The ninth and last song for my ”A Life In Black: A Tribute To Johnny Cash” series is here! "Hurt" is originally written by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails). Johnny made a cover of it at the end of his life. That's the version we all know today. The video alone is incredible and has brought tears to my eyes many times now. I did this song in 2016 as well after some rough times in my life. But it didn't feel right if I'd skip doing it again. I have some weird connection to this song that makes feel afraid of singing it, kind of. It was the hardest song to record mentally. But I really love to sing it as well. It makes me feel many things while it brings images to my mind. No one can do it better than Johnny did though, this is purely a honoring of his work. But I anchor my own life to it in a way as well.

@@KaizenNox he's a character from.... Dare I say it. Fanfiction... But he's from a good story called Senran Kagura Darkness. Context is he's a monster hunter and outlaw that got caught in a cycle of nonstop killing and regret at a very young age, 10 I think, and he tells this girl who wants to uphold her family's heritage not to throw her life away pursing something she will one day regret. A friend recommended it to me because I like Soulsborne esque stuff, and although it hurt my pride getting on that site, I can't say I regret reading it. Or bringing myself to love Alan.

Actually Trent hated this.oh well jonn did it better in my veiw..thanks to Rick Ruben for taking on the cash when Capitol records dumped him.

@@mtpockets7352 No, Reznor didn't. The comment I saw from him was comparing it to the feeling of 'seeing someone kissing your girlfriend'. He was upset that Johnny's cover held so much more emotion than his, but never, ever, claimed that it was a bad cover or that he didn't like the cover from a musical standpoint. He was weirded out by the idea of someone else doing their own version of a song that was, to him, a VERY personal song. He also pretty publically acknowedged that Cash definitely owned the song now. He did state he initially 'dismissed' the cover, but also states that the reason for that was that he was rather busy working on his own projects and that it was him watching the associated music video that really made him pay attention.
Bro this man is so underrated it's criminal. 1m hits and less than 100k subs??? cmon lads

@@CDRW24I think the Johnny Cash version is better than the original version IMHO Cash's version has tons more feeling plus you actually believe what his singing, maybe its because people could see and knew he was on his last legs of life which made the song more prominent.
Theres a RDR2 "Logan" style trailer with this song and it is so good and makes me like this song even more

I think Reznor and Cash would be proud. So cleanly performed. I don't think I could do this better in a million years.
Reznor praised Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning", going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore."
It's like I'm cutting fresh onions here. This is perfect.
Beautifully played and sung, Christian. I have to say it lacks the pain and heartache of Cash's rendition, but that's due to the difference in age and life experience, no doubt. This still moved me, especially the last two words. Thanks so much for sharing your talent, bro

I find his voice very technically interesting as it fits so many different genres - grunge, rock, country, etc. - while also being so smooth and honestly calming to listen to, but also like a lot of control. Awesome cover!

When I first saw Reznor perform his song Hurt, I simply impressed. When I heard Cash, and now Larsson, perform it, I realize what a great song Reznor wrote. The lyrics and melody were brilliant, but it was destroyed by the depressive anguish of his interpretation. It may have been an honest and genuine interpretation, but it left me without emotion because of its self-destructive despair. I could only feel a distant pity, the same way you would look at homeless drug addicts on the street. When Cash interpreted the song, he changed the context of the song from one of despair, to one of confession and ownership. In the process he added an element of hope, the kind of hope that comes from confessing the regrets of one's past and taking ownership with courage, and in doing so finding a peace and redemption. I think this is the reason people feel the Cash interpretation more powerfully than Reznor's. People are touched more by courage and hope than simply witnessing despair and self-loathing.

Just goes to democracy that everyone has an opinion. I and many others feel strongly that Cash's version is the most depressing and complete devoid of hope.

True this was really amazing. He sang it perfectly and while he obviously didn't have the emotion in it the way cash did, he didn't need to, he is still young.
