Hurricane Laura sends hotel roof pieces flying

Forecasters predicted damaging winds, and that was not a lie. Ted Oberg gave a play-by-play of roof pieces flying in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

What he says about the sound in old homes is so on point! I rode out Hurricane Ivan in a 1950s home here in FL... the sound was relentless. The back door kept blowing open every so often, house shook the whole time, all in the darkness of the night.

I spent time during ''A Mistral très violent'' in our parent's new house in the side of the hill facing the Sea.. The wind I thought would rip the earthenware tiles from the roof- I closed the wooden shutters, but was really anxious ..I thought the house would be blown apart- but luckily it rode out the Mistral. I know what you mean by house shaking with the force of the gusts...But it was no where near a Hurricane.

2020 has been a very strange year- more extreme weather conditions, all the fires in Australia, then Covid 19, it is deluging with heavy rain here now {England} and there have been some really severe winds this year- The Hurricane over there looks pretty severe.. I feel sorry for those at Sea in these really heavy weather situations, too. USA gets some crazy weather ..We had a Hurricane proper only once, and it was really scary, my back door blew off and Oak trees were torn from their plantations as if matchwood. The Weather {Michael Fish} forecaster poo-phooed a 'Hurricane' and then BOOM, it hit. 19 people died. Here is his infamous boob! {first few seconds} kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKKszLxmkanRmtY.html

Yep. I lived in Florida through that 04 and 05 hurricane season. When Wilma was that monster cat 5 heading our way, it was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced. It held close to 185 mph sustained winds and was bigger than the entire state of Florida. Anyone who has ever driven from Miami out of state knows it's a 6+ hour drive, so this thing was huge. We got lucky, but our luck can't last forever. Once a storm hit the warm waters in the gulf of mexico, someone is getting royally fucked.

I was 7 years old during Hurricane Alicia. We didn’t evacuate. We rode it out in NW Houston. It’s one of my coolest memories. We stayed up all night, ate popcorn, watched the rain, listened to the wind, filled up the bathtubs with water. I got my very own flashlight! My brother and little cousin were 4 and 5. They did fall asleep and I remember waking them up to move them to the center of the house, away from windows. The whole thing was an adventure! Everybody talking about calming their scared children. Y’all coddle kids too much and take away really cool experiences from them. None of my family acted scared or panicked so I had no need to behave that way either. Children feed off of adult’s energy. Seeing a lake outside in the morning was like “Wow! Woah!! This is crazy!!!” It was all a wonderful experience and a good lesson in keeping your cool during an extreme weather situation.

I disagree. It is great you didn't have a bad experience but I grew up in South Lousiana. I have ridden out many storms including Katrina and Gustav. And I was fine. So I felt the same way when the great flood of 2016 hit. We had no flood history on our home so thought we were okay. Evacuating in a metal boat, in the middle of the night with 3 small children who couldn't swim is terrifying. Having to leave my pets behind and hoping they survived(they did) because we couldn't take them with us was awful. It was all very scarring. When we rebuilt our home, we moved the next year out of LA after having lived there my whole life. My family still lives there. But I am so glad we got out of that state and away from the yearly major natural disasters! Natural disasters can turn from fun wind and rain to devastating in minutes. And as a parent who lived through that exact moment, I can say with certainty it is not worth the risk!

I grew up in Tornado alley, so severe weather isn’t something that really scares me. Flooding scares me, because I can’t drive around that. Even if I’m scared, when the weather hits, I go into what I call practical mode, probably because I grew up with severe weather and my dad was a firefighter so he was emergency services. I’ve got his old truck that’s gone through tornadoes and two hurricanes’ floods.

He mentioned no way to calm a child in a hurricane. In 1991 I snuck out of the house in Hurricane Andrew to watch the trash cans and debris flying across the sky. It was amazing. Until my mom caught me and lost her fucking mind. I forgot to close the door. 😆 But the experience was amazing. Trees fell down in a directions, several barely missed the house. The town was wrecked. No road was drivable the first day. Power Lines, trees and debris everywhere. It's obviously terrible if people are hurt but I always enjoy hurricanes when I'm in them. Nature is amazing.

I feel for them and pray for them too. Iowa needed and deserved national news coverage for their land hurricane Derecho April 10, 2020. Our state was devastated and 43% of crops were destroyed which is going to affect the whole country. Amazing you overlooked us. We're Iowa Strong and will survive though. Thanks for all the Linemen and all who did come to bring food and supplies. Thank you to Iowa National Guard, Samaritans Purse and Eight Days of Hope. National News not so much. You don't care about a state that will roll up it's sleeves and help each other when there's no coverage to get more help to come. I pray sincerely for all in this storm to get every conceivable source of help possible but more so protection and safety prior to the storm so they are ok. God bless.

Bobbyjohnny Wesley If geoengineering proposals are to influence global climate in any meaningful way, they must intentionally alter the relative influence of one of these controlling mechanisms of earth solar influence, however to do this would require money that the top five economies don’t have combined. So yeah geoengineering is not possible in this age of human understanding. But If you have a credible source for it, I’m all for reading about stuff like that

The winds were so great.the winds probably knocked out the cameras I had been watching earlier in the night. The last time saw the camera from Cameron, La. water standing to the doors on most buildings. Camera went out after that. Holly Beach went out way earlier than that. So, may be nothing left to it. That is just west of Cameron and have get to it by water.

Uhhh this isn’t where it was going to be very bad! I’m pretty damn sure Lake Charles is underwater & destroyed. There was a camera that was 9ft in the air recording the hurricane but unfortunately was destroyed due to the storm. It’s way too dangerous to go see honestly,
