I suggest wetting the perlite before putting it into the final germination bag. That way you avoid putting in too much water.

I just want to say thank you for demonstrating this method. I’m in college and I have been working with my own hybridizing of dayllies at home for fun. I always had trouble germinating seeds until a few months ago. This method has worked 90% of the time with almost 200 seeds!! Again, thank you for helping me start my Daylily farm!!! 🙏🏻

isn't it neat to learn something that helps you! I am thankful that you shared this with me. It took years of frustration and money! i would buy some really cool daylily crossed seeds and they would end up rotting out. Keep me posted on how your farm is working out. I feel like I need to reply to everyone, but trust me that this is one of the best methods there is because it lowers the chance of mold/fungus/rotting/drowning/sufficating from killing your seed sprout compared to using methods such as a cup of water or a paper towel which the root can also grow into the paper towel and removing it can break/stress the root tip.

Thanks for your video. Suggestion: Do your seeds as you suggested. let them sprout and take pictures. When you have the pot planted take pictures. When you make your video show the process and then the pictures of the results. Much more effective!

I used this method but with the paper towels and it took literally 24 hours for the seeds to sprout, I used melon seeds that I thought were dead, I got 100% germination.

Its germination how specific does he really need to be..

I may have to give this a shot. All my cucumber seeds failed this year using the paper-towel method. All rotted before germinating. I like the idea of H.P. bit of a disinfectant that i didn't think of.

Just wanted to let you know I tried your method with a few seed varieties, and I'm encouraged! I've got a bunch of impatiens, a bunch of coleus, and hopefully, the petunias I did will survive. They look very fragile! Thanks so much, I feel "empowered" to plant anything now! lol

Instead of a water bottle. Try a spray bottle give you more control over watering the perlite.

"Benefits of Hydrogen Peroxide" - Then proceeds not to explain those benefits.. LoL. Peroxide mix 1L water to 100ml 3% peroxide. It eliminates root rot on plants that have root problems, and cleans the seeds with bacterial mould that could be attached to the seeds. This is also great in spraying vegetables that are in close confinement such as microgreens to prevent mould while growing, and into harvest.

I wrapped a couple of store bought string bean seeds into a wet paper towel put them in a baggie and they grew roots in no time at all, than I planted them into a pot for about 2 weeks, from there I planted them into the ground they grew just fine, no chemicals at all.

a nother thing you can do is get a dyper yes a dyper and cut it open and shake out the power on paper then add some of that to it the powder is what absorbs water its a silica powder safe to use and this will help keep things wet and prevent from over watering it also helps speed up the process.

I tried this with bird seed and did not grow any birds. Disliked

It was probably baked seed that is done to prevent it growing. And people like you can grow whatever just know some bird seed varieties contain thistle seed. which is a noxious weed. And if it has sunflower seeds hope you love around 10 foot tall flowers. Cause many sunflower varieties can grow up to 10 foot tall

Neighbor gave me volunteer tomato plant. I put it in the crappiest soil I had, in a small pot (1 gallon) because no one believed it would grow and produce. I then kissed it, loved it, and talked with it every day. I caressed the branches and leaves (I barely had knowledge how to care for it). It shot up like a weed, grew to 4 feet in no time and grew strong. It started blooming. No bees to pollinate. So I shook branches every day to self pollinate. It started producing fruit - 18 to be exact (15 that were medium size). It had many more blooms. Yet it was in small pot so I decided not to pollinate those. I caressed the tomatoes. My neighbors were in shock - I hardly know gardening, yet their store bought plants did not make. The friend/neighbor who had given me volunteer plant, still had not any tomatoes from her plants. She gave me two more volunteers. However, my giant mother plant had a main branch Break off from storm. I kissed the bobo, taped up the tear and placed that large daughter branch into a tall thin glass vase, in kitchen window, where it could see it's mama. It was as tall as window and just as wide. My husband laughed. I kissed it, loved it and talked with it. It soon began to root like crazy. Other people said it could not be done. So I planted it in 5 gal pot with crappy soil (crawfish mound soil, rotted leaves, half-rotted bananas peals, etc.). I kissed it and loved it. Now all I will do is wait 💁🏼

You can colect rain water , it works as well , and its for free. At the end of the day , nature wil do its own selection.

