The floating raft was my first take-off point for hanging root pouches. There are so many variations for hydroponics and imho, there is no wrong way to try something new. I think the first objective is to grow tasty stuff. The second objective is to share experiences. The third objective is build on the shoulders of those that share and then re-share. Looking really good Brent. I better get going on mine. I don"t have the flooding to worry about that you have there. Wow I guess I can be grateful for that. I am going to be doing something quite similar to yours but I will be using fish water and I am thinking of using a combination floating raft and a fill and drain with a suspended raft. Whatever you would call that...I don't know. Good luck, hope you get way too many veggies to handle. Ed

Nice build, I think it will work fine, my only concern is the support for the polystyrene, when you get some of the heavier veg in there. I think you might have to tweek your support system, there is going to be a lot of weight in the middle. I guess that is an advantage of the raft style, the water is the support but even that system needs the same size plants, of the same weight, to keep the raft level. I look forward to following the progress. Great job Brent.

All part of the learning experience. Like you said, though, it can be tweaked later if needed!

I'd say it's a self replenishing Kratky bed, with air stones. I wouldn't waste my time with the air stones, since it will be suspended above the nutrient mix anyway. the plants will get plenty of oxygen, as long as the net cup is no more than 1/4" into the water. I think you will like it! You've seen what I have done with Kratky. I don't know of anything that I have not been able to grow in that system, and it's soooo easy! The nice thing about the recirculation is that you can continually change out plants after a harvest, and don't have to worry about stagnation, or cleaning in between, vs the way I do it. Just grab out the extra roots, and keep on truckin!

Damn son, I thought you were gone! Where's the vids? Not much of a regular salad eater actually. Two or three a week. Enjoy plain lettuce, tomato, and cucumber salads. I've supported it so well because I want to grow more cabbage, broccoli, celery, and other stuff like that.

It was fun to build.

The OSB didn't work out well for me Brent. The humidity in the greenhouse caused it to delaminate. It began to break down after 2 or 3 months. I changed over to #2 plywood and so far it is doing pretty good.

You are so beautiful...to me! Ha, Hi Brent. Another fantastic video!!! 3" net cups? And you happened to find craft sponges that fit the cups exactly? Dude, you rock! And craft sponges...brilliant! Love love love the set up. May I suggest a cube shape for the center support, so it wont fall over. I just started some seeds here in Colo. yesterday. Snow Peas, Jalapeños, Cucumbers (sml bush) and a boat load of lettuce. And 72 flowers, 4 kinds. I have two trays sitting outside inside of two 3' (under bed storage kind)making a make shift greenhouse (tiny space style). Then I'm going to use those 3' containers for "Self watering pop bottle grow boxes" for my lettuce. Waiting for my ship to come in. So let me know if you see it floating around in your "Summer Greenhouse". :)

It is hard to pass a mirror! : O) Yes, 3" net cups. It's what I started with a long time ago and I have so many and the hole saw. Otherwise, I might do 2" cups. I think I will do a more robust center support in the future. I just didn't have the extra PVC pieces for it at build time. Great advice. With your setup, sounds like you need to break out the video camera and get to tubin'. All the best.

Use 1/2 inch or 1/4 soaker hose you hook it up tomyour air and it bubbles out it use washer to weight it down then you can make custom size air stones

I tend to have a bunch of projects going on at the same time. This build took like a week or a bit longer. I'd work for an hour or two, then some days nothing, then much of the last day before publishing the video. I believe it can be easily done in a weekend.

I do believe my old water bed frames might work for frames. could i use a rubber roofing membrane for liner? very meticilous instruction. thank you

Hey Brent. Nice build! I will attempt to do a RDWC one day as well....curious since you did not sit the foam on the water, did the air pocket affect the temperature of the water or any algae growth from the bottom side of the foam from potential evaporation? How's the condition of the bottomside of the foam after a few months, and any mold? Appreciate your feedback experience.

These no longer exist so there's that. That greenhouse was removed. For the time it was up, there were no issues. No algae and bottom of foam was pristine.

Nice system. But, I would like some info on your strawberry plants. How do you revive them from the fridge?

Some thoughts on strawberry plants. I've had the overwinter fridge success with the variety "Chandler." I've not been able to revive them longer than 2.5 months and that longer period I attempted with "Ozark Beauty" so it might be the variety or it might be the length of time. I could probably figure it out if I put my mind to it. If you put in crisper, keep right at freezing, say 32 to 40F as a guess and keep moist. Keep an amount of ever slight nutrient value water in the crisper so it's the same temp. Use this water to rinse and re-wet the strawberry plants once a week or more. All I did was pour a cup in the strawberry containers and shake slightly to coat everything and re-wet. This removes older, nasty water, and refreshes and moistens all the plants. Empty water that collects on the bottom of the container. Sounds like a pain, but it is really super simple. Once you put the plants in soil and a warmer environment, they react and start growing. Hope that helps.

