Do fire stations have smoke detectors or something in the apparatus bays?

Given the value of the equipment, I am a little surprised they do not have sprinklers in the fire station, or at least the apparatus bay.

Hahahah you’re funny. There’s currently fire stations in operation built before the invention of electricity, plumbing, and HVAC and have one set of stairs that is as step of climb as Mount Everest.

@@wilson4180 Ever hear of 'retrofit'? It is done all the time, even to old and historic buildings. In my community, following a tragic fire, all apartments over 5 units require sprinklers, regardless of the age of the building. After an earthquake, all commercial buildings had to meet seismic standards, regardless of when the building was built. Both were accomplished through retrofitting the structures. Have a good one!

@@wilson4180 Right. Most home remodels in many areas that are extensive enough are required to install sprinklers. Most all old commercial buildings are required to retrofit before a new tenant can get a license to occupy.... but not the FD??? SMH

@@pzm958 fire stations renovating requires approval of the taxpayers. It’s a process that starts with a proposal, funding, city council, and voting. On top of finding a company who can do through a certified bid list. This is why a lot of fire stations in the USA are in need of renovations.

Modern fire trucks are filled with lithium-ion batteries. Portable radios, flashlights, ventilation fans, portable scene lighting and a wide array of hand-held power tools -- all powered by LI-ION batteries. Not saying that's the cause, but when those things fail they fail hard and fast.

This isn't an uncommon occurrence, however, it hurts on multiple levels

Potentially, an electrical fire in one of the apparatus.

Snarky comments. Fire departments exists to save lives, to save properties and help people in times of need. This looks like a serious fire, not a slight kitchen fire but possibly with the engines. I am glad that, so far, there are no reports of injuries and I wish only the best for all the firefighters.

LACoFD doesn't have any RTXs, KME's and some Pierces only. By all accounts they are thinking Engine 164 caught fire, possibly electrical.

I am wondering if this station had an electric powered fire engine, I saw a video of the fire, and the last bay looked like it was shooting flames towards the other 2 bays. I am that no one got killed

That’s LAFD running EV’s, no EV’s are on order for LACoFD right now, the cause of the fire was likely an electrical failure from engine 164 which happens to be a diesel unit

I remember an old story from the 1970s about an FDNY company that went to a fire and left food cooking on their stove... They got called back, had to do a full attack into their own kitchen and they said they attacked that fire harder than any other they ever fought. Sheer panic. They knew they were already doomed to be known for eternity as the asshats who set their own station on fire; if one guy from one other company got one foot in the door before they controlled it, they'd be the asshats who set their own station on fire and then couldn't put it out themselves.

If you look the building is still there. In fact its largely salvageable too. Tear off the roof, gut the interior, pull up the bay floor, and then pour a new floor, put on a new roof and rebuild the inside and it's good to go. You'll never get the smoke smell out, it's a fire station after all.

Fire station had no Smoke detectors!!! Fire was raging for awhile before the firemen were awaken by a Good Samaritan who banged on the door to the station!!!! It goes to show that keeping al doors closed will keep a nire at bay and if it wasn't for the Samaritan and the fire doors. We would have 11 dead firemen

There are only 3 or 5 per truck. They don't necessarily need the truck but they need the manpower from that truck...

In my 30 years of living never have I seen a firehouse catch fire what were the employees doing sleeping? Or on a call ?
