I am very grateful for this video. I am 25 and my wife is pregnant with our first child and I am working an entry level job as she goes through school. I am not making enough money for us to do anything out side of rent and groceries, and it frustrates me seeing my peers buying houses and graduating with their own degrees. It is helpful to know that we will be ok in the long run and I do not need to stress on getting our dream house now.

@@user-yq7xf2ss6e Exactly. Many "hustle culture" types are single young people living in/near urban areas like Boston, Austin, NYC, and Seattle. They're well educated in engineering or the sciences and very talented. They can take advantage of the many opportunities in tech companies and startups that these areas offer (yes, these places also have their downsides). They have the good health of youth so insurance is less of a concern. But, not everyone is like that or wants to live such a lifestyle. Hustle culture doesn't always fit the typical middle aged, middle America average family folks.

Amen. High school teacher for 38 years. In my early years I was a coach, youth group leader, Deacon, scout leader (two different groups at one time) worship team leader and anything else that came along. I felt great. Everyone loved me. But I almost lost my family. It’s not worth it. God first, family second everything else…
I whole heartedly agree with this. The book of Ecclesiastes is a short read yet sheds so much truth on perspective of life. It says alot about the vanity in laboring too much. "Every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.". Work is a living, but it becomes a problem when you can't stop to enjoy the good that comes from it, a home, a wife, family, friends, a hobby if you can. Those good things are a gift from God and shouldn't be wasted. Learn how to enjoy them. "He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.".
Totally agree. I'm 38 and work in a fast paced industry. Everybody wants everything right now. I'm pushed to work extra constantly but I draw the boundaries needed to spend time with my family and have time to be not at work. Several years ago I had a side hustle and burned out. My wife felt like I wasn't around. I don't do that anymore. Thanks for this reminder!
“A successful man isn’t so singularly minded” that’s very helpful sir. Thanks for addressing this subject, and pointing out the way one should go.
I wish more people realized all this. Burnout is real.
This was me until two months ago. i was so busy grinding work and other stuff that i put my family on the back burner kinda. And it took my wife telling me she felt lonely one day we were out doing stuff, and i was like, im right here. That's when i just paused and looked at myself saying nope this is not the way. Changed and made a priority to balance work, play, life better, and I've seen my life get better by leaps and bounds.
Put god first and when your solid with him the rest will follow. It worked for me. God bless
Not to be rude or anything…but hustle culture actually SAVED my life! I love it! Love your channel, keep it up! 🤘😎
I failed at the husband and father aspect because I was chasing that "work hard and long" pipe dream. I thought that is what it took to provide for my family. While financially I was able to, I ended up neglecting my family. Hindsight I see where I screwed up, but now it is a little too late. So, please find that balance before it is too late.
Needed this. Praise god. I’ve had 3 weekends off this year.. I’m 40, never married and no kids.. God told me this yesterday and this morning I’m watching this video. Not a coincidence. “Fools gold”. Totally get it. My Bible time is suffering and so am I. Thank you John for your obedience to god.
After reading “Defenders of the West” I would love to hear your opinion on the silent jihad that is occurring in our country. A conversation between you and Raymond Ibrahim would be very timely. Stay blessed my friend and please continue doing what you do!
While it's crucial to strive for success, burnout and neglecting other aspects of life can lead to disaster.
As a car salesman, I definitely have gotten to a point where I feel that work has been the priority. Today is the first day that I’ve worn regular clothes and not my everyday uniform. When it gets to that point, you have to take a long look in the mirror, get off your phone, and be present with yourself, family and God. I really appreciate this channel. Thank you
I swear, John has the best takes, it’s honestly very refreshing.
Chasing the elusive will eventually end in confusion and disillusionment. Do the right thing, period. Enjoy life and all it has to offer, with a focus on "Do The Right Thing". Strength comes from a strong belief in God and Family. Just remember in life you have to opportunity to, make money and get things, but those will always deuterate and fail. Relationships built on love and strength, with compassion and understanding of Family and their needs, those will last a lifetime. Those bonds are what is important.
Needed this today. While I’m in very great shape relative to my whole life - much stronger than I ever was in the military - I feel like a failure or slob when I can’t get to the gym to get a workout in. Recently I have found a great deal of fulfillment prioritizing my wife and kids during days off work because of hardened role models like you professing the importance of balance
"If you can’t take a full day off from work, you’re idolizing work." That's a great sentiment, bu unrealistic for much of the rank-and-file. There are many companies out there that will fire-at-will for taking "too much" time off. Such employees are under constant threat of losing their jobs and don't dare take their eyes of the ball. Fire-at-will means no justification is needed to get rid of folks. Sure, legal action can be attempted, if affordable, and if someone wants to go up against the often large law corporate law firms. The cold truth and flip side is that the management of such companies often identify as conservative republicans. Capitalism is a great system that delivers benefits to society but it means profit over all else. If management's bonuses are tied to cost reductions, and layoffs are a quick way to do so, guess what? All of the charity and kindness they claim as Christians goes right out the window. We who served often forget that the military is socialist in the way it delivers healthcare, housing, and other entitlements to the warfighters and their families. You can certainly get fired from a position but unless you did something criminal or unethical, you'll get another assignment and continue to get paid as well as receive benefits. I'm not claiming that is good for society as a whole but it creates an unrealistic mindset.
Been there. Done that. Now I found the balance but it took a few decades. Great message!
I love it. My wife and I both took a step back at the end of 2023. I took a pay cut to have a more family oriented schedule. My wife changed careers and now works part time so she can be home for our kids. We’re barely getting by financially, BUT life is SO MUCH BETTER. Money is much less important and your children only grow up once.
thank you so much for making this video. I really needed to hear this. 28 years old and I just recently went through burnout and it definitely affected me mentally. I had to take time away from work to focus on what’s important because burn out from work was causing me to not be able to engage in my relationships with people I love.
I'm just praying I ever make it it the point that this is something I have to deal with.
one of my biggest issues with today's society is the amount of go go go it tries to force on you at any moment, its nice to see others validate those thoughts, being 39 and still having not found a passion i can turn into a solid career sucks, constantly im fighting feelings of disapointment with myself which i counter with my faith in god that ill be where i need to be when its time to be there, being a nerd type i tend to prefer a relaxed lifestyle so the go go go of society is a huge drain on me mentally.
I don't know why but when you said that unresolved conflict can inhibit sleep. I had this feeling that I understand how to fight my demons now. I feel as if my prayers have been answered. Thank you John.
Wish I saw this video before I figured this out. It was a hard long road but it clicks when you get it. Solid video. Solid advice.

