Unfortunately, this is a tradition in my country and widespread due to misogynistic and patriarchal values. I'm a victim of this myself. In fact, my husband slapped me so hard on my wedding that it bruised my cheek for a week and I had to hide it with concealer. But that was not the last time either. It was the beginning of a lifetime of abuse. I was about to finish my last year in university when my parents emotionally blackmailed me into marrying him. But even more shocking for me is the fact that my mother in law treats me like a slave and encourages him to beat me with a belt/stick and make me kneel on rice outside naked in the sun just because I can literally do no more chores as I'm fully exhausted. I've even had to suffer the trauma of a miscarriage at their hands for which I'm blamed to this day and punished for. My parents know everything but turn a blind eye. My mother consoles me by saying this is the destiny of a woman. I just hate my life and have no escape from this hell of a mansion.