I already use a chamomile tea solution which has worked well for me in fast germination and getting old seeds to sprout. Do have the occasional issue with mold, though, so i think I will try adding a bit of peroxide to my chamomile tea solution. I also really like the perlite idea: you don't have to fuss with trying to wrestle roots from a paper towel. I also think I'll add a few water retention crystals to cut down on worry about too much or too little watering. Thanks for the vid! Thumbs up & subbed.

cinnamon powder is a lot better than chamomille tea to keep the mold away.

In answer to putting seeds outdoors; we live in frozen state til June; we have to start seeds indoors or buy plants due to a short growing season. Not everybody lives in Oregon.

Some seeds need to be put in freezer like poppy . Perlite keeps it from getting too wet. Temp is most over looked aspect , look up germination temp for each seed you want to germinate

+First Class Gardens The mystery seed germinated fine and I've put them in soil. The others are still in bags but they're smaller seeds (and older in one case) and maybe not the best for this method.

People want to see them growing too, and most of the videos on youtube dont show this process :-(

i sprout me seeds by putting cups of top top soil start about march (im in zone 7.5 south carolina small in the bottom to drain i have a rolling cart so i can take out side weather perm. for about 1 hr a day once you see little green coming up you know is working just put about 2 inchs soil to start as they star adding spoon fulls of soil do this till it reaches top of cup this way they dont get leggy and fall over 3-4 weeksthey start growing faster i can plant 1st week april this works for tom. every thing else i just place in soil keep damp and watch it grow (okra and several type beans cucks and zucinnie

Is it Perlite that is dangerous to breathe in rather dust as you use it? It’s similarly harmful as asbestos, I believe I was advised at a large gardening store. (Armstrong’s.)

what's wrong with putting it between layers of a moist paper towel? Same result only in two days instated of 4.

OnKei Wong certain things like daylilies like perlite, paper towel works great too! but its the solution which creates better germination percentage...especially on hard to germinate seeds

If you check them every day the roots will not grow into the paper towel. If they do you tear the paper towel and plant it along with the paper towel.

Okay, got the tiny, two reddiesh start-of-something growing from seeds in bags on cotton. Help. What did you mean to say when you said "You don't want to transplant these.. at 4:00? If they are flowers, how long do you let the sprouts grow before you transplant them? Can they get stuck in the cotton and be difficult to transplant? How can you tell if the sprout is a root or a stem in order to choose downward or upward in the soil? Thank you. 

This just gave me an idea. I was going to throw into recycling a bunch of those easter egg shells and was thinking, they might actually be handy if I put perlite into them and used them to germinate my seeds.

that would guarantee them to grow. You can try a few without putting them through a cold period. For best results keep them in the fridge for a few weeks.

+Gladys Foster for "hard" seeds, i'd normally scarify ie scratch them against a rough surface first, then dump them in some potting soil or put them in a sandwich bag on a damp paper towel. works all the time

Hi, Today is May 18, getting a late start with sunflower seeds due to late frost. I'm told to sow the seed directly, not transplant or germinate sunflowers. Can't I soak them overnight? It's getting late in the season. I subscribe to your channel and had great results with all my other flowers, except I over watered my seedlings and lost some. Thanks for the great tips!

Recommend using a...strainer--as per wetting the seed growing "medium"--as would allow itself being WELL DRAINED prior towards installation into the plastic bag, afterwards, right?

Great for getting seeds to germinate, but I can't get them to survive after transplanting into small pots on the way to bigger pots

What about seeds that need scarification in order to sprout? Can you skip this part with this method or do you still need to scarify?

Not all hydrogen peroxide bottles are the same. How much would you say that cap contains? About a teaspoon?

I don't notice blueberry seeds when I eat them. I have never bit into a blueberry and noticed seeds?

