Hunting history in hidden places. A modest mudlarking and beachcombing adventure.

I've barely begun to explore all the hidden and hard to get to parts of where I live; I have found though that it's fun finding old things in new places.

I will never understand some human beings , to go to such a beautiful place as the Riverside , watch the babbling water , see the lovley wildlife then chuck in a an old bike to rust away , they must be monsters ! Thank you for doing your little bit of cleaning up as you go , if only everyone did what you do , I do realise that some of the rubbish comes from old Victorian dumps but a lot of it is modern and we all should know better , and all learn to tread a little softer on this earth , thank you Tom , t's lovley to see you care ! 😊

  • @tomburleigh9261

I suspect most of the bikes get chucked in off bridges and over walls, there are many in this area which wall off the river and make it so that it's largely out of sight, and out of mind. I do see some good progress being made away from mass consumerism, and towards eccological protection; but it's slow going... and there's already so much to clean up. What I do is small, but it hopefully inspires others to do a small amount too 🙂

I'll remember all that for next year, it's a bit too woody already... and already seeding; so it's a bad idea for me to disturb it myself as I would be breaking the law if I carried any seeds away with me and caused any spread of it. Tom Burleigh it always does! I had to comment before watching full through, for a chance to be first comment. Probably my one and only time! Luck is all pure luck. Not sure why being first is important yet some make a big deal over it. The little figure with no head and rounded belly could be a frozen Charlotte doll. I wonder if the kneeling lady praying is praying for her head?

I did wonder if it might be, but it looks like finer craftsmanship than any other Frozen Charlotte doll I've found. Still could be, I don't know. I had a similar thought about the kneeling lady... poor thing. Congratulations on getting the first comment in ;)

A "Bottom on the bottom"! I love your commentary, you should be making Audio books, with that charming voice. Awesome finds, I love the blue and white ceramics. The dreaded Knotweed! New England is infested too!. My husband has to battle a patch in my neighbor's yard that is threatening to come through the fence. In fact there is a strip of it growing in a line through the middle of our neighborhood. We have it surrounded - manicured lawns and gardens and this in our midst. If we all got together, we could eradicate it en masse. I can just see it. I would play the "Giant Hogweed" song by Genesis on the loudspeaker from the little church, as we all march to our back yards with torches and pitchforks (for instagram and facebook) . And a backhoe of course, shoveling would be too hard.

Thank you, I have plans for a second youtube channel where I read stories.... just have to get a decent mic, some appropriate footage, and get started. Knotweed is indeed a tenacious monster of a plant, I like your dramatic flare for dealing with it. The backhoe would work... if the soil is then carefully sifted and no seeds allowed to escape. Good luck with the upcoming the battle; Cry 'Havoc!, and let slip the dogs of war.

Always make sure you dont take any mud with you as you can carry knotweed seeds out with you, there is a very big fine if it is proved that you have spread it to other places. My advice is to stay well clear of any knotweed. You have to remember if you take it home with you and it seeds itself in your garden your house will become worthless buyers will run a mile. Just a heads up your videos are very good and i enjoy them just be careful as there are big fines and in some cases can lead to a prison sentence.

Thanks pbcoupons, I like larking for lots of reasons... the excercise, finding interesting old things, the free things to use in art projects, and the sometimes quite valuable things; getting out into nature and feeling myself recharge; the discipline and structure it's bringing into my work, and the diversion it's given me from something of an obsession I was growing with the theatre show that is current American politics. I have seen a few Asian fishing floats videos from Alaska... they're quite beautiful things, but I'd take the trip to Alaska myself if I could rather than buying a few; I've always wanted to go to Alaska.🙂

@pbcoupons Why larking? I'm old-ish now & infirm, but if I could go back in time there's only one thing I'd love to do again: sit by my stream in the fruited woods near where I grew up. Glaciers had brought down many beautiful stones and ochre, and it was a haven for wildlife. Tunnelized now and built over, it's gone forever... and barren :-(
