Dang. And here was I ever since my first chemistry class in high school thinking that the ring was to keep the hydrometer from breaking if it tipped over. lol Good work, Brian. I learned something new today.

I really like these short how to videos. That blue collar has another function. If you accidentally sideswipe the (glass) hydrometer cylinder and knock it over, it won't break.
Awesome video Brian! I've been brewing for 20+ years and never bothered figuring out what the blue ring was for. Now I know. As for those Brewing America hydrometers, I highly recommend them. I dropped mine and the only thing that broke was the base and I was able to MacGyver a fix for that and am still using it.
Great job love the educational stuff for sure!!

Thanks for sharing this video. I didn't know or I didn't read that you have to calibrate a hydrometer. I've done it for my refractometer but never for my hydrometer. Great lesson that I just learned from watching your video. Cheers!

Nice!! Yeah you should check.it and if it's off document how much and add or subtract from the reading going forward.
Great stuff! I never knew what that ring was for seems so obvious now!

Haha nice!! A bonus of it is that it protects the flask if you knock it over! 👍🍻

There’s been a few times I forgot to take a FG before carbing up and I usually have to take a sample and let it sit on the counter for half a day to get an accurate reading. But that coffee filter trick is a good one!

Hi Brian, your videos are very informative! Would like to see a video on how to read brew recipes for beginners! I’ve researched and still find dry hopping confusing. (e.g. when to dry hop with respect to fermentation)

Awesome video! I know I'm a few months late but any suggestions for someone who does small batches (1~2 gallons) I feel like I'm wasting a lot to pull a hydrometer reading. Should I just be switching to a refractometer or digital? Or can/should I just add the used wort/beer back in? PS loved your small batch video definitely gives me ideas once I'm ready to switch to all grain!
Original Gravity - Final Gravity x 131.25 = ABV Also, shake the sample to remove the CO2.
The basics are the key to any venture. Great video.

That little area where the water touches the hydrometer, and bends upward a little bit is called the meniscus. It's a Google it, it explains the phenomena. And you're exactly right, any dissolved gas in solution, CO2 or otherwise, will mess with your final specific gravity reading. I usually have to stir a sample a little bit which helps liberate the CO2 that is in the sample.

it's because water is very sticky on a molecular level. it is one of the few compounds that both has high adhesion as well as cohesion.

As far as temp goes..do we have to take the OG once the wort cools all the way down ..pitching temp vs fermentation temps etc

The sample should be as close to 60f as possible if it's not an adjustment will have to be calculated. No mater when you take the sample. 👍🍻
i always thought the ring was so that the cylinder wouldn't break if it got knocked over!

That was my understanding too. I always let the tube run over and I blow the foam off the top while it’s happening. Mine doesn’t have a ring so I’ll break it soon.
