Interstate 240 (I-240) is a 19.27-mile-long (31.01 km) auxiliary Interstate Highway in the US state of Tennessee that forms a bypass around the southern and eastern neighborhoods of Memphis. Combined, I-240 and its parent, I-40, form a contiguous beltway around most of Memphis. I-240 runs from I-40 in Midtown Memphis to I-40 and Sam Cooper Boulevard in East Memphis. Throughout its length, it provides access to I-55, multiple U.S. and state routes, and the Memphis International Airport. The segment between the western terminus and I-55 is a north-south route, and the segment between I-55 and the eastern terminus runs east to west. Throughout its length, I-240 is designated as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway, the W.B. Fowler Sr. Expressway, and the Avron B. Fogelman Expressway.
The first sections of I-240 were opened in 1962, and the present-day route was completed in 1971. I-240 was first envisioned in the 1950s as a complete circular beltway around Memphis. The western segment between I-40 and I-55 was designated as I-255 until 1973, however. Citizen opposition to the routing of I-40 through Overton Park in the central part of Memphis resulted in I-40 being rerouted onto what was originally the northern loop of I-240 in 1981. As a result of this change, I-240's exits are still numbered according to their original mileage, which today is inconsistent with its length.

I love this view of Memphis, Tennessee I used to go their once a year in the summer as well.
Really loved Memphis back in the day during the years 2001-2003 .. those were the great times to live and be in Memphis as a little kid myself and the tourist attraction it was ❤ .. the birthplace of many Southern hip hop artists, Elvis Presley, amongst the BBQ festivals, culture and atmosphere but the southern and eastern sides of the city are the one of the most dangerous places to be with the crime rate especially murders burglaries and drug scenes, which makes Memphis one of the top 5 most dangerous cities in the country behind St. Louis, New Orleans, Baltimore, and Detroit

Whenever I'm in Memphis, I try to avoid the stretch of I-240 from the airport east to I-40. Those drivers along that stretch give Atlanta drivers a run for their money.

It looks like many portions of I-240 need road improvements. Many, many bad potholes!

TN Hwy 385 (especially from I-240 to Hacks Cross Rd.) definitely gives I-240 a run for its money 🤧 some people on that highway go at least 80mph!! Meanwhile others trying to go under 60. 🙄 Truly they need to raise the speed limit on all Memphis interstates to at least 65mph people not tryna take all day to get from South Memphis to East Memphis. 😑 If you not in a hurry TAKE THE STREET. 🤦🏾♂️ smh

Memphis has stupid environmental speed limits. I call them stupid because LITERALLY NO ONE follows the speed limits there. People are going 75-85 mph where its posted 65/trucks 55. IMO, the speed limits should be digital and range from 70-75 mph depending on the traffic, area, and road design. Im mainly speaking for every road outside the “beltway.”
People in Memphis drive how little kids think you’re supposed to drive.

Mane it’s worse driving in some areas of Memphis than Dallas or Atlanta 🤧 you got people trying to go 50-55 mph (on the interstate 🤨🙄) while folks who really tryna get to their destination are going (70+ mph) Most Memphians don’t have a lot of patience so it’s important to just get where your going and don’t be one of those slow drivers.. if you going under 60, take the street imo 🤷🏾♂️
We got a lot of goofy driver's in Memphis so you got to be aware of your surroundings and make sure you not in the fast lane going slow LOL... Is a lot of people who really don't get the art of driving they just kind of getting a car and go... 😡🤬🤤🤦🏾♂️
