Hypercar Crash Test In-Depth Analysis | Mondays with Mate 14

Ғылым және технология

In this Mondays with Mate episode, we go in-depth on passive safety in Rimac C_Two and explain the crash testing program we're going through to develop a globally-homologated hypercar for the roads worldwide. Learn more about this complex topic from our guest on the episode - Gustavo Andrade, CAE Manager.
Suggest the next Mondays with Mate topic to win a part of the crashed car!
We decided to give away parts of the crashed cars to fans who asked the questions we answered in this episode! In addition to that, we have another part for the author of the comment we choose for the next episode. So drop us a question in the comments for a chance to win a keepsake for your man cave!
After years of simulation, the crash testing program started in 2019, first on the material and component level. An initial series of physical crash tests on a full vehicle level was also completed last year. Each element of the car had been designed by the team in Croatia to maximize the amount of energy absorbed by the crash structure and not by the cabin or carbon tub. This latest full-vehicle physical testing - necessary to finalize the carbon composite's behavior during an impact - is a confirmation of the virtual modeling.

Huge props Mate, Gustavo and media team, this is tremendous content. Mate is doing what Elon never could, Mate is like the anti autist. Make technology accessible to outsiders, presenting a lot of things others would keep a secret. I love that you're donating crashed materials to the University of Zagreb. They can share all this stuff which the fans can appreciate because the real devils are in the millions of details only engineers of that expertise level can fathom. Also they can give out these videos without revealing any secrets of the patented proprietary tech they develop. The crash tests are industry standard. And at that level it is actually better to design and test your own car than try to copy another. Lesser mortals aren't going to even try anything like this.

Hello, you will probably never remember me but we met at the 2016 Nikola Tesla Rally, it was the first time I saw your car in person, it was amazing to see a beast of that caliber at that time almost unknown and see everything you have grown up. It was not very difficult to know the successful path that awaited you, you had all the pieces to achieve it and I would like to congratulate you for being an example. It is a pleasure to see your videos as it was a pleasure to share a few moments a few years ago, I remember that blue and gray car, you were almost a child with your new stroller. And the question that I would like to ask you is, who do you think is your greatest inspiration? I don't mean for cars, but to continue with your goals

It is so refreshing to watch an European car company that is driven by real engineering and not just marketing. Nothing shows this more than a founder asking how his car would look after a 300 km/h crash. A company only trying to sell a fast car would never dare to ask this question publicly. Keep up this great spirit!

For next Mondays with Mate I have 4 questions: 1. While obviously most owners of the C_2 will go for custom paints, interior colours and trim options, what options do you offer from "factory"? 2. How does track testing work? Do you make adjustments directly in pit lane or do you transport the car Grobnik - Sveta Nedelja all the time to make adjustements, and do engineers receive data to HQ or do they come to the track to personally see and explain what modifications and fine tuning needs to be done? 3. This one is a bit weird, but I am interested in the wiring and the computers on the vehicle (processors, data storage systems and maybe even GPU's on the vehicle). Do you cooperate with companies like Nvidia or Samsung for designing computers around the car, and do you cooperate with other companies for coding all the safety systems and other things like the user interfaces for the multimedia? 4. You said multiple times this car creates gigabytes and gigabytes of data every 100KM, so will that data be sent from clients' vehicles to HQ to see what could be improved and to create over the air updates? Cijela Hrvatska je ponosna na vas. Pozdrav svima!

Questions: Now that you are amassing so much intimate knowledge of carbon fiber and homologation, will you be able to do it quicker next time around? Will you be able to make a more affordable car with similar capabilities from a weight and safety perspective? Are you looking to offer this expertise to large brands? Do you see a role for such advanced materials in mass produced cars that normal people can afford, of maybe Corvette like cars, competitively priced VS steel structures? The BMW i3 seems to have done something special. But is that renewable? How recyclable are such materials?

Like another rims or some coilovers or maybe some power upgrades? - Whats the weight of the Rimac? And without the battery? - How much torque can the body take? It is really amazing that you guys using the real battery. As far as I know, the battery is an important part of the structure. It also contributes a large part of the vehicle weight. Without the real battery structure, the result will be different for sure. Other important questions are ... 1. Will the crash test tells you guys about where the high voltage cables or high voltage components should be avoided to install? 2. In a real situation, will battery system open contactor or start disconnecting to other systems once the crash is detected by shock sensor?

As you mentioned you are opening a big doors for knowledge to young people who might be interested in those areas of engineering world. Also, with some professors and students those models and other parts of car could be maybe upgraded. At the end, i would like to say that its the best thing you could do. How much additive manufacturing do you use for the final production parts on the car? Do you mostly use them for prototyping, and then switch to injection molding, or do you actually stick with 3D printed parts? I'm assuming most of what you use is selective laser sintering or multi-jet fusion, it would be really interesting to hear how parts produced with those technologies behave in the real world compared to injection molded parts. I have some experience with carbon fiber and glass reinforced polyamide parts produced using SLS technology, and they seem to be extremely durable and more than capable to be parts of consumer products, but I wonder if they can replace parts produced with traditional methods for actual functional mechanical parts on cars, especially in demanding situations? Do you have any plans for future investments in some sort of an additive manufacturing center in Croatia that would offer industrial-grade 3D printing services for clients, such as 3DHubs for example, enabling anyone to produce 3D printed parts at professional quality levels at competitive prices? It would be a great thing to have something like that in Croatia, to make our small businesses, innovators and even students rely less on similar services from other countries. Pozdrav! 👋

How significant were the performance upgrades made to the C_Two throughout the development process? (in terms of acceleration it was mentioned that the initial goal was ~2.3s 0-60, but changed with the announcement of the Tesla Roadster). How will the team outperform these stats for future models?

How can you isolate model-specific individual effects in the cars being crashtested? So, how far can you make sure that those in the crashtest and (all) other models sold would have the same crash results? (For this, cars would need to be 100% identically) For a normal study, one would increase the number of obs, but how do you continue here? Thanks a lot for an answer!

First off, amazing car the Rimac team has put together. For my question- Do you guys have any plans to make less powerful, less expensive, 4-seat vehicles that are more affordable to the middle/higher middle class families similar to what Tesla does? I love Rimac and what you guys are doing and would love to own one of your vehicles one day, but I honestly don’t see myself having millions of dollars at my disposal.
