Hybrid Modular Ep. 1
Up until the global travel situation abruptly changed I was preparing for a European tour. My focus was building an entirely new hybrid hardware + software modular system to travel light and enter some new sonic zones. I had begun to document the process with the aim to create a short series of videos following my progress and covering the design and implementation of this new instrument. This series is still happening, it’ll just be spread out in time a bit more-which is a relief, actually.
And I'm hopeful that the EU tour can be rescheduled for later in the year (or next year). But for now, please join me on the internets, starting with Episode 1, which was shot just before the global situation changed, but somehow seems quite relevant in honor of The Fool on this first day of April.
Please subscribe and ring the bell to be notified of future episodes and, please-stay safe out there (in there)!
Your pal,
Lightbath

    Looking forward to future episodes of this series! When I'm configuring a case of modules to use with VCV Rack or Ableton's CV Tools, I find myself cramming the case with as many sound sources as possible, with enough EGs and VCAs for all of them, using space normally allocated for effects, clocks, mixing, and random sources which the software can easily handle. I've found I can also live without a sequencer to make space for a special effect like the Magneto, especially with all of the creative sequencer options in VCV Rack or Ableton's follow-actions, for a similar generative approach I'd normally get from hardware, except in situations where performing on the sequencer is integral to the composition. I also like processing software audio channels through a module like the Morphagene or Nebulae and back into the software, through the ES-8/9 ins and outs. Looking forward to seeing and hearing your approach!

    It looks like your case's wooden ends are what's causing the bowing on the top and bottom sides; They stick out the most. So long as you wrap a little bit of foam on those ends so they don't rub against the insides of the case, you should be good. studio foam, egg carton foam, it's all foam, pick whichever suits ya. Could even cut out those portions from the original foam liner.

    Nice. I have my size studio modular (114HP*12U) integrated with ES3+ES6 and Bitwig... so I go mostly full-on modular, but whenever I need extra VCAs, a crossfader, or an entire harmonic oscillator I can set it up in Bitwig Grid. I love working with MDR as Dmitriy is great and the cases are really good. I love the new case design and at the moment this is my favorite case. I love the size and weight and am happy with my Malekko board in it. Did you ever consider an Intellijel 104HP 7U case, which is just under carry on luggage size requirements (in Europe). Did you think it was not sturdy enough, or are some airline's specs for carry on smaller?

  • @Lightbath

    @Lightbath

    4 жыл бұрын

    Ah yeah, I had put much consideration toward whether or not I would just use my Intellijel 104. There were a few factors that influenced my decision. I found it challenging to use without an external mixer and effects; at least the way I tend to configure things, the flexibility I like to design just doesn’t really fit into that size when going all-hardware. Plus, I wanted to travel with only a backpack and my modular and wanted to be able to roll the modular and also keep it protected inside a Pelican in case a particular airline wouldn’t allow me to carry it on. The last situation I wanted to find myself in was being forced to gate check my modular without a protective case 😬

    Maybe this summer. The timescale changed when the world changed this spring so I’ve had to make changes in my projects timeline. That is, there’s no tour planned for the foreseeable future, so this project is no longer getting top priority. Plus, there’s a ton of work involved in designing, refining, and getting to know the new system so as to make it a usable *instrument* and I don’t want to rush things.

    Well, yes. If I try to make a round trip within a voice, it’s just not possible. That is, if I try to generate notes in the rack to play a VCO in the computer that is enveloped back in the rack, things don’t align. But if I go one way from rack CV to computer voice or computer CV to rack voice it’s fine.

    Good question. I'm actually starting preparations for the next set of episodes this winter. The pandemic and a dying laptop put a long hold on my original hybrid system but I've got a new laptop and have been testing a new system since the summer. My summer injury put another hold on the vids, but I'm recovering nicely and ready to move forward soon. Stay tuned!
