Hyde ParkCorner is between Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Mayfair in London,
England. It primarily refers to a major road junction at the southeastern corner of Hyde Park, that was originally planned by architect Decimus Burton. The junction includes a broad green-space roundabout in its centre, which is now the setting for Burton's triumphal Wellington Arch.
Six streets converge at the junction: Park Lane (from the north), Piccadilly (northeast), Constitution Hill (southeast), Grosvenor Place (south), Grosvenor Crescent (southwest) and Knightsbridge (west). Hyde Park Corner tube station served by the Piccadilly line has many accessways around the junction as do its notable monuments. Immediately to the north of the junction is Burton's Ionic Screen gateway entrance to Hyde Park, and Apsley House, the 18th century townhouse of the 1st Duke of Wellington, hero of Waterloo.
Wellington Arch, originally known as the Green Park Arch, was built in 1825 to honour the victories of the Duke of Wellington during the Napoleonic Wars. Designed by renowned architect Decimus Burton, the arch served as a grand entrance to Buckingham Palace and a symbol of triumph and military excellence. Its commanding presence and neoclassical design make it an architectural marvel in the heart of London. Wellington Arch is situated at the edge of Hyde Park, one of London’s most beloved green spaces.
Buckingham Palace is a royal residence in London and the administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a focal point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and mourning.
The Green Park covers 40 acres, linking St James's Park and Hyde Park in a chain of Royal Parks. In 1660, King Charles II wanted to be able to walk all the way from Hyde Park to St James's Park without leaving royal soil. So, he acquired land between the two established parks, put a brick wall around it and gave The Green Park its first name: Upper St James's Park.
The Green Park is one of the most tranquil of all the Royal Parks.
I hope you enjoy the virtual walk!
