Hunting with Break Barrel Airguns and Air Rifles : American Airgunner

Спорт

LONG VERSION of American Airgunner Round Table about hunting with break barrel airguns and air rifles with pellets for small game and pest control. Rossi, Jim, Rick and Tom discuss hunting with springers for animals like rats, pest birds, squirrel, rabbit, and raccoon.
Rick Eutsler gives a technique on knowing your skill level with an air rifle. Jim Chapman, the American Airgun Hunter, talks about hunting with scopes.
They talk about what not to do with a springer break barrel air rifle as it relates to the amount of power or energy an air rifle generates on its intended target.
On the Table:
Walther LGV .22 Airgun
Umarex Octane .22 Pellet Rifle
RWS 460 Magnum Air Rifle

I've hunted the past 2 squirrel seasons with a Hatsan 95 in 22 cal and man do I love that rifle. It's super accurate, hard hitting, and not sensitive to how I hold it at all. Hundreds and hundreds of pellets through it and tons of dead squirrels and I've never had to mess with my Hawke scope since the day I zeroed it. I took it out yesterday and was shooting bottle caps off a fencepost at 40 yards leaning against a support column just like I was propped against a tree shooting at a squirrel. I really haven't found a pellet that it doesn't shoot well but of all things it shoots the cheap Crossman Premier pellets the best so it's been a very reliable, and economic squirrel killer. One huge advantage I discovered with air rifles was being able to hunt small patches of woods along the fence line where I would not feel comfortable using a shotgun or 22lr because there's houses near by. But those little patches of woods are loaded with squirrels and with an air rifle they (and the homeowners) never hear anything and the squirrels just keep coming in. One day last year there was a family having a cookout on the next property and they were probably 75-80 yards from the patch of woods I was in. I killed 4 squirrels and nobody even looked in my direction. Had no idea I was there

I have an old Daisy .22 caliber break barrel springer rifle that I have had for over 50 years . It has on it that it was made for Daisy in Scotland and it has the number 250 on it as well . I also own a newer .22 caliber break barrel that has the " nitro " piston . I have not had the chance to do much hunting with either one but I can't wait to try them both out . I know the old one is going to be louder then the newer one because of the actual spring in it that gives it it's power where the newer one is not driven by an actual spring but a piston .

I use a Daisy Powerline 901 (.177cal) for squirrel and bird hunting and it gets the job done. It shoots groups the size of a dime at 15-20 yards (the farthest I'm comfortable taking shots at because beyond that the round starts to drop) and at those distances I can land a headshot and sometimes a heartshot and they never get far. I'm looking into getting a better rifle for winter time for longer shots because the Daisy 901 isn't well suited for long range in the winter. So, I usually stick to picking off squirrels from the bird feeders or porch that time of year.

With the internet, I find I like many people from all over the world, (looking from and doing business from the USA). It is just our primitive barbaric leadership in almost every nation, who I despise. How about we all use our minds and do business with each other,--and tell the dictators, (who produce nothing but poverty), to get lost? :)

How come you fine fellas did not mention the .30 cal. (Hatsan). I am finally getting great groups with it, and over 33 fpe with a little skirt mod I do, (I call it "flairing", it seals the bore better, also adds greatly in speed consistency). I have seen Jim knock down rabbits, and claim they just fall over with the gun like no other springer. I am now getting 4 shot 1.75" groups at 75 yards, but at 50 yards, (better groups yet of course), I am sure it has more energy than any other springer. I want to try Turkey and Coyote in under 50 yards, (still flying at 25 fpe?), so I wished you guys would have talked about that caliber a bit. Great shows men! You too Rossi. :)

I use an Air Arms S510 in .22 and a Walther Rotex RM8, I charge my gun from an Air Force 1 dry compressor but I also have a 7 litre tank if I am going away from home. I have been a hunter and pest controller for 50 years. Here in the UK if you want to go up above 12 ft lbs you have to apply for a Firearms License which is utterly ridiculous because the conditions required to get a licence makes it almost impossible to satisfy the requirements. I would prefer a .303 Daystate Red Wolf blowing 100 ft lbs. of course the upside is we have to be pretty damned good to hit the target in the right place first time.

