Great video as always. I travel this stretch of highway whenever I head south from SF to San Luis Obispo - 280 to 85 then to 101. 280, to me, always looks its best when it's foggy (not heavy fog but enough to cloud the sky up) the green looks better when the sun isn't showcasing how dry it's been. But when it is sunny, the hills and mountains to the west look fantastic when the fog is just creeping right over them. On the return trips, I like the hwy to myself so I'm usually on the 280 by 1am

Glad you enjoyed, Luke! I grew up less than a mile from the Woodside Rd exit in this video, and have been on it literally thousands of times. I always took it for granted, until I started exploring other parts of the country, and only in the past several years have I come to realize just how special of a drive this really is, considering it's a major commuter route along the Peninsula.

This freeway is strikingly similar to the A1 Naples-Rome motorway, which has six lanes instead of eight, though. The landscape is very similar, especially to the stretch after entering Latium, about the last hour and a half's drive before reaching Rome. There are a lot of beautiful sights, National Parks and places of interest along that motorway, too. Thanks a lot for your great videos, Brent. They let me dream of driving on American freeways.

Love that freeway. I drove it a lot while doing my newspaper internship in Oakland. Another factoid: The San Andreas Fault parallels 280 just to the west. I believe the reservoirs near 280 are on the fault line.

Thank you immensely for your videos, Brent. Because I can't afford the gas to drive around California (or anywhere else, really), your video tours, in combo with the music, pull me in and allow me to escape into them and feel like I'm there rolling down the road. I really enjoy them!

The truly amazing thing is that the suburban sprawl that runs for 60+ miles from San Francisco to South San Jose lies just on the other side of the hills, to the right of this freeway. San Mateo County citizens and local environmentalist groups have repeatedly made efforts to maintain a permanent open space boundary. The end result is what you see in this video. US 101 along the SF Peninsula, never more than 4 miles to the east, is one of California's busier and most congested freeways.

Really glad you enjoyed. To be honest, the directions you gave me between SF and the Central Coast is pretty much my same choice of routes, too. I grew up in Redwood City, so I know all about seeing that coastal fog roll over the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Thanks for watching!

  • @FreewayBrent

Yeah, exactly! You can clearly see the extreme contrast of the suburban sprawl along the bayside, compared to the near wilderness along I-280, by watching my US 101 video, driving up to San Francisco. And yet, the 2 freeways never lie more than 4 miles apart along the Peninsula. Glad you enjoyed the ride. :-)

Great video, features and audio is fantastic! SF Bay area is the Mainland US's best place to live - natural beauty, cool culture, good climate (except on the oceanside of the hill), too bad it is way to expensive... I-280 is pretty but not the most scenic in California, look at: I-5 near the Oregon border, US-101 leaving SF north to Marin, etc.

lived in Los altos 1966-76 so I saw 280 built piece by piece, drove dads 59 black Vette on it at 135 mph and when I bought it in 1982 and built a 350, it went much faster. threw a rod at 140mph going south just before San Antonio. and in high school we "drove the clover leaf" over and over at San Antonio- 280. Foothill expressway was the RR track until late 1967.

Thanks, man! Glad you enjoyed. It does get congested, on and off for about 7 miles from CA 92, down to Sand Hill Road in the morning (1/3 of all venture capitalist deals in the United States goes down, just off the Sand Hill Road exit to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars every year), and then northbound for a few miles in the evening. Rush hour only lasts for about 1.5 hours during the morning and afternoon, though.

Thanks a lot! I agree; there are definitely more scenic stretches of freeway in California, but it's hard to find a more scenic urban one than I-280. US 101 through Marin County is another one for sure (as you mentioned in your comment); I'm going to feature that stretch in the next month or two.

Hey there! Sorry I didn't respond sooner; I've been on vacation in Vancouver for the past week. Glad you enjoyed. As of right now, I don't have a camcorder that is suitable for night-time videos. I sold my Canon Vixia HF200, 'cause the image stabilization on it was poor, and the current camcorder I use, the Flip Ultra 3rd generation, does not do well under poor lighting conditions. But agree, this would be a GREAT song for a night time video.

I remember taking this freeway in the mid mid 1980's in high school. I could leave my girlfriends home in portola valley at 1am and drive to belmont and exit on the 92 to ralston ave and the entire time on the freeway I would never see a single car. NOT ONE. It was like my own personal autobahn with no cars and no speed limits. Of course this was 1985 and there were no cell phones no internet and no google and NO EFFING PEOPLE ON THE 280 FREEWAY PAST 1OPM-EVER.

Generally speaking, it is *definitely* greener, the further north you head. You can, however, find some forests up in the higher mountain ranges in Southern California. Type in, "Angeles National Forest" on wikipedia, and you'll see a nice picture. It lies just north of Los Angeles.

I grew up in Redwood City, so I've been on this freeway more than any other in my life (even more than US 101, since I only lived a minute from the Woodside Rd exit). I was trying to figure out a slot in the video to mention the San Andreas Fault, but I felt like adding anymore annotations was simply going to burden my viewers with too much reading, lol. And yes, you're right, the Crystal Springs Reservoir (both the northern and southern halves) lie right on top of the fault line.
