After I killed the boss I was like "Yes... it's done. Now the drifter can live without this cancerous like sickness". After I saw the blood drop while walking and caughing "They can't do this.... he's gonna make it, HE'S GONNA MAKE IT!". I still cry to this day when I see the credits. Beautiful game and an ending of the ages.

oooh maaaan, at the end i was also screaming "c'moooon, you can dooo thiiis", and after defeating the boss "YOU DID IT MAAAN", and after seeing the cinematic, "noooo, you deserve to live! like the other pro guy!"

Same I was trying to pick up the heals on the way out lol. I was like no way was I going to let him die on me. I had the feeling from the start this would be how it end though. Just that dread in the back of my mind. But it literally hurt so badly to see it come true. What a great analogy to the struggles of illness. At least the Dog God? provided him some solace in giving him a peak into the world no longer inflicted. Also the drifters who paved a way especially the pink drifter didn’t die in vein.

In the end, Anubis lied to you. the Cell was never the cause of your sickness, it simply used your sickness to get to you. There was no cure. The dog simply used you to kill the cell and close the door to its realm once more. Once that was done, the only gift it had left was a decent place to die, and a last few moments free of corruption or purpose. Congratulations drifter, you saved the world.

How I look at it -- Anubis chose you, as well as the Pink Drifter (rip) to defeat Judgement, but since Judgement had taken control of most of Anubis' power it was able to see who Anubis had chosen to defeat it, and afflicted them with the disease with the intention of killing them before they could kill it or disabling them from being physically capable of killing it.

- Since when did the jackal tell the Drifter destroying the cell would cure him? - Pretty sure the Immortal Cell does cause the disease. Whenever Judgement shows up the Drifter coughs and after destroying the Cell he’s so sick he’s about to die.

you know maybe it did heal him from sickness, but at the same time he got severe wounds that he wouldn't even make it to above And for at his last time, the Drifter is given a peaceful death having to be given the vision of the world he saved

If there's HLD 2, we should find an Easter egg where we find the Drifter corpse and pay respect

I don't believe he died. I can't believe he died. He is our Drifter and he saved this world. I want to believe he is alive and sick or injured at the end and he stares at the blue sea of the world he saved.

i mean in my personal interpretation of the story/themes it makes sense for him to die, since i saw it as about accepting death (esp with alx preston's disease)

The piano coming in at the end just crushes me... also, does his final resting place seem familiar? Watch the beginning again!

I just finished hld last night, and that ending pretty much tore my heart right out of my chest. Its rare that a game actually makes me cry lol.. amazing how something with no written words or dialogue can tell such a beautifully tragic story. poor drifter. he didn't deserve to die alone, but at least he got to see the world he helped save before his death.

+Sonwig Now I keep thinking, just as you were exploring, finding the keys in skeletons (former drifters?)on each area, maybe the time will come when a new drifter will come to the place you stay at the end and find some keys or a weapon on your skeleton... That thought crushes me :(

This is seriously one of the coolest boss fights I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

This with the context of the game’s developer is truly heart breaking, for context the game’s developer suffers from a heart disease that is guaranteed to kill him eventually this game is his work of art depicting his struggles with it. No matter how much strife and adversity the drifter overcomes he will not survive it’s probably how the developer feels and man that hits hard

I think it's more a story of embracing death rather than trying to run from it. These people were given immortality but in return it messed with the balance of their world. In the end, it had to be restored.

and playing the game with this setting in mind adds new dimension to it. Whatever that might be, for you, individually...

My game glitched, when he sit at the fire and it goes black for a second, my screen stayed black. The music kept playing though...i just had to sit there with my feelings and this song. Amazing, honestly.

Do you know of the story of the creator of the game? Makes it all the more meaningful to see yourself getting there at the End Boss, and trying to picture his (the game creator) own frame of mind, as he struggled to write and design this game, and then publish it out in the open for the world to see. Makes me think of my own story, and my own hurts which I ought to face - it's really f**king inspiring, really - because you KNOW he must have been in such a frail condition throught his growing-up years (outcasts in high-school can relate) and yet here it is, the game, for the whole wide world, and the story behind it available online for anyone willing to search to read and understand. Just... Picture the going through with it. Not physical pain of any sort, screw that - or even shame or fear... But that ache, deep in the soul - the heart, literally. ...did you, reading this, ever feel out of place?... This guy's my hero, and not in a glorified manner... Which makes me humble. I loved this game, the gameplay is masterfully done and it's so freakingly well polished, it's ages and ages ahead of any "triple A" game out there. Maybe compare an artisan's Katana with a premium-tier gunner weaponry from the modern world, if that's worth to frame my feelings regarding the polishing of this game's mechanics...

IM NOT GONNA WATCH THE REST I ONLY NEEDED A BIT OF HELP WITH THE FNAL BOSS I HOPE EVERYONE IS OKAY

I come back to this video to remember the sadness I felt when beating this game, it is one of the few games I’ve played in which I nearly cried

You really made this boss fight look easy--like, "why didn't I do that?" easy. I stuck with the railgun and just kept running around in circles getting hit everywhere like a scrub lol. It took me several tries, but I finally nabbed him in a photo finish: I had two railgun shots to Judgement's four hitpoints. I had one hitpoint left, all three health packs were gone. I waited for him to reappear and I unloaded both shots into his face like three frames before the AOE move would've killed me. That was fun. Can't get over the ending. Panacea has been stuck in my head for the last two days. I planned on doing NG+ right after the final boss fight but that might have to wait a little.

renoZoN shotgun is the most powerful gun in the game in my opinion. At point blank it one-shots almost everything. The strat dodge enemy attack, shift to enemy, shoot, slice works wonders on everything in the game.

Drifters, to our knowledge are without names. Maybe his name was like LXI-26 or some shit like that XD. My point is; he's an AI, he probably didn't have a name or anything of the sort. BESIDES not all cool heroes need names XD.

His name is not necessarily the Magician, that is his tarot name. He is generally called the Drifter, but since there is almost no written or spoken language in the game, almost nothing has canon names.

Thank you. I've beaten Judgement several times now and my game always crashes right after the Drifter sits down so I've never seen past that part. What a beautiful ending. Do you know if there's a different cutscene at the end of New Game + ?

Just having the shotgun, the invincible dash, and the sword that reflects projectiles is enough to completely melt this guy. So much hype, so little effort.

I'd say for The Drifter..... Late teens/ Young adult 17-24 And for The Pink Drifter.... 34-40 But those are guesses of mine! Just tossing them in the air, y'know? 😶

The dog is likely the Diety which the main bad guy, that diamond that spews the pink liquid and creates the shadow, siphons power from. The dog is actually fine, and reborn, now that his chosen drifter was able to fulfill his task ( a task many drifters tried to fulfill but failed).

Dog is basically a version of the egyption god of the underworld/embalming ANUBIS.

Is it just me or does this game’s story seem like Dark Souls’ story? Your character actually just wants to die but they keep on respawning so they try to snuff out the flame of revival. I still think it’s weird but that theorem makes the most sense to me.

It’s quite the opposite. The Drifter wishes to cure his illness and believes destroying the cause of it may cure him.

He destroys the corruption of his fear of death, represented by the final boss. Doing so doesn't save his life, but it lets him die in peace, with the vision of a serene ocean and a beautiful sunrise.
