Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV Road Trip to Canada: Maine-Québec-New Brunswick Loop

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If our Quick Charge session with KEMPOWER up in Canada piqued your interest in the fast charging options serving eastern Canada, here's the wider trip in our 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5.
This video focuses on Québec and New Brunswick, with a soupçon of northern Maine's DCFC limitations dropped in at the end... hopefully that will change soon, as NEVI funding goes to work.
Note that many of the charging stops on this trip were not optimally planned, as I made decisions around testing apps/cards and progressing from 50kW to 100kW and then the full dynamic power of the KEMPOWER solution (video here: • KEMPOWER Satellites Co... . They became separate videos, in the end, but the flow still serves to showcase how EV travel has changed in the past five years.
We were last up in Canada with our 2017 Bolt EV when 50-100kW hardware was the norm, as you can see here: • Bolt EV Canada Road Tr... . Updated hardware from Electric Circuit and new installations from Petro-Canada and Electrify Canada have since upped the power and stall count, in busier regions.
This IONIQ 5 EV road trip to Canada emphasizes both the latest hardware for DC fast charging and the gaps that we still have to fill on both sides of the border.
We hope you find the information useful. If so, consider fueling the channel with a cup of coffee via Ko-Fi so that we can make more!

    As you noticed almost all the eastern Canadian operators have roaming agreements with each other and I believe Chargepoint participates as well so you could have used your Chargepoint card or app at the locations you used circuit électrique.

    Great to know, thank you. We use ChargePoint a lot locally and it's useful to have all the session data in one app, so I'll give that a go next time.

    Perfect timing. Circuit Electric is now issuing rfid cards again. A year ago, they weren't issuing to the US. I was just able to order one while watching your video. The problem I had last year was my phone plan wasn't international and I couldn't activate via the app unless I had wifi. Now we can go to Quebec over the Christmas Holiday without worry.

    Great to hear! The cards are definitely nice to have when you're far from home. The fact that the networks mostly talk to each other and accept the others' cards is another bonus to making travel up that way smoother, as I found with the NB Energie stations.

    Kempower! I say it again, Kempower! Cool for you to be able to swagger into CA and have some disconnect from things US for a spell. St. Hubert is a brand I had been fond of when doing work in Montreal several years ago. My wife and I even spoke briefly about moving to CA. She is a school teacher and the pay is much better there. For now though, we must rely on good folks like you who bring us the CA life in video form. Thx for the vid. I enjoyed watching.

    Thanks, it was a fun, flying visit. Nova Scotia is also on our list for a summer camping trip, but free EA miles have us prioritizing US-based sights first. We've always had a good time in Quebec, although we tend to visit when it's sunny and warm... not so sure I can convince the family to move towards the snow, rather than away from it!

    did a similar trip a few years ago in the NiroEV left Belfast and drove into Canada near the coast to charge, and then north to Woodstock where I have friends and used to live for a few years. Then up the Trans-Canada to Quebec City and then down to Vermont. At that point, travel was much easier in Canada than it was in New England. We still have almost nothing in New Hampshire. Can not figure out to spend th VW money. Mass needs to put a high speed charger in Fitchburg Nice view of N.B.

    Thanks, James, it's always worth remembering how long those across the border have had this infrastructure in place. Especially in comparison to the laggards in New Hampshire! Thankfully, Maine and Vermont have been a bit more on the ball, making it a little easier to get up to Canada from the southern New England states. Back in Mass, there are north of 30 sites across the state that were awarded MassEVIP funds back in 2022 for DCFC, one of which is on route 2, just south of Fitchburg. Sadly, the pace of installation has been glacial and many don't even seem to be under construction yet, despite a Feb. 2024 target date. I haven't been to that site but will try to take a look at some along route 2 before the year is out.

    I get so jealous of you EGMP cars at the paired 200A Chargepoint stations. I was getting 75kW or so at an Oregon Starbucks-Volvo station while an EV6 was getting nearly 120kW. There’s practically no time penalty to use the CPE250s for you guys.

  • @plugandplayEV

    @plugandplayEV

    6 ай бұрын

    It's quite a selling point for road trippers, on top of the aggressive EGMP approach to the charge curve, given how many state entities have added this hardware. Hyundai dealers also appear to be opting for 2 x CPE250 for on-site charging, although they aren't often paired here. Seems to be missing a trick after selling the EVs that can best use them.

    Great to do a road trip in Canada. We are starting to add more higher speed charging hope we accelerate for the next trip you make. 350KW would be the minimum I would install for additional units at existing stations. 50KW is quickly becoming too slow. I hope to buy my second EV soon and hope for ability to make faster charges when I am on a longer trip. Thanks for making great content.

    Thanks for watching, Tim! I've enjoyed your initial videos and love to see more content from north of the border. Canada's latest hardware (Quebec, at least) is the envy of those watching the US infrastructure closely, so it's fun to experience both. Dynamic power is the way to go for larger charge stations, I think. Doesn't matter if a Bolt or a Hummer EV plugs in when you have sufficient power and the capability to move it to whichever stall they've chosen, a la Kempower.

  • @plugandplayEV

    @plugandplayEV

    Québec is probably one of the better areas to charge, due to ample hydroelectric power. It gets a bit more expensive in other areas but generally the prices are good up there. Shame to hear about UK prices but petrol is also significantly more expensive there, so hopefully it still works out more affordable to run an EV?

    You should try using the built in navigation after the October update. It will tell you where to charge and and for how long. Just set DC max to 70 or 80% in infotainment. You will also get battery preconditioing with this.

    Thanks, I've been hearing good things about the update from a few owners and plan to test it again on our Christmas trip. I had a brief look on a familiar route last week and the estimations for arrival SOC did seem to be reasonably accurate. If it can handle elevation changes and factor in temperature, it would be an impressive OTA update.

    Really enjoy these road trips. Still don't roadtrip more than what a 100% charge can get me to and back. Still too nervous about the possibility of chargers not working and getting stranded. It's understandable... still takes some planning to make everything go smoothly (and even then, there are hiccups!) I think starting with a regional trip of 300-400 miles, to an area with ample DCFC and L2 options is always a good place to start. The more you get under your belt, the more confidence it builds and EV trips become an itch that needs scratching.

    The station I visited in Bangor is potentially 125kW but does require the right combination of 800V model and empty second stall to make that happen. Same at locations in Waterville and Newport. The Medway site should be more powerful, as NEVI funding requires at least 150kW. Hoping to see some major improvements up that way in 2024.

    @@plugandplayEV , there are two CPE’s sitting ready to be attached to the grid since June but nothing has happened lately, in Ellsworth behind the McDonalds and in front of the Harbor freight. At the other end of the shopping center are eight Teslas. The Irving that you stopped at is at the end of 395, the other end is in the process of being connected to rt9 , which goes to Calais at that end is an Irving station with a couple of Teslas, so I suspect there will be a couple of CCS stations there soon.
