Hurricane Irma, Jose, and Katia on 9/7/17

Hurricane Irma is a Category 5. Hurricane Jose is a Category 3. Hurricane Katia is a Category 1. The Atlantic is active with Irma being the focus. The Irma track forecast into the weekend looks like it will keep us on the dry, calmer side of the storm but it won’t be calm for much of Florida. Most computer projections show a trough of low pressure arriving from the northwest this weekend to turn Irma toward the north. That means all of south and central Florida is a likely target.
The odds of Irma heading to the News 5 area remain low. Be prepared as you would normally be during hurricane season. By the weekend, we’ll have a better idea of where Irma may go with regard to where we are. It’s over the weekend that we’ll find out when it turns. At the moment we stay on the dry side of Irma, with a northeast breeze this weekend.
Jose is a category 3. That makes it the third major hurricane of the season. It is 1200 miles east of Irma in open waters. It may strengthen more and may also impact the northeastern islands of the Caribbean, before turning northward in the Atlantic and meandering for several days.
In the southwestern Gulf is Hurricane Katia. It will drift southwestward to move into Mexico as a hurricane and rainmaker.
There have been 3 named storms at the same time in the Atlantic before.
The state of the atmosphere can change drastically by then so we watch daily to see what clues models are giving us. That’s why you always have to have a plan, in hurricane season, which runs through November.
WKRG-TV Chief Meteorologist, Alan Sealls

    Stellar reporting. Scientifically sound, no hysteria, no scrolling crap across the screen. This meteorologist is a consummate professional, he explains the graphics and steps through possible scenarios in a way the layman can easily understand. His job is to inform the public, not scare them. It's obvious he takes that seriously.

    Best. Meteorologist. Ever. No hyperbole. No fear mongering. No end of day. Just facts. All of the other styles of over-reporting major storms result in complacency when the storm doesn’t show up. He is the meteorologist this storm needs.

    I'm not from the Florida area, but I found this newscast video on the social media site Reddit, where it has been shared with the title "Best weatherman just released an update on the tripple hurricanes". It is so popular it has recieved 29.9k upvotes and has reached the top front page. This report and this weatherman were so, so educational. The weatherman explained everything so in depth, I feel like I was in a college class, for free. Not only did his report update me on the news, it actually TAUGHT ME how to UNDERSTAND what is going on and what could drive this, as well as how these storms develop, are predicted to land, are charted, and fizzle out or get stronger. I learned about the current hurricanes, but also a ton about hurricanes in general, and I feel this report really expanded my mind. 29.9 thousand other people on Reddit, where someone shared this, agree. Thank you to the weatherman who made this and is reporting here. You really are making a difference and I feel like I gained more than just news from your reporting. I subscribed to the news station that posted this and wish you every luck in your weatherman and reporting career. I hope to see more of your forecasts and clips, even though I live all the way in Texas, because this one was so informational and interesting and mind-expanding and really got me to pay attention to hurricanes, not just as hurricanes, but in terms of how they develop and what we are able to predict. Just had to say this. Thank you! :-)

  • @phonyadmin
    @phonyadmin7 жыл бұрын

    The beauty here is that someone in the station understands what people are really looking for when they look for information on an incoming hurricane. In this situation, people don't want the anxiety-inducing graphic images of past storms. They just want an explanation from someone who knows what they are talking about showing the average american what the weather is going to do, and what affect it might have. Contrast this with the talented entertainers that often present the news on other stations. They are very good at discussing the ferocity of the impending weather system and showing graphic images of the present or past storms, and discussing means of preparation and survival strategies. Nothing wrong with that, but it's refreshing to find a station that, if even just for a segment, puts a non-entertainer on stage to objectively present the information that (presumably) he has worked hard to prepare and is passionate about. Well done WKRG and Alan Sealls.

    Best weather man ever. Other weather men worry about is comparing it to hurricane Andrew and its "record breaking" strength and possible destruction for a debated,trending topic in media and it's really sad. Praying for the people in Florida and still praying for the people in Houston. From Louisiana ♥️

    It's actually pronounced Coh-burn. Fun fact: Olivia Wilde's last name was Cockburn before she got into acting.
