24th minute is relevant, although he took a while to demonstrate the point. 39th minute onward, more or less.

Grant had great math skills and sprired to teach mathematics at est Point. This is what made him a great quartermaster.

I read the biography. It is great. One of the best. This talk is great. The insights about the study of history were great. He does give Grant short shrift in this talk. He oversimplifies and feeds into the “butcher” myth as well as the “war of attrition” myth. Lee and Grant were very similar in tactics, focusing on winning battles and campaigns rather than avoiding the loss of men (Lee’s ratios were worse than Grant). Grant was also a brilliant tactician, as evidenced by the Vicksburg campaign, which was unequaled in genius by anyone. But overall, a great perspective and delightful talk.

Unequaled? How about Napoleon, Ceasar, Hannibal, Alexander the Great? I heard they conquered a lot of land and did dozens of battle. May be they do not count as their campaigns were bigger, longer and did not happen in the US.

Actually, many mathematical theorems have alternative proofs. Calculus students learn quickly that there are many ways to calculate the area of a circle or the volume of a sphere, all agreeing on the result. Now, something as complicated as Fermat's last theorem may be unlikely to see a second proof, but it is not inconceivable and would be celebrated, even if not as much as the first.
