Great video man I absolutely love this. This is almost exactly how I use my 500 series rack for mixing at home. It’s usually not about reinventing the wheel but rather for me it’s more about feeding the signal through the gear for subtle tone/stereo image shaping and warmth. You really can hear the difference. This is the main reason why I decided to start a hybrid set up after mixing/producing exclusively with plug-ins for the past 10 years or so. I think everybody can learn something valuable from this no matter how big or small your budget is. 500 series modules really are the best way to learn and experiment with really reputable analog gear for the first time. To me it’s incredibly inspiring to think about how these days we pretty much have everything we need to make a hit record from our home.

Great review David, wondering about what hardware sounds like as you get into mixing starts to niggle at you after you mix for a while and develop your ears, I did a similar test for myself with mixanalog and access analog services and put the software emulations on, compared them to the hardware and it was that "width and depth" you explain you hear that seems to be the difference in the hardware... My question to you and what I'd love to see more of (and I've just started seeing this line of video from you today, you may have even done this already?) is how the hardware emulations sound to that hardware, NOT in the exact same settings, but if you tweak the software emulations a tad, to get the almost exact same sound (well as much as you can with the software emu's) and see if there's a significant difference to justify the expense of hardware, I got it close, but there was a 1-3% "magic" to the end sound from the hardware... Following your progress with these tests with great interest, thanks for taking the time to explain them and share with us!

You are correct, it's not really a fair comparison, but still it's an interesting contrast...what I'd be curious to know is how hard you were driving the Neve preamp, because to me it's the added harmonics that are the most critical addition a hybrid set up gives you...

I just happened to have started experimenting with this yesterday using my Daking and Capi 500 series preamps. In your next vid any chance you can show how you're running the signal out of the daw, into the preamp and back? I've been sending mine out into the mic input of the preamp using a -25db pad made by Shure to attenuate the signal in hopes that it will be closer to mic level. Seems to be working but I'm curious if there's a better way or if I need a pad that attenuates even more to get the best results. Glad I came across your channel I'm looking forward to checking out the next round of vids on this subject. Thanks and take care.

Hi, really nice and informative video there! I started to build the 1073 preamp and eq from Soundskulptor, which should perform exactly like your Neve modules. They have the Neve compressor as well. How much of an added value would you consider the compressor to the typical Neve sound? I want to get either this compressor or go with something entirely different like a G-buss compressor. I already have 1176 and LA3A, and plan to add more within the coming year. Is the comp versatile for tracking? I'd mainly want it there to impart the richness of the sound while tracking.

Can you break down your exact I/O method Cabling (XLR, Balanced/Unbalanced/Interface Input Setting). I've tried to research this on the internet and I can't find any proper answers, and I'm too dumb to understand if my cabling is causing issues or now. What I have is: Two Outputs from Interface (TRS) > DIYRE L2P Attenuator > XLR's > 500 Series Chassis > XLR out of Chassis (w/XLR to TRS Cable) > TRS Cable into Interface Inputs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Stereo widthnes is because of different phase shifts in L/R. The real hardware is not 100.0000% left/right-matching in the EQ due to physical components and their tolerances. That's the reason why perception of the HW is like "better sounding".

The raw tracks are just too "boxy" for me to make a fair comparison at this point. The drums do sound clarified and seem to sit back a little further in the sound field. Not too long ago I built a Hairball Audio 1176 Blue Stripe clone and recorded some comparisons to the Universal Audio plugin and it was really hard to tell the difference even in the "All Buttons" mashed scenario. Even the wave forms looked almost identical. The biggest difference I found is that outboard gear is a HUGE time vampire compared to mixing in the box. Every recording scenario had to be done at real time vs. slapping on the plugin and your done. I now see why sound engineers are mixing mostly in the box. I can only imagine how long it took you to run each of those tracks through. Fun stuff though for sure. Looking forward to hearing what's next...

ShawnstaMonsta interesting enough, I find that plugins are far more fiddly and prone to time wasting. I went from in the box to out of the box. Now I can basically record by simply editing audio and basic mixing as hardware requires less effort to have “finished “ results.
