Hybrid or Long Iron? SHOCKING RESULTS!

Спорт

Is your long iron the right club choice for your game?
This #tourtrucktuesday I’m at Aviara Golf Club going through the on course scenarios you should consider when testing a rescue / hybrid club. Not only will I provide the visuals you should look for in ball flight but the Full Swing Kit Launch Monitor is also present to confirm all ball launch data.
Your rescue or long iron choice is an integral part of your game but have you considered, certain chip shots or bunker play to help with the decision.
I put the new TaylorMade Qi10 & Qi10 Tour through a direct comparison with my P770 3 iron and I think the results will actually shock you.
First time hitting the KBS Proto Hybrid shaft as used by Jon Rahm, this was also a surprise feature of the video.

    I used to be 1w - 4w - 7w - 4 rescue. I'm now 1W - 3W - 5W - 4h/4i - forced by manufacturer options. Winter, I love the 4H from softer lies, and hit it great. Summer, the 4i gets used as a driving iron, and I run further off line, so a low one to recover from under trees is great. I can live with one pair of a high stopper vs a lower runner of similar distance - enough elevation changes on my course to be useful. More feels like overkill.

Thanks man great stuff!

    I went for a fitting last night as I need a club between my 3 wood and 4 iron. 5 wood was a no go as it went too high and was almost going as far as my 3 wood and far too much spin, even with the 2 iron and 2 rescue I found them quite spiny but I loved the feel of the tour rescue and think that might be my choice.

    seems relevant! I just bought a hybrid because I can't get on with my long irons! I feel like if you're a heel striker of the ball, irons aren't a bad play, but if you're mainly a toe miss, you really need that gear effect to help not lose accuracy and distance.

He worked with the fitter explaining my game and the types of heads and shafts that would work for me. A fitter at any store doesn’t know your game well enough to be able to fit you properly!

    We all like decent gapping. In my game I carry 2 clubs at 19°, both giving very different results. A Hybrid that gives plenty of height and adequate distance. The old school 2 iron gives me a lower flight, a lot lower but ideal into the wind. Here in the UK where the wind is prominent it has to be the best option. I liked the review very informative but there in California it is an easier option, over in the UK not so much

    personally I don't like seeing all the loft on the 22*, I've tried and gone there before but I didn't this season. Yes it would go shorter but for me I'd add in the 19* push my 4 wood back to a 3 wood and probably jump to a 4i or drop a wedge. As you can see a lot of adjustments required for me to game a rescue hence why "I personally" don't.

  • @trottiegolf

    @trottiegolf

    5 ай бұрын

    The stock shafts are lighter and the lie angles (for me) are 1 degree higher than where I would like them on most of the woods hence why I bend clubs flatter and use stronger shafts. These two factors and the reason TM have gone down a higher MOI route with their products this season indicate that they are focusing towards the higher hcp golfer. My advice would be buy one club in the fw wood core model and see where it takes you. Stay away from the P7MC & P7MB irons and the Qi10LS driver but everything else in the line up you will have great success with. Obv I absolutely recommend a fitting but to have the opinion that the products aren't for your game just isn't the case. Keep in mind a Tour Truck exists as the set ups of these clubs are completely different than what is in production...... with the exception of the models I list that you should avoid. Hope that helps.

    It’s not the degrees that matter, its distance and gapping. In a fitting, have your irons gapped, and work out which hybrid to start the next gap with. I play a 2, 3, 5 hybrid, they work perfectly for me, i then carry 7 iron upwards, Driver and 3 wood, all gapped and works for me

    Of course the hybrid goes further, 2* stronger and a longer shaft. Duh!!! So what, everybody is caught up with distance when distance control is what counts. Hybrids are great for higher handicaps but give me a long iron anytime if I'm trying to hit a certain target. I'm 66 been playing since I was 12 and I play with standard loft 25* 5 iron Srixon forged heads and standard weight steel shafts 3-wedges. I hit a 3 iron 190-200, nice and high with plenty of spin. You can also drive it under the wind and I chip with it too sometimes from lies exactly like he said you can't use a 3 iron from. Just want people to know that you can play golf without hybrids. My 18* 5 wood can be used like a hybrid if necessary for cipping etc.

  • @trottiegolf

    @trottiegolf

    5 ай бұрын

    I have deep ties with TaylorMade but I think this vid applies to anyone out there looking at a hybrid club. Ref the joke part to give a little more context. I learnt to play at a coastal town in the UK. For me to look down on 22* and play it at 3i length is just something I'm not feeling as a PLYR. To get a 3i out of my bag would be tough hence why I carry the 4 wood, to go deeper and answer your point, I made the 3 hybrid as this would be my preference and I'd then go 3 wood over 4 wood and drop straight to 4i hence why I placed in the knock down shot (scenario 3 I believe). I think I could have done a better job explaining that but when all is said and done that's what the comment section is for. The shaft at that length is where I'd have it to sit in to a different bag set up and the 22* just not for me as too lofty and an even higher apex. Albeit you could have worded your comment a little different it's a valid call out and something I'll address the next time I talk hybrids or in the case of TaylorMade Rescue clubs.

    Trottie, convince your engineering dept to come up with some bendable hosels for the average Joe. Its a bit of shame that hybrids are advocated so well for, and yet hardly any (if at all) of the major OEMs offer the ability for the average golfer to at least have a proper lie angle (at minimum) for them. Its nice and all that the tour vans have the fancy block molds, etc...but the average guy is left out in the cold on this. I've never understood why what can be one of the more important aspects to make these work for the player is overlooked for the average consumer.

I’m 51, a newly anointed single digit player 9.8, and I’ve removed my 4-5 iron this year, and the results are INCREDIBLE! I’m hitting both a club longer in distance, and increased my accuracy with both on approach shots! It’s definitely helped me lower my scores on long par 3s and approaches on par 5s!
