It's a traditional folk song dating back at least 100 years.. The origin may be African-American. I remember hearing it as a child over 60 years ago.
Update.... Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci both released their Halloween videos on their Patreons yesterday, Saturday. They are both absolutely beautiful and amazing.
It's a cover, the Hound (Reilly) and the Fox (McKenzie) did a Lullaby album, that's where it's from
First time I heard this song was in an orchestral collection of American folk songs by Aaron Copeland.
This whole lullaby album is great. Adam Chance joins them for Puff, the Magic Dragon, but there isn't a video for that - yet. Another good one is their collab with Jeffrey East on House at Pooh Corner.

I first heard this song in the 1960s by Peter, Paul and Mary. This version takes the harmonies from them.

Mother sang us to sleep with this old lullaby, and I was a child in the 40s. In the 60s, Peter, Paul and Mary sang me to sleep in the dorm and I learned to play and sing it with my guitar. It's a soothing melody around which Reilly, Mackenzie and Tim spun their beautiful harmonies. I still have that guitar.
I'm another one who remembers this from way back, but from a movie, probably in the seventies or even sixties. I wish I could remember which one.

This one was added to my relaxation Playlist before I even finished listening to it for the first time. ( Yes, Tim was one of the reasons. LoL) it is such a beautiful song. Thanks for reacting to this one.
The first time I heard the song was from Kenny Logan. And I believe he instead of saying horses. He's done all the little ponies.