Coming in late by a good number of years my question is the foam that you’re using to put the net pads nut cups in is that food rated because there are some forms and products that one put in water can leach out the chemicals within the phone causing poisonous chemicals in the water as well as your plants would absorb as well could you let me and others know unless somebody’s already asked the same question greatly appreciate it thank you

From my book 4 years ago: Toxicity occurs in everything, everywhere, and in differing degrees. For simplicity, let’s call it all “harmfuls” regardless of how much they can actually harm us. Harmfuls can be plastics, metals, foams, liquids, or any interaction of any of them with anything else creating a gas or by-product. My list of harmfuls is understated to say the least. I believe each individual has the right, and responsibility, to learn all they can on factors affecting them and their family. I certainly am no expert in any sense whatsoever. If you’re subscribed to me on KZread, and watch just one or two of my videos, you know. :O) I think we all do a pretty darn good job with questionable issues and filtering out the unimportant stuff. In our filtering, we each come to our own conclusions, thoughts, and opinions on the impact of harmfuls, and what we’re willing to live with or what we cannot live with. We further grow those thoughts or opinions as life goes on. We know we live globally-saturated with perceived and actual harmfuls. Most harmfuls have had phenomenal plusses for society and yet they’re still a huge issue for our planet’s health and future as they eventually become a waste. Where do we draw the line? Really, about all you can do is draw your own lines. I’m in the middle with how I regard harmfuls, but I certainly understand and respect how each individual feels on the subject. I know I will likely reference something in the book you feel is not for you and I’ll likely offend someone, somehow, but I honestly cannot do what I do, share what I share, or write what I write, without harmfuls in some form. If you take offense, please use the offensive part as a guide to try something else. I’m sorry, no refunds. :O) I want to be serious, for a second here, and I cannot stress this enough: I cannot take your personal responsibility away from you. You should never surrender it and you must always do your own due diligence before making decisions. I’m not being nasty. It’s such a gift and a wonderful part of having freedoms. Let me share a little on some of what I’m talking about concerning harmfuls so you can consider how you feel about it and make adjustments as you see fit. Plastics & Foams. The toxicity of plastic, especially with leaching, is one of the most common comment-related concerns on my KZread channel. The type of plastic, what chemicals make up the plastic, how the plastic is fabricated, leaching of plastic, how temperatures affect plastic, and the deterioration of plastic is a small fraction of concerns related to plastics and foams. I try and use what is considered food-grade, non-hazardous, or health-certified options, from a reputable source, where I can. But, after research, I still use, and am ok with some controversial plastics like PVC. I think of foams similar to plastics. They’re probably manufactured from many of the same chemicals and I’m not smart enough to know the difference. I do know the Dow foam, I use, is labeled as “non hazardous”. If you dabble even a little bit in hydroponics, you’ll see all manner of foam and plastic-related uses. In fact, it’s everywhere, not just in hydroponics. Find your plastic happy place. Plant Absorption. On the subject of micros and harmfuls, it is certainly worth talking about plant reactions to harmfuls because they’re what you’re eating. I mean, most of you likely don’t care if you touch plastic or foam, but do likely care if you ingest harmfuls absorbed by your plants. I’ve done research into plant absorption of various harmfuls. I suggest you do it as well. Plants have a great ability to filter out most harmfuls. In fact, plants use and need elements like metals and even chemicals like chlorine. Did you know that? And, so do we. I believe choosing the safest harmfuls, coupled with a plant’s ability to filter them out, is a great combination to assure us. Ultimately, you do you! Research and find your plant-absorption happy place.

Going to look for it now. Any regrets of the way you built it? Too shallow? Im wanting to go that shallow also due to water shortage at my well. I’m building mine tomorrow on your design so I hope you can get back to me soon. Any chance we could talk on the phone? I’m going on pretty big scale 30/40 ft greenhouse.

@@larrymarcum1673 The depth I used was based off of deck boards and it worked very well. I'd keep the depth. The plastic could use an upgrade to maybe a pond liner or perhaps greenhouse 6 mil. You can email me for back and forth: c3voyage@gmail.com

here is a tip, if you use a magnetic drive guide, you may already have one. they have different lengths. you put the right torx bit in it, then the screw, then slide the metal guide out to just when the tip of the screw points out. this will hold the screw inplace while you screw the deck screws into the wood. no pre-drill is needed. www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-1-4-in-Hex-Magnetic-Drive-Guide-DW2054/202248363

Yes, sort of. DWC is a form of water culture that's not really defined as to what is "deep." In the older days, it was called water culture or solution culture regardless of depth. It doesn't matter really what someone calls in my book.

very nice video! just wondering is there no nutrient reservoir? if there is not, does the drained water goes directly back into the growing beds and it keeps circulating? Do you use water pumps to keep the water circulating? If you do do you keep the pumps on the whole time? And do you ever completely change the water every so often? Also noticed your net pots were quite far apart, what did you end up growing?

Yes, there is a reservoir it drains too which was automatically adjusted for ppm by concentrated nutes and topped with gravity fed water. Water pumps on a timer were used. During that period, I didn't change out the nutrient. Only topped up. Now, in my grow tubes, I may change it once every month or two. In this setup, I mostly grew broccoli and cabbage and the net pot distance was appreciated.

I don't auto-control it, but there are options out there for sure.

You just can't help yourself. Just like me you watch too many videos. I'd say you have a DWC but airstones are a good idea since there won't be that much air space between the water and foam. As for the center support running PVC down the center with 4 legs and attach it at each end would probably have been sufficient. I believe hydropnic growing whether raft, NFT, FAWN, or dutch buckets is a more controllable way to go because there's less guesswork in the available nutrients. Your videos are always interesting.

You bet. The return line isn't glued. Pops right off and will let me drain it. That was part of the design.