Needed this today man. Will be 30 this year, unfortunately me and my wife are separated going on 2 years but we have a wonder 3 1/2 year old boy that is the best part of my life. Trying to balance everything and trying to continue to grow for both myself and my son has been overwhelming at times and I’ve suffered from burnout in the past few months. Been trying to dial things in more recently and not try to “sprint” so much and “jog” more. Been my biggest challenge recently to balance everything This video gave me some peace of mind, thanks for posting
I have recently found that the “hustle culture” sermon which is pressured on men is way too much when you value family over materialistic items. It’s the reason I’ve decided to stop trying to work for an employer or even start my own business. Instead, I’ll be focusing on my off-grid homestead so I can live a self sustaining lifestyle living in a rustic 18th century log cabin and a horse for transportation.

Glad you made a video about this as it needs to be talked about more. I’ve been taking a step back over the last year to realize I’ll never be as young as I am now, my dogs won’t be around forever, and life becomes plain miserable when you’re solely focused on the future. Try to enjoy the journey and not always focus on the destination.
I really needed the reminder to rest. My wife and I are adopting 3 foster kids so I went from a household of 2 to a household of 5 overnight 2 months ago. If it’s not for work, it’s for my wife. If it’s not for either of them, it’s for the kids. What does rest look like for the successful family man? I had this figured out for a married couple but now I’m just burning both ends of the candle and saying “good men make sacrifices”

Absolutely no hate on any oilfield guys. I’m talking about me. I had to leave the oilfield about 1 month after my oldest was born. I wanted to be home. I went to a M-F, regular hour job so I could be there. We were broke and it was hard but I’ve never regretted it once. The Lord took care of us then and still does now.
I got chills listening to this one. So good. Sharing with our teen son. Such good stuff!
You pretty much nailed it. My biggest problem with hustle culture is the overwhelming importance it places on income, fitness and in many cases serial dating. Its foolish to stack your deck for something so impermanent as those things. What about family, love, compassion, honor? What about the fact that when you die and meet God, that money will mean nothing, the gym time will be irrelevant and the only memory that will tie you to this life and the next will be the people you loved and cared for and your place in eternity will be decided by whom and what you placed your faith in.
Lot to contemplate. Love it. Timely and all that jazz. tuning in going forward

Wow this video speaks to me. I could have used this in the earlier years of my fatherhood and husbandry. I pushed myself too hard and missed out on crucial family time, and we also pushed our kids too hard and I believe added too much stress to our kids lives. Thank you John for putting this information out there for young fathers. I'll be passing this lesson along to my son.
Balance is the perfect word only good thing i got out of my hustle phase was a mindset to improve on anything you put into priority.

Something society needs genuinely is to redefine success. That was probably the biggest thing I appreciated about the Warrior Poet Way. I'm not sure that anyone has conveyed that quite as well as John does in the book. But that said, since reading the book I've realized that communication is the key to success in marriage. I definitely fall under this vein of wanting to work (especially when you love what you do, it doesn't feel like work). But it can become so easy to neglect all other things for that end. That's a great thing, a huge blessing. But now that we've improved our communication, my wife does a great job of balancing me and letting me know when I'm leaning into that good thing too much.
Exactly what I needed. Really good stuff. Thank you!

Perfect timing, thanks 🙏
You are a very thoughtful and wise person, John. I wish more people had the guts to be as counter cultural as you are. Money isn't everything in life. Working 12 hr days isn't normal or natural for any extended period of time. We shouldn't pursue money at the expense of freedom and time with family and friends. That goes for men and women. Make less and live simpler lives if need be instead of giving your life away to work and spending your money on the shiny new object. I got distracted from my life's calling to pursue money and it ended in disaster now I am trying to get back to my calling in life, even if it means I make less money I'll have more freedom and less stress.
There’s a verse that goes with this and I remind myself of it often. Pro 13:11 Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.
When you made the video a couple years ago on getting C’s on purpose it made me realize we have to prioritize that which matters most to us. Giving 100% means giving 60% to something and 40% to another