Yeah. Squirrels and rabbits only take some 3FPE in the head to kill. Some of the .177cal ultra magnums I have, like the Winchester 1250WS & Crosman GuideHawk NP will just reach out a bit further with heavier pellets. And the 1250WS is a springer. But all three of my Break Barrel .25's are gas piston. I've seen picks of pig kills by my buddy's using .25cal break barrels that went 67lbs to 100lbs+. You have to practice to get consistent head shots. That's the key.

Including cigarrete buts bbs excetra with snap shots. I guess I was basically so practiced I was a quick shot. My Dad and Brother could never understand how I aquired and shot so fast. And still tank my targets, like nearly never missing. Wich is funny because with a shotgun, my dad would have to birds down before you could get your gun off of your shoulder, hunting quail and chucker without a dog. That why I got me an Irish Setter.

American Airgun Hunter - Jim Chapman I recall a hunt where Jim took a jackrabbit at 44 yards with a .177 Beeman(Webley & Scott) C1 I was impressed with the range(Jim's & the rifles) and accuracy(again, both) Rifles such as the C1 and FWB-124 are among my favorites for small game(rabbit) but, I don't trust my ability much beyond 30 yards, so Jim's taking one at 44 made an impression. The point is, if you're capable, an accurate, air rifle in the 12-13ft-lb range certainly is.

The big wigs need to get air guns more widely accepted for hunting in more states, otherwise, most of us have zero reasons to have anything more than our trusty springers. Not sure if this matters to you but I think they meant in.177. Anyways When I got my first springer it was in .177 and I took body shots that killed them but sometimes they grabbed the tree and hung on dead. When I started head shots they spasmed with their legs flying out and they fell right out. Had a time or two trying to get a dead squirrel hanging from a branch with body shot.

So after researching a lot I've really not come up with an overall good fit for SHTF small game/varmint hunting in regards to air rifles. Compare reviews between Amazon/Cabellas/KZread and one will say a certain rifle is amazing, the same rifle on the other site says it's total crap. Can you suggest a great and VERY durable air rifle that does not require CO2? I would be willing to buy two rifles for different purposes if you can't suggestion just one, I would like it/them to be reasonably priced, but I'm willing to spend several hundred each to get something with a proven track record of being durable.

Airguns that use a coiled spring to push a piston are what we call springers. Some call those with gas pistons springers too based on the premise that a gas piston "uncoils" if you will to push the piston forward and the air out behind the pellet.

  • @EarthSurferUSA

    @EarthSurferUSA

    5 жыл бұрын

@@americanairgunner A metal coil spring is only one kind of spring. A leaf spring for example, probably would not work will in a airgun, but an air spring does. I don't base a air/gas spring on a concept of "uncoiling", and have no idea if a actual metal spring "uncoils" as it does not twist like a garage door coil torsion spring, (the old tension coil springs do not twist, but only contract). It is the action of the spring that makes it a spring, (and different springs do have different actions, but not in springer airguns for forward motion only), so a gun that uses a piston for forward motion, is a springer, but they have different springs. If the gun has a piston that releases to push the pellet with ambient air, it has to be classified as a springer, but with knowledge that different types of springs are used.

I think that perhaps for sub 12ftlb air rifles .177 is better, it has a flatter trajectory and is closer to .177 max co-efficiency of roughly 18ftlb. .22 co-efficiency is around 22ftlb, on sub 12ftlb .22 sometimes a rabbit/squirrel/bird can actually see the pellet coming and move out of the way. I would be interested to read other people's opinions on this as I'm no expert. Respect to all, JC

Seen a video where, he used a Gamo G-Magnum Jungle .22 and shot three hogs in the head face on just above the eyes and all three dropped on the spot, the distance was with in 20 yd, and he said he would not shoot a hog a beyond that distance, they were on the smaller size. He was using a penetrating round, can't remember what he was using other than it was a penetrating pellet. I have a Gamao Varmint in .177 and am amazed what that will go through. I use it for rats and small squirrels, and so far always dropped on the spot. I do keep my shots with in 20yd. I have it sighted in at 15 yards and get dime size groups. I am trying to get a Gamo G-Magnum Jungle.22 Cal but hard to fine hear in the east coast of Canada. I like the spring over the gas. had one gas and it leaked right out of the box and had trouble returning it and it was not even 24 hours. Pluss I can fix a springer, if it dose give me trouble.
