgomery and Birmingham, it passes Clanton the county seat, where the water tower, visible from the road, is shaped and painted to resemble a huge peach. Between mile markers 212 and 219, I-65 was designated "War on Terror Memorial Highway" in 2014.
From mile marker 238 to 290 I-65 carries at least 6 lanes of traffic. I-65 intersects I-459 in Hoover, then passes through the cities of Vestavia Hills and Homewood, which often generate heavy traffic. As the interstate passes by downtown Birmingham, south-bound travelers have a view of the Vulcan statue atop Red Mountain. At the north edge of downtown, I-65 intersects I-20/I-59 with a cross-over interchange, often called "Malfunction Junction".
North of Birmingham at mile 266, interchange ramps provide access to parallel US 31. It is here that I-65 meets the eastern terminus of I-22, which heads northwest to Memphis, Tennessee, filling in a gap in the Interstate system. The interstate then continues 98 miles (158 km) in the general direction of Huntsville, passing the city of Cullman on the way. After entering the Decatur Metropolitan Area, in southern Morgan County, the interstate passes Decatur. The highway connects the Decatur and Huntsville Metropolitan Areas as it crosses Wheeler Lake (Tennessee River) on a 2.6-mile (4.2 km) bridge. The interstate emerges again into the fringes of Decatur, in an open area of seemingly "endless" cotton fields where it intersects, inside Decatur, with SR 20, US 72 Alternate, and the spur-route, I-565 to Huntsville.

That was very light traffic - that is not normal. It can get bumper to bumper and like a parking lot.
I've lived here all of my life. I've never seen that stretch so empty. That a highly populated area.

Right. I've never seen the interstate that empty before. I live here in Birmingham and I'm always on the road. Our traffic is q headache most times.

@@MrLdevelle Pass in what traffic..?? Nah, never. There are 5 interstates (I-65, I-20, I-59, I-22, and I-459) that converge into Birmingham. The downtown junction alone see over close to 300K vehicles daily pass through it. Huntsville don't have the roads and will never have them to overtake Birmingham.

@@deronkirksey860 I agree, Birmingham’s metro area is about double the size of Huntsville thus why it seems like a larger city. About 490k compared to 1.1 million. Sure Birminghams’s city population is shrinking but that’s only because all of its people are moving to the suburbs that is apart of the metropolitan area.

Indeed-- in fact, the last part here jogs memories of when my father and I went to the Wal-Mart DC (distribution center) in Cullman; back in those days, I-22 didn't exist, and the 20-59/65 interchange had much older signage (let alone that there were fewer lanes on 65). Nowadays, it's all different, and much improved (more to see).

True. More people will come along as we go to more places.
That's my commute to work every day. Homewood to Gardendale. Even when traffic is busy, it's not too bad.....except at Malfunction Junction where I-20/59 intersects with I-65.

Isn't it better since they reconstructed the junction? If not then it's probably just drivers who don't pay attention

Birminghams stretch of the I-65 corridor is famously/infamously deceptive to outsiders, especially on camera. It appears as trees... downtown... trees. There's more urban and industrial development along its l-59 and I-20 corridors giving it some semblance of being existing city...😁 Its an beautiful drive anyway, and its ironically one of the areas most congested arteries at peak times.

I live in Birmingham more so toward I-459/ Hwy 280 area. And seeing 65 that empty is so odd. Any time of the day it’s busy. Lucky day for you to say the least. They recently about a year and half ago made Alabaster (where the video started) to Valleydale 4 lanes both ways. But from 459 interchange to Malfunction Junction there is so much work needed. Including another lane. That area is the most troublesome spot in the city beside 280. Growth but no improvement with the roads.
That stretch of I-65 from entering Jefferson County to after malfunction junction hasn't been repaved for over 40 years. I bought a new car last year and I swore I'd never drive that stretch again. It's awful. I live off of I-20 east of Birmingham and they've repaved that interstate three times in the last 11 years.

It appears to be the original concrete pavement. Paving it over with asphalt would only be a band-aid as the imperfections in the concrete joints would creep through to the surface in a short period of time (I noticed a couple of sections in the video where the concrete was paved over with asphalt that illustrate this). I assume the original concrete either needs diamond grinding, or complete replacement.

I find it hilarious how I-65, one of the big X5 interstates, ends in the north. It ends at an intersection with a light and on the opposite side is a driveway
I 65 from Birmingham to Montgomery is the worst stretch of highway in the south. Always busy and most people don’t understand that the left lane is for passing. Some of these idiots will camp out in the left lane and drive 10 mph less than the speed limit.

I-65 North from Montgomery, Al. to Birmingham, Al. is for the most part a good riding interstate but there are parts of I-65 No. just south of downtown Birmingham that are terrible with rough riding!

The only thing worse than Alabama roads are Alabama DRIVERS! There should PSA's on how to MERGE...what a 4 way stop sign is and how to change lanes.....and the worst of all, MOTORCYCLES ALSO USE THE ROADS! I had to quit riding because of this insane state!!!! I got "T BONED" on 31 with my son on the back, lucky to be alive! Assh*le ignored a RED light!

Lmao… our drivers here can be bad and I understand the bad experience personally that has affected your opinions, but before you hand us the crown for dumb, arrogant, rude drivers; please visit our nations Capitol city. DC drivers must not know what a turning signal is for or where it is located but they know how to blow their horn at you because they decide they’re going to change lanes. They missed the part in the drivers manual about yielding to on coming traffic, etc..

@@somethingserious4090 That's why I have a dashcam and rear cam. I record these idiots everyday. I drive a service vehicle, I'm on the road 8-12 hours a day. And yes they are everywhere, all over the country, but we have a special kind of stupid here.