+Caroline Jamieson if your seeds have not gone through cold stratification (4 weeks in the fridge) then you will have to do that first. After that I would use the paper towel on both of those seeds with the hydrogen peroxide solution. The reason for paper towel is because the seeds are so small.

I do have a question for you. I have Lily SEEDS not bulbs that are EXTREMELY small. INSTEAD OF PERILITE can I use a paper towel instead? (i don't have a big enough pot for 500 seeds to randomly start sprouting so I'm hoping to see germination before planting). that being said also, can I use a seedling starter peat moss mixture with the same results?

yes and possibly. Yes to paper towel and No - possibly on the peat pots. Over the past 20 years peat pots have been known to cause rot on a lot of plants we grow. This is due to a constant wet setting with not enough drainage. Some things really like those conditions while others will rot out. Grasses and Annuals really like the peat. I always test a sample first...so take about 10 seeds to try first then when you know, dive all in. Just be cautious what can happen with the peat pots. If they are Daylily seeds Dont Use the Peat Pots, they will rot out.

+Svetla Nikolova The thing that perlite does is mend together when it gets wet, taking the place of soil. This may sound weird but it holds the seed and mimics the ground. You could try small pebbles or aquarium rock. The smallest grade you can find. Because the key is to remove the seed when it sprouts. Perlite makes this very easy.

What is the advantage of doing your procedure, when seeds should typically germinate in 3-7 days in a normal perlite/moss environment...and unlike your process, the then sprouted seeds do not have to be repositioned into some soil medium...since they already are! I admit that I did this with orange tree seeds placed within a wet paper towel, in a zip lock in the window during winter, and now have moved the sprouted little seeds into starter soil into my green house. It does work, just not sure the advantage?

+Jon Canter short answer- increasing germination percentage and at a a faster rate. Not sure what kind of seeds you refer too as you make a general comment? 3-7 days for grass seed would be the norm but when you are talking daylily, bamboo, cherry...etc. and I can go on, 3-7 days is very unlikely. For a few years (about 15 years ago) we were paying 15.00 to 25.00 on avg. for 6/7 seeds of the newest daylily crosses, straight from the hybridizers...planting them directly into perlite/moss as you say, or even regular potting soil...would cause a lot of them to rot out. So after experimenting and doing a little research we gave this method a shot. By starting seeds this way it increased our germination percentages into the mid 90% range. Typically, lets talk daylily seeds, we get sprouts in 2-3 days by doing it this way. I understand your skepticism but as a world wide seed vendor and grower of many plants for 20 years now...this method has really helped us. Not saying it will work exactly the same with everything, we just wanted to share with everyone what works best for us. Really, this video was inspired from and for all the people who gave us negative feedback on sites like Amazon and Ebay, who couldn't get their seeds to grow. Perfectly viable seeds and many could not figure out how to grow them. This was the case on several varieties that we were selling. Thanks for the question! It really took me back and glad you asked. If you read down through the comments this has helped many people to sprout hard to grow seeds. to be more articulate, I meant that it seems like the time to germinate in a zip lock, then having to delicately place the sprouting's in seed starter, is not any more economic or time saving than just going directly to seed trays. But, yes, it was worth it for my orange tree seeds, as an experiment on starting harder seeds. Thanks for your video.

My apologies if you already know this... but you're not using ROASTED coffee beans, are you? Those are dead. I'm not even sure that the green unroasted beans that some larger specialty shop use aren't already too processed. Coffee plants are notoriously finicky; hence the high prices for coffee.

rzashida I'm trying start my coffee beans too (ordered from Baker Creek) and the stuff I'm reading online says that it takes several months for them to sprout, and that in less than 6 months they are no longer viable. So, tricky stuff. Keep them moist.

+sonali dey you need to find out if the seeds you bought were cold stratified already. If you dont know then 3-4 weeks in your refrigerator will be good. Not the freezer. after that follow my directions in this video. Thanks

Would Vermiculite work also?
