Husky Trek 2022 - my Husqvarna 701 the morning after 2000 ks of tough stuff.

Dave Darcy, Editor at Large of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine and shooter producer of Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV (MAD TV), took his own 2021 Husqvarna 701 to the 2022 Husky Trek, held in the hinterland to the west of Gympie, Queensland, Australia.
The Husky Trek is unique and organised by Husqvarna Motorcycles Australia and the only one of it's kind in the world where only Husqvarna 701s and 901s can participate. The ride caters for a range of rider skills and covers over 2000 kilometres in 5 days. Each day has a number of 'break out' sections for more experienced riders that can be challenging at times. The country traversed during the day is a spectacular mix of fast flowing twin trails, single trails, tracks and dirt roads. There are occasional tar transport sections to get to the next forest.
MAD TV will be showcasing a full movie length adventure of the Husky Trek in the coming weeks. This video is about focussing on Dave's bike after the Husky Trek. What worked, what broke, what he'd do different next time.
Dave's bike has travelled just over 10,000 kilometres in some of Australia's harshest conditions and trails including the Flinders Ranges and a 7000 kilometre extreme adventure across the tropical top end of Australia from Cairns, nearly to Broome. The movie series is called Tropical Punch and is on this channel. Click the link below.

    Vanasche Motorsports in the USA sells a bypass unit for the sidestand that I carry with my 690 in case that magnet is lost or fails. They also have a billet fuel cap that preserves the existing vent line. The 690/701 platform is a great lightweight adventure machine.

    Lyndon Poskitt sells neoprene sleeves on his web shop that guards the lower leg of the forks, so the mud dries on that instead of directly on the metal. Acerbis sells ones too. Regarding plastic skid plate I had the AXP one on my 701 and it worked really well. Smacked it plenty of times.

    At first seems like a lot of pressure in the tires as 22psi is in the ktm manual, but there is differences from tire to tire. More road biased tires like the stock ones are harder carcass and they form the same "belly" on the contact patch as do enduro tires with much more pressure due to weaker more flexible construction, so one would generally run enduro tyres on dual sports at higher pressures than 50-50 dual sport tires? Is this somewhat correct? I had IRC on my CRF250L, then Pirelli MT21 which on same pressure looks like it has less pressure, and Michelin Tracker now looks even a bit less (more belly on contact patch if same psi). I guess one should not go by the psi number for different tires but just looking at how "squished" or how much "belly" does the specific tire make.

    Looking forward to your movie. Does the 701 complement the T7 well or would the Red Rooster CRF 300 be a better stablemate for a T7 (one an adventure tourer and the other, as you put it, for adventure exploring)? Seems like the T7 and the 701 might overlap too much - both great bikes! Your Husky sounds great with the Arrow exhaust.

    It seems that, without extensive modification, the rooster isnt going to be nearly as capable as the 701 for exploring where the 701 seems to be a "ready to rock" package. But thats just the opinion of someone who hasn't ridden either 😅

  • @JohannesDalen

    @JohannesDalen

    I'm fortunate to have both at the moment. I personally don't think there's that much overlap between the T7 and the 701 - different bikes for different tasks. The T7 is night and day better on the road and the 701 is night and day better offroad. I tried to turn my 701 into a lightweight adventure bike, but I just couldn't get it to be comfy enough for all the road miles that I have to cover to get to the trails, even with a rally windscreen. For trips like the one Dave went on here I'd go with the 701, for more easy gravel and longer stretches of tarmac, I'd go with the T7. T7 and the red rooster would be my picks because the red rooster can do 90% of what the 701 can for half the price. Don't get me wrong, the 701 is a phenomenal bike, but it is expensive for a dual sport. My 2 cents :)

    @@JohannesDalen I asked about the T7 because I know he's a owner/fan. I have an Aprilia Toureg 660, which I love for its tubeless tires and cruise control. I've enjoyed your videos on the 701 and I'm contemplating buying a used one for more extreme off-road riding. I'm not nearly as strong and young as you are and worry about picking up my Toureg if solo riding. I figure if you have issues with your earlier T7, then I certainly will with my Toureg, hence my interest in either the Honda CRF or the 701. I like quiet bikes because I'm an old man ; ) My concern is that the Toureg and the 701 are too similar and I'd be better served by much lighter CRF 450L (the 300 Rally is a great bike but I would prefer the suspension of the 450 and the added power).
