@amitfri He is young here. Check out his 2007 performance with Fleming at the Met. 15 years later, he has a much more mature demeanor. Agreed, though, the boredom is a great character trait for Onegin.

1992, I believe. Yeah, it's strange. Maybe not a good day, it happens. Luckily, singing's not just about high notes, can you imagine that? Coincidentally, I tried to imagine it just yesterday: The tenor comes, makes a bow, sings several high Cs, since that's why everyone has come, anyway, and then the audience applaud and go home! XD

@Tanechka80 the reason I said this is because I have heard him sing the high F several times, also in person. He sings high notes so freely that I was just surprised.

You're welcome. I might be able to upload it again with better sound, but it's going to be complicated... sigh.

The reason of not singing the high F it could be conductor's discretion. For my taste this change of Tchaikovsky's score for show's sake is OK, but there are added high sounds that make me hesitate between anger and pity - for example high D at the end of Janusz' song in Moniuszko's Halka. Certainly "normal" F matches better with "boredom" of Evgenij.

Michal Czaposki you may be correct in your comment. Many conductors, one James Levine always used the last one he scribed, another was Muti. Info according to Dmitri in an interview.

ONEGIN You wrote to me. Don't deny it. I have read the avowal of a trusting heart, the outpouring of an innocent love; your candour touched me deeply. It has stirred feelings long since dormant. I won't commend you for this, But I will repay you with an equally guileless avowal. Hear my confession, then judge me as you will! TATYANA collapsing again onto the bench O God! How humiliating and how painful! ONEGIN If I wished to pass my life within the confines of the family circle, and a kindly fate had decreed for me the role of husband and father, then, most like, I would not choose any other bride than you. But I was not made for wedded bliss, it is foreign to my soul, your perfections are vain, I am quite unworthy of them. Believe me, I give you my word, marriage would be a torment for us. No matter how much I loved you, habit would kill that love. Judge what a thorny bed of roses Hymen would prepare for us, and, perhaps, to be endured at length! One cannot return to dreams and youth, I cannot renew my soul! I love you with a brother's love, a brother's love or, perhaps, more than that! Perhaps, perhaps more than that! Listen to me without getting angry, more than once will a girl exchange one passing fancy for another. Learn to control your feelings; … … Not everyone will understand you as I do. Inexperience leads to disaster!

I don't know when this was done, but I cannot believe that Dmitri did not sing the high note at the end.

beuatiful voice, no soul, no meaning, bored with himself and with his singing. no wonder he had such a huge success as onjegin. he really is an onjegin.

He is playing a part. He always enters his roles with his whole self. As a person he definitely has soul and heart.
