Hunting deer with Randy Newberg - Montana One-day Whitetail (S4 E10)

Ойын-сауық

Hunting with Randy Newberg takes you on a Montana Whitetail Deer hunt. Randy has no more than two days between trips and tries to fill his Montana deer tag on a small piece of public land where rutting whitetails tend to travel.

Nice buck for the freezer Randy. It is easy to underestimate a whitetail's energy and will to travel, glad you persisted and found him- kudos for not shrugging and deciding to try for another like so many do. Excellent episode, good hunt.

This is a great example of how an animal doesn't always bleed right away, especially on a great shot like that. It's always worth the tracking effort if you're confident in the shot. I had a cow Elk, shot right through the heart, run 100 yds in the snow, without a drop of blood. Then she just tipped over dead. Good hunt.

VFR Simulations Yup, I've seen it too. Shot a nice buck at just over 200 yards from a very stable position with a bipod. It definitely looked like I hit it. And just knowing that especially from a very stable stance and a rifle and scope which have never let me down. I didn't think I could possibly miss the shot. The buck took off down hill into some thick stuff, out of my line of sight. After an hour and a half searching, I finally found a smog of blood. Took another half hour to find some more, then the buck was 20 feat away in some thick brush. It was almost exactly like Randy went through. The shot took the lungs out and the top of the heart. But for some reason, it was a downhill shot, the exit wound plugged up with fatty tissue. And he bless out mostly internally. Frustrating as hell. I kept thinking the same, " How the hell could I have missed that shot, etc. But that's just the way it goes hunting. Sometimes the drop right there, even with a shot that was far from perfect. Then you can hit them smack on, and they take off making you track them for a couple hours. Lucky it wasn't late in the evening. Cause if I would have had to come back in the morning the yotes would probably be full.

Randy I like you as a hunter. You do what everyone in the USA could do. You bring it up front to everyone like you have known us all our lives and that is what I like about what your do. To me you take it to a personal level that none of the other hunters on KZread or TV do. If I could hunt with anyone I could it would be you hands down whether I harvested an animal or not. The knowledge I would learn would be worth the time it took for the hunt.

I really enjoy your videos Randy. I hunt in California and had a very similar experience with a black tail buck this past season. My good friend Alec was watching as I shot the buck and he saw a reaction from the shot. We found no blood and continued in the direction the deer ran after the shot. We found the buck dead on a game trail 80 yards from where I hit him. Not one drop of blood the whole trail .When I removed the entrails I found that the bullet had taken off the lower half of his hart.

Randy, great job on the tracking job. I had a similar thing happen on Kodiak Island with a Sitka Blacktail, and the results weren't as good. Unfortunately, it was a September hunt, and there was no snow to track the deer in. I believe from the deer's reaction that I scored a solid hit, but upon the shot he headed straight into an alder hell hole. I looked and looked, but I was unable to turn up any blood. I could lie to myself and say that I didn't hit the deer, but I probably did, and he probably turned into a brown bear's dinner. It's not a good feeling.

Just by looking at the reaction of the buck after the shot I would bet the bullet used was an Etip... I realize this is aweful presumptuous of me but I had to give up mono's because of too many perfectly hit animals traveling to far after being hit. Too much of a good thing with a low velocity cartridge can be a bit of a handycap. Gotta love those Partitions and Accubonds though and for deer its hard to beat the good old Ballistic tip. Thanks for the AWESOME videos Randy. I can't get enough of them. If the bullet was a regular leaded fella, I'll go eat my other foot!

Thanks for watching. Since they are rutting hard, go and find the ridges or edges along which the bucks are making scrape lines. Sit near those scrapes and bucks will come by. It will range from boring to crazy busy, but they will eventually come by your position and offer a shot. Good luck.

