    It's kind of a fine line when you're doing a road trip with an EV that doesn't have fast charge preconditioning, whether you will spend more time at the next stop waiting for less energy but a slow charge because you're coldgating, versus faster charging speed but needing to recuperate the extra wasted energy. Having an OBD scanner and app like Bjorn has is a good tool, especially if you're more tech-minded, to be able to see exact battery temp.

    Hyundai, the only car company who's able to make its new EV less efficient than its old one. Good Lord...

  • @amiddled

    @amiddled

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jérôme Lévesque-Boucher it isn’t less efficient than the old one. The WLTP rating for efficiency is about the same. What’s different is that it doesn’t charge quite as fast on a 50kw charger, and can’t go over 50kw on faster chargers like the old Ioniq. That’s not an efficiency difference. That’s the sacrifice they made from using a bigger pack with a lower voltage. In return you get more range than the old one.

  • @hugodeandres1497

    @hugodeandres1497

    Herman Willems I disagree. 28kW ioniq is ~1420 kg. 38kW ioniq is ~1550 kg. 9% more weight, 35% more battery capacity. In paper it should be a good tradeoff but it doesn’t seem to translate that good into real life. I think 28kW ioniq is better and more efficient, even if you take into account that the 38kW ioniq is 130kg heavier. It is also supposed to have 44% more range and a better efficiency at 13kW/100km instead of 13.7kW/100km, which is great but is this real? I’m not sure. If they were the same price, having 10 more kW is definitely better.

  • @amiddled

    @amiddled

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hugo de Andrés the efficiency is the same *despite* the extra weight. So, if you introduce weight, the new Ioniq looks even more impressive. The battery being bigger is resulting in more range.

    Fast charging is capital (who on Earth would want to wait 1h or more to charge up to 80≈90% of the car's battery?), and the newest of both is slower on this point, so in my opinion, the new Ionic is a bit worse than its predecessor. In all cases, the day there will have global network of electricity automotive charging points (Ionity, to begin with), slow charging and rapidgate will be complete deal breakers.

    Great video as I await delivery of my Ioniq EV. At 6'5" the Ioniq is a better fit than a Zoe plus the leasing costs in the UK are very reasonable. The 270 km winter range or 165 miles puts a good part of southern UK in easy reach and certainly for me I could do a London round trip with approx. 30 miles in reserve. Roll on March!

    The vast majority of people who buy this car will not use it for regular 1000km journeys. Therefore this is a much better car than its predecessor due to the larger battery, efficiency and better equipment. The 1000km test is not the measure of this car, though the slow charging speeds are disappointing.

    Model 3 SR+ for the win! But seriously, the Zoe and the Ionique are two cars we looked at in the past. We had a 3 and a half hour test drive in the Zoe R110 (52Kwh still in the 'to be announced stage) and liked it. We even stopped off for a quick shopping spree, and it handled multi-story car parking admirably. Our impression was that it would be a magnifant ev for 'local' driving, as long as it woudn't have to do regular long trips' We couldn't test the Ionique, as they didn't have one, in fact, the dearship robustly put us of buying one. However, it's always appealed, but in the long run, it wouldn't have served us for the longer distances we regularly do. Hyundai stock lots of hybrids, and along with every other manufacturer (it seems), resolutely advertisers hybrids, and only hybrids. On the matter of charging speed, is it technically possible for Hyundai to 'software-update', and improve it? Apart from this, the Ionique looks a great car. Your eating technique is second to none by the way.........which is just as well. ;)

    I love the 2020 Ioniq EV. I drive around 100 miles a day and this car is perfect for me.I like the interior and the way it drives. Now that being said, would I want a Tesla or the new Mach-e, yes of course! But, I don't want a 500 dollar payment either and I only lease the Ioniq for just 64 a month. But, even if I had a Tesla I would never take it pass a 250 plus mile drive in one drive. But, that's me..

    Hi Bjorn, do you see any chance that Hyundai updates the car in a couple of months maybe, and change the regulation of the battery temperature? Having said that, I fear that this is part of Hyundai's strategy, to keep the Ioniq not too attractive compared to Kona, which generates probably a better margin. Best regards from an Ioniq28 driver (who would never change for a 38....)

That is what I love about my Ioniq and luckily we own a fossil Van for long distance travelling because I too get 32 kw charging in winter. The door pin (in the door jamb) has a rubber overlay that goes around the plunger, and on rare occasions when the door is closed on it, it will kink and go around the plunger rather than compress with it properly. If the rubber has managed to develop a crack, it makes this more likely to happen. I'm a car alarm installer and we have seen it on a few occasions on this era of Hyundai/Kia with the door pins, but it is very common with the pin under the hood.

    I am also considering buying ioniq with 28 soon… Do you have any recommendations on what trim to look for? In Sweden a second hand model 2018/2019 cost around 20k euro. The one I am negotiating with doesn’t have leather etc. It doesn’t have “dead eye” warnings… Can these be preheated via app? Really appreciate any recommendations 🙏🏻 Also, on motorway, at around 110kmph , winter or summer… how often do one charge?

    @@AzizIzgin I bought mine just at the end of August 2021, 2 years old with about 8000km. It was a car used by the car dealer and had a price of 24k€ - winter tires were another 1000€. My mother and siblings live about 500km away, so a single trip during winter time now takes almost 6 hrs (incl 3x charging at 190-200Wh/km). I am looking forward to the summer season: It should be much more convenient as I can assume that I may need about 20-30Wh/km less, i.e. 14kWh. That really makes a difference: I can then select a charging point which may be 30km farther away than in the winter season.

    By not going to Löddeköpinge you replace a stretch of 120 km/h motorway with 110 km/h (and 90 km/h closer to Oslo). Could that have an impact on time, if this is the new route?

  • @bjornnyland

    @bjornnyland

    4 жыл бұрын

    Helsingborg - Löddeköpinge has 110 km/h zone. It ended before Ängelholm. Helsingborg - Löddeköpinge - Helsingborg is about 65 km. But the stretch north of Rygge has 100-110 zone for 36 km. Then 90 zone for about 10 km before it hits 80 zone. The difference in time is just 3-4 minutes. But because of lower speed, the energy consumption is also lower and less charging is needed. The real difference is therefore just 2-3 minutes. Not significant at all since the slow 80 zone is so short.

    @@bjornnyland My bad, thought it was 120 km/h past Helsingborg. But ok, seems like you have taken these factors into consideration then (unsurprisingly). I guess you have a point in that the slower last stretch enables you to make a slightly quicker final charging session. That can probably compensate somewhat for the lower speed limit on the final leg. Thanks for your hard work! 👍🏻

    Wow thanks a lot for your extreme test Björn - ok, so the ioniq and the zoe can do 1'000 km in roughly in the same time, but I guess if you would repeat this test in 5 years using cars with 120k km on the distance counter you will get a very different result - ioniq will do it probably in the same time again but Zoe won't - that's why the BMS of ioniq is behaving so cautious. Fürther when the ioniq charges with 35 kW any other car needs to charge at least with 43 kW (20% more) in order to beat his charge speed in terms of (range / time) ratio. Cheers Ingo
