    Hey Randy, this episode of OYOA must be a few years old despite being posted in 2016. I noticed you are shooting a Savage rifle and you are wearing a Federal Premium hat. When did you make the transition to Howa rifles and Nosler ammo?

  • @Fresh_Tracks

    Started using Howa in 2010 and been shooting Nosler bullets for decades. Much of the Federal ammo I shot had Nosler bullets, such as AccuBonds and E-Tips. Officially started working with Nosler in 2014.

    How is it public land if there are fence lines?

  • @Fresh_Tracks

    @Fresh_Tracks

    Because there are allotment fences all over on public lands. Those fences separate the public land grazing allotments. And there are fences along the boundaries between public and private.

    Hey Randy, let's go huntin', I live in pocatello, southeast idaho. I haven't seen any episodes about southeast idaho. I got my elk and my deer, 2 minutes apart, 10 yards from each other, with my bow, on opening day last year, surrounded by private land, by myself. let's do a hunt together?.?.?.

    People like you Randy have ruined the Custer National Forest with videos like this. Instead of maybe giving your direct location, maybe stick to just saying it's public land in Montana. It's ruined the hunting for us local people who use the forest for more than just hunting. It has decimated the population (deer and elk) and has made it almost impossible to find a mature buck. I'm all for hunting public land, but quit making it easy for everyone. Make them use their time and resources to find these locations themselves. It will take year beyond year to build what we had over here with a majority of mature bucks and a quality number of deer. Thanks for nothing. Concerned public land hunter in South Eastern Montana.

  • @Fresh_Tracks

    @Fresh_Tracks

    That's some funny stuff. I had a limited entry deer tag elsewhere in MT this year, so I couldn't hunt the Custer, though a lot of friends did. They found plenty of mature deer, though fewer than last season due to a very hard winter of 2017-2018. Didn't know I was responsible for the tough winters that knock down deer numbers every 6-10 years, as it has predictably since I started hunting there 25 years ago. Ask any person who is familiar with the population cycles there and they will tell you it is weather more than anything; weather like was present last winter. As for telling people where to go, I don't give drainages or GPS coordinates. If you think the Custer and SE Montana is some newly found secret, you haven't followed hunting magazines for very long, Back in the 1990s a popular magazine from WY printed many articles about it, did some TV shows there, and recommended the area in their research service. Yet, now Randy Newberg is to blame for ruining Region 7, and area of over 14 million acres. I've not hunted elk there since 2009, so not sure how I ruined the elk hunting. You suppose the increased interest in elk hunting had something to do with a world record archery elk taken in 2016? Couldn't be. Given both archery and rifle are on a limited entry draw with bull tag numbers staying very similar for many years, not sure how I could have ruined the elk hunting under those limited tag conditions. If the increase in cow tags is the problem, you might want to take that up with FWP. Best of luck to you.

    I understand that there will be tough winters, that's just nature taking it's course. I am very familiar with the population cycle and this was the worst I and MANY local people have ever seen it. You don't think the additional hunters, who are able to purchase 5 additional mule deer doe tags helps? I had a friend who drove by someones camp who had over 24 deer hanging in it. And they still had tags to fill. I'm not saying the Custer is some new found secret, but out of all the hunting shows I've watched people only say they're in Montana on public land, not giving directions. The elk hunting has been ruined by the additional hunters on the forest. All these additional hunters pushes all of the game to inaccessible private land. I live and know people all around this area who have been hunting the forest for 20 plus years saying this is the worst they've ever seen it. I'm really curious to who your friends are who have seen mature bucks, because not a single person I know saw anything. Thankfully most people around here will pass on smaller bucks giving them the chance to grow, but there wasn't any small bucks to pass up, because there isn't any deer. This is the first time I have never seen an elk down there. I have multiple people say the same. Hopefully our state decides to manage the issuing of tags better to help manage the population but right now, pointing an arrow to Custer national forest and saying there is successful hunting is not helping. I myself, thankfully hunt deer elsewhere. I find hunting the Custer national forest with 1000 other people a tad time consuming. Though I do enjoy your channel and like your approach with public land hunting. Just wish you didn't hold a sign up and tell everyone where to go. Thanks
