I love the review! I was about to by one however if it can't mow with one side up or two sides up I don't want it. Absolute deal breaker! Thanks again

Jimmy Dean glad you liked the review. Disclaimer I'm the guy that ran/talked about the 104. Yes the mower has a steep price but spending 1.5 hours on the 104 compared to a 60" that took over 3.5 hours, the price becomes less over the whole season.

I'm a state employee we bought one for me to use and it didn't last a year. Was in the shop 2 months after buying it. If all you cut is level grass it's a great mower. Too much work just to adjust the cutting height , the deck bends to easily and parts such as the belts, spindles and blades arent kept in stock . Takes weeks to get them . Overall it's a 4 out of 10

Have you checked the throttle cable connection. A lot of mowers come from the factory to a certain spec.. I had to rebook the spring that my cable connected to..the spring has multiple slots. Got an easy 20% minimum more power out of the mower.

Gary Sisk, I agree. The range wing was an awesome machine. I almost bought one in 02 but decided on a 3200 instead with a quad cycler deck and hydraulic edger. My first hustler was a 1500 in 98.’ The dealer who sold the hustler could actually put a cab with ac on the 4600.

Hustler made the best large area mower ever with the Range-Wing. I had 2-3 of them with in my 30 years mowing school districts and they worked great for large areas, sports fields etc. They quit the Range-Wing a few years ago so I went to Jacobson and Toro wide area mowers. I felt with a little upgrading on the Hustler it was the best by far. Diesel engines is the only way to go on large area mowers, gas engines just don't get the run time diesels do, nor do they have the required torque. Hustler killed a damn good mower design. I used Scag, Toro, Gravely, and some residential zero turns but the Hustler were always the best for me, especially when you consider doing school grounds which are typically large areas.

Second the motion. I've two Hustler 4600 range wings right now. For those that don't know it's a front mount zero turn with 38 hp Kubota diesel that runs 10 mph and has 146 in cut (72" front deck and two 48" wings with overlap) and you can lift the wings and they auto shut off. If they had upgraded with a more powerful diesel and figured out a way to reduce the weight, they'd still have an awesome mower. I'd like to compare one to the 104; from what I've seen and read so far I'm not impressed with the 104.

They were amazing mowers, better by far the any wide area mowers I ever used, especially at their price point. If redesigned to a 50+ horse power turbo diesel and a little heavier design on the side decks lifting mechanism and it was perfect. I ran it between schools and had plenty of road speed so trailering was not necessary, it was an amazing mower. I contacted Hustler many times about bringing it back but they never responded. Toro is taking the market on wide area mowers now, and although great machines they are awful expensive and too dang heavy for clay type soil bases. They will rut the heck out of sports fields.

I’ll sum it up for u. I demoed one when they first came out. They cut like crap...! It’s a rear discharge. Have u ever heard of a rear discharge that leaves a good cut..? And, what do people pay us for...?... a nice looking lawn..! Kinda defeats the purpose. Also, it’s a very slow mower. Speed makes a huge difference when you’re mowing a 30 acre property. I have a 72” exmark with a diesel that I paid $3500 for. It’s an 03’. I bought it in 2012 with 1700 hours on it. I mow everything with it, leaves a beautiful cut, sips fuel(The hustler wouldn’t). I could buy another 72” for the same money and mow that same property in a fraction of the time and make it look much better.. and still only have $7k in equipment..! Even with a second worker, it still makes more sense over a $27k mower. And when that mower breaks....

There must be some lawn services out there with a Hustler 104 and a Toro or Exmark 96. I’d love to see a comparison video. I think with the Exmark and Toro 96 they can mow with the wings up. I can see it now customers freaking out over such a huge mower going on their lawn and it leaving ruts in the ground. Customers wanted me to get off of my riding mower and use a walk behind. Well I only had 21” walk mowers and my knees hurt. That was in the 90’s and I didn’t know i had Lyme disease until 2013. After several customers freaked out about a riding mower on the lawn I lifted tires on my riding mower and put paper under them and calculated the square inches. Then I did the same with my shoes and the pounds per square foot were about double with the small and slow little Wheel Horse tractor I had. I would be walking 10-20 miles a day if I didn’t have a riding mower. I quit my lawn service years ago and just deliver pizza.

Change to an HDAP tire or ag/lug type tire, then add weight to the rear and I think that should improve how it handles the hills. I wonder how much that 104” deck weighs? I’d guess 500 to 800 pounds.

Yes,🌼 allabout.wiki/Hustler the bag fills up pretty quickly when there are lots of leaves and I guess that is expected. It is quick to take the leaf catching bag off and put it back on. There is one bar with rubber ends that fits into a slot (bottom), one bar with angled ends that hangs on rubber hooks (top), and two stretchy loops that each hang on a rubber hook (one each side). You can hold the leaf catching bag with one hand full and not drop any leaves. It is NOT easy to empty it into a lawn bag without spilling. My trick: I put two lawn bags side-by-side in a large garbage bin and emptied the leaf catching bag into them. What spills falls into the garbage bin. 90% of the leaves end up in the bags this way with 0% back on the lawn.

Is it vertical shaft? You should put one of those huge 999 cc kohlers in it on a repower. I repower all the time and vanguards have fewer cc's than kawi or kohler and the kohlers have more torque, when will you do a review on the 72?

+JL's INC. well, you wouldnt do something like this unless you didnt care about warranty, i buy 1500 + hour machines and repower means putting in a new engine. I usually do this when I feel an engine isnt performing to my spec (and again, I do this to my stuff because I have engines to play around with,) or because the old one is worn out. The Vanguard should last a long while, if you want i can post a video explaining how I do this.

You know that machine is not made for hillsides. That machine is made for large flat areas like Fields baseball fields football fields Soccer Fields golf courses things like that. Industrial-sized acreage and flat ground. Get on a smaller unit when you need to hit the hillsides. This mower is obviously geared toward large landowners who have serious land that needs cut.
