Hypochondriasis UNLEASHED: How Health Anxiety is Triggered | Dr. Rami Nader

In health anxiety or hypochondriasis, a person usually has a number of factors that predispose them to developing health anxiety. Things like negative past experiences with health, leading to inflexible or inaccurate health rules or assumptions that predispose a person to develop health anxiety or hypochondriasis. This predisposition to health anxiety or hypochondriasis lays dormant in a person until their health anxiety gets triggered. There are two main types of health anxiety triggers: internal triggers, things like noticing a change in heart rate, ringing in your ears, stomach distress, fluctuations in energy level; and external triggers, things like hearing about someone who is been diagnosed with a serious illness, news stories about various diseases, having an upcoming medical appointment. Internal and external triggers can work together to ignite the underlying, dormant hypochondriasis, resulting in a massive increase in worry and anxiety about health. This is how health anxiety or hypochondriasis gets triggered. Future videos will explore factors that maintain high levels of hypochondriasis and worries about health.

My problem is pain all over my body, especially my leg muscles. It started with anxiety attacks... but got worse after some sleep deprivation. Now its been 5 or 6 weeks of daily pain. Doctors had previously given ne a very thorough vheck up. So, I believe its anxiety as many of them suggested. I'm praying and trying to relax.

Its anxiety, and our brains "learn" to make the symptoms stick around or even get worse until we unlearn this BS story. These things happen, but we are fine. Hope you are doing well with relaxing.

Hello from Sweden and thanks for making these videos. I’ve had it difficult since the pandemic. But managed to get up and running again for a while. Last September I got tinnitus and after that my anxiety has been spiraling. After 5months waiting I’m going to see a specialist this Thursday. Hope is high, but scared that they won’t be able to help me.

I'm no doctor, but after a few years ALS would be impossible to miss and you should know for sure if you have it or not. It's so unlikely!

I wish there would be a health anxiety professional accepting online counseling for people around the world whom have extremely limited or nil access to this type of therapy.

I feel that dr Nader contributes a lot to people who suffer from mental illnesses. It is for them of great value to understand his professional vision of so many topics. And by doing this also he might offer a tool for adressing their problems. Understanding and recognising these items are really very valuable. thank you very much!

Pero, look up acceptance and commitment psychology. When your thoughts are racing, try to take a break and focus on something in your surroundings. Like a pattern on the wall, try to really focus on how that pattern looks, what’s it made of? How do you think the pattern feels if it has texture? Close your eyes and try to see the pattern, play with your thought. How was it made ? Does it have a smell ? Are there any other pattern you can see? Any colorful flower? Anyways look it up, it can be really helpful to try and get back to the “now”
