Hunting FRIGID Weather for Rabbits (WITHOUT A DOG) | 28 GAUGE Public Land Rabbit Hunting 2021
Спорт
On a frigidly cold day, Matt heads out with his 28 gauge to do some public land rabbit hunting in the fresh snow. He wasn't sure what to expect but it turned out to be another great day out hunting.

@@HighPrairieSportsmen Great hunt though!
Thank you for this video. It took me back to Christmas 1970 when I received my first .410. Dad took me rabbit/quail hunting and, like you did, flushed a rabbit for me out of a thicket of downed tree and briars. Unfortunately, I was not paying careful attention and only got off a shot as the rabbit jumped over a log. Even so, it was a great day that I'll always treasure!

Pretty amazing to watch you waltz into a coyote kitchen and score 6 bunnies! I've never done more than three in a day, but you and I hunt very differently. I'm a slow-stalking still hunter and do not cover as much ground. I've never had any luck making noise on purpose either, so it was fun to see it work for you! Thanks for braving the cold and giving us a little entertainment!

@@DLXSKIFFMITCHELL Excellent! An acquaintance of mine recently picked up a 20ga Viper and his kid is doing competition trap with it. So far, so good. I too, would only put about a box per year down the barrel. Thanks for the response and helping a guy make up his mind
No. 6 lead is they right way to go in my opinion. thats what i shoot in my 20 GA. for rabbit. Didn't look like you had any trouble jumping them. but if you find you having difficulty make some noise and then stand still for a minute, in my experience that tends to make them nervous and run more often. great video. i live vicariously through your duck and goose hunting videos b/c WNC waterfowl hunting is almost non existent but we rabbit hunt a lot, always with beagles though.

Thanks for the tip! Definitely a fun time! I bet with dogs would be a blast.
As a boy dad started me with a 410 narrowed bolt action. Killed my first rabbit running across an old bog. And what did he say hollered at me for not letting the dogs run him. So I never shot again that day. As an adult I only used the 28 GA for all small game its a hard hitting round for sure. T will get geese in the air above the trees but now ya have to use steel shot.

@@tomodonoghue3309 I have to agree. For the terrain and method of hunting on this day, a shotgun makes for a wiser choice. I take 6-15 cottontails annually around my property. If I'm walking, those bunnies are running. If I'm porch sitting or sitting on a stump, a rimfire is nice and easy, and clean! Those still shots are nice when they land in your lap but the runners, nothing beats a spread of #6 BBs.

@@bigeclipse718 Who wants to eat more BBs? I started out with a 12ga, stepped back to a 20ga, and it was better, but still more spread than I desired. Stepped down to 410, and that was great, but I started missing more too. Bought a 28ga and I've never looked back. If my intent is to simply kill, I'll grab a 20, 16, or 12, but when I want meat, I reach for that 28 most often. IMO, 28ga is the most overlooked, enjoyable, and underrated shotgun load out there. If more people would get into them, we could drive the ammo prices down! Online, it can be found for only a little more than 20 or 12 loads, but lately it's less than 16 or 410 by quite a bit! If you've never carried a 28, you might not understand the attraction until you do. It's just a hoot, and incredibly effective!

To err is human... don't be too hard on the lad. However, there are times in which I carry a 22LR pistol on the hip when I have a shotgun in my arms, and this kind of scenario is exactly why. If I wound an animal, I do everything I can to sneak in close and finish it with a shot to the head. Full disclosure, it doesn't happen much, hardly ever, but I've had to do it three times over the last 40+ years and it always feels good to know I'd come prepared. Wounded animals = wasted meat, so I try to end it quickly for the animal and save as much as I possibly can for the table. Happy hunting!
