HYBRID ELASTICS - THE TRUTH! | Pole Fishing Myth BUSTER!
Спорт
It is true to say that Hybrid Elastic is now the most popular choice for pole fishing here in the UK. Its soft and forgiving nature combined with progressive power and long lasting material makes it the ideal choice ⚫🟡
But what are the actual FACTS of the stuff? We get all scientific (well kind of) to bring you a few answers that may help you make a better informed choice when buying your new elastic.

Bringing Joe on board has really seemed to have transformed Nufish as a brand. I’m certain his addition will have a hugely positive influence on the brand. Great vid 🎣

You have to do a graph lads, there is a very famous saying in continuous improvement methodology "if you can't draw it, you can't understand it* and it is very true for anything. Please produce one. Top draw video by the way.
Great test. Having returned to fishing after many years, replaced all elastics with Zipp after seeing a Tommy Pickering video. Absolutely brilliant stuff. Wouldn't use anything else. Thanks Nu Fish. Stay safe and thanks again.

Nice one on your return. I'm just about to get back on the bank after about 16 years. Just got a rod license, so that's full commitment from me. Going Friday, can't wait. Bought a few of this NuFish hybrid elastic and different ratings. Will be elasticating my poweredge 8.5m top 2s, but not sure what to go for elastic rating wise, 8-10, 10-12, 12-14...? Will be on a "commercial" on Friday. Edit: after watching and listening to this, looks like I'll load up with the black 12-14. Might put the 10-12 on the other top kit.
Interesting Mick, seen many pole breakages over the years best not to rely on line or elastic breaking first.
Absolutely great video, I have often thought about line ratings to elastic rating and this has confirmed to me that you don't need big thick elastic and thick line for double figure carp, as long as you know when to give abit and use the correct knots the chances are you will land the fish. Tight lines 🤙

I only ever used a size 20 elastic once on the advice of a tackle dealer..... Snapped my top kit. I've never used anything over a 13 since, there's no need I feel, if I was match fishing a snag pit then I'd possibly increase but I'd only use it with a margin power pole.
As an inexperienced pole fisher man I thought this should be good it could help me to understand the matching of line, to elastics, to the venue and what I am fishing for. After the tests and comparisons you did it all comes down to experience and what the angler feels comfortable with. Thank you very much throughly enjoyed the video, I shall now go away and do my own thing and adapt my equipment and style to the type of fish and venue. Thanks again.

Proper thorough test I was expecting the thicker elastic to stretch less and pull the scales more. Great watch chaps 👏👏

‘The answer is I don’t think there is an answer’ summed it up - its experience. I tested the breaking strain of various lines and they all broke well below what was stated on the box and concluded the stated strains were meaningless! Good video. You have proved that hybrid elastic in good condition won’t break.

Well said!
When I got my 1st pole, when elastic went to max of Preston solid 8 (just before the Future stuff, I think, came out), the packaging had diameter and breaking strain. It roughly was 2lb, maybe 3lb, breaking strain a over the grade ie no.6 was 8lb and no.8 was 10lb. I still have a pack of number 6 from about 1996/7 here somewhere. Nice video guys 🙂

@@NuFish I will try to remember where it is and get a pic, I reckon it's in my old Danson Angling seatbox at the back of my shed..... I can see it in my head sat on top of some pole winders. God knows what else I may have 🤷🤔
A very interesting experiment showing that lines can’t be trusted, maybe try using using a full rig where there would be additional stretch in the main and hook length lines combined, Before hydro I used to use Preston original maximum purple 14 and loved the yellow (12) which I landed lots of big fish using 0.12 Silstar and have the same results now using black hydro,
Fantastic work. Thank you guys. Exactly what companies should be doing, testing there products to the limits!

Understand it a lot more keep than coming Mick n Joe
The more power the elastic has the quicker it's going to break the line as it puts more force through your rig so you need to balance your elastic to your rig line accordingly which comes down to experience and also how you play the fish.
Was dragging 8lbers out if reeds yesterday with the black through a short kit and 0.13 bottom and had no issues.
Great so far, looks good elastic, next thing to have tried to show is repeatability 👍😅
Love these types of videos, really interesting and informative 👍. Really strange that 3lb 4 oz mono line was breaking at less than 1lb of force (even with knots). Also, I'd of expected that same line on every test to break at roughly the same breaking strain (or force) whatever elastic was used, with only the elastic diameter and stretch distance dictating when that same force was achieved.

Great video helps out a lot for us average anglers well gone guys
I must be the world champion at breaking elastics. I have broken 2 Hydrolastics 6-10 and 10-14 but they were old and I broke a 6-8 Frenzee on an 0.13 4lb bottom. I altered the way I connected the elastic to the Dacron, not pulling the knot so tight as I think it was maybe cutting through. No problems since. I am catching some lumps though. 🙄 Maybe an age/use by date would be useful, as I purchased a new Hydrolastic that was perished in no time at all ☹️
Important to realise that the poundage the elastics broke at were dead weight as well. Nothing to do with weight of fish etc in water, you are not winching fish up in the air. Pretty impressive when you look at it that way. Great vid.
Really enjoyed this, great work lads.

Can't say I've ever considered the breaking strain of the elastic, most I've used I grab about a foot and stretch my arms out to see how it feels, only had worn out stuff let go on that test. I have occasionally wondered how they came up with the grading system though, and if it perhaps needs re-evaluating given the newer materials being used. I was confused as heck why Drennan dumped the ratings on their power pull range, stating the diameter only, but I'm not using it so didn't bother chasing it.

Do you not think dura elastics seem to stretch then lock up suddenly? So, how far should a metre of 11 elastic stretch?
I only have 4 top kit im thinking one with 18+ for margins monsters. But dont knows what to put in the others 3 im i dont target anythings just 6mm and maggot for me. But the place i got do have 13lb carp so what would you recommend

It’s not pressure it’s Strain i.e. extension divided by original length 😉
All you was doing towards the end was testing the loop knot strength which will vary every time if you roughly hand tie them.
Great vid!

Pressure x the stretch will give you fish size capabilities which would be easier to work out a line rating

Excellent video, what people must realise is fish are neutral by weight in water you are actually fighting the strength of the fish, up to when it's under your pole tip near the surface of the water then some weight does become involved,
Thanks lads. Well interesting.

with 1200mm of thicker line replicating a rig above the 200mm of 3lb 4oz line I think there would be a greater breaking force, saying that it could all be down to a poor spool of line and Micks dodgy knot tying giving the breaking point at a low percentage of the stated breaking strain compared to the thicker line
You have opened Pandoras box with this so many variables you could explore

All hybrid elastics are very strong and durable, have used most brands over last 3 years, best to stick to one brand for continuity.

So is the elastic made up of exactly the same material and just thicker or does each colour have a different manufacturing process and raw materials ?