Bit of a story, but I'll try to keep it brief. This episode hit home for me... I'm glad you got him. I've killed a bunch of deer, but never completely on my own. Which is fine, I appreciate the camaraderie of deer camp. Nevertheless, I've always wanted to hunt, shoot and drag out a deer 100% unassisted. I was on a Moose/Deer combo hunt a few years ago in mid-November, the road in was closed and I didn't have a boat, so that meant a three or four mile hike in. I spent the day without seeing a thing, then with about an hour of light, I flipped my can bleat, just for fun and out comes prancing a tall 3x3, a good buck for the area. He was 65 yards, just across the creek. I had about four seconds to decide it was a buck and shoot, I rushed the first shot, the shot broke in front of his brisket. He jumped backwards and stopped behind a spruce sapling. I tried to thread the brush through the sapling on the second one and he disappeared. I thought for sure he was piled up on the ground. I formulated a plan to float him down the creek whole to the river, quarter him up, and then walk out to get a canoe. After 45 minutes of nervous contemplation I crossed the creek to collect a dead deer that didn't exist. Until that day I had never clean missed a deer, but as they say, it happens to the best of us. I couldn't believe it. I still can't but it was 100% my fault, I rushed both shots. I'll never forget it. I got trail cam pictures of him the following year and my cousin shot him that fall. One day, I'll get it done. I promise.

Hey Randy, I am going to hunt deer or elk in montana this year, either with my bow or rifle, and my home state idaho, pocatello idaho. I was just wondering if you could make a recommendation of some units that I don't have to draw for, otc. I will be by myself as Well. This will be my first time hunting anything outside of idaho. I would love to get a chance at a nice whitetail, I have never even seen one in the wild... I'm not asking for a secret spot but, just for a couple units that won't kill me to get in there by myself and would have a fairly high chance of success or seeing a lot of game anyways...

You have to apply by March 15th for the non-resident deer or deer/elk combo tag. Once you draw, almost all the state is open for deer and a large portion open for elk, all with the general tag you will have.

+Randy Newberg, Hunter A friend of mine shot a buck and almost all the blood ended up in a giant sub-dermal hemorrhage. Apart from a bit of lung blood coming out the nose, all the bleeding ended up in a big gooey clot in a pocket under the skin. You couldn't even see the entry wound. It's a good thing he fell almost where he was shot because we would have had no blood to follow either. It ruined a fair bit of the rib meat, and to this day we wonder if it was just unlucky shot placement or unusually loose skin or something. It did have a lot of fat on it, maybe that's what gave it somewhere to bleed internally. The video is on my channel if you're interested, but unfortunately I was too busy with bloody hands to film the gut out.

It is a clip from a different Montana hunt when I did have a camera guy. We have tons and tons of footage from nine years of filming, so often times a b-roll clip will be used from a prior hunt in the same area. Good catch. Thanks for watching.

Question for you Randy. Would a 7mm 08 be a good rifle for out to 600 yards for Whitetail deer hunting. In the area I hunt. Is VERY flat and Big hills when they are there. I hunt Mule Deer and Whitetail out here. It's in Central Washington to help get an idea

Thor_tK At that distance you might be better off with a 7mm mag

I have thought about that before but. I am pretty recoil sensitive and small stature. Thanks for the response. Trying to schedule my first elk hunt ever. Planning on going after some Roosevelt Elk

Do you ever hunt/film in Idaho?

Allen H. I asked him that a few months ago. Said the reason they don't hunt Idaho often is because idaho's controlled hunt draw results always come last so they usually already have a full schedule. Also said he was doing a nov archery deer hunt this year though. Would be awesome if they more here

Randy, I was wondering if you were testing some new ammo on that hunt? Usually everything you shoot with a 165-180 grn in 308 leave lots of blood.

Ryan bird - I have many .308 Win. I also use a .270 Win, a 7mm-.08, .300 Win Mag. Those cover 90% of my hunts. Other calibers will work good also, those are just the ones I've grown fond of.

I'm a big fan of Howa, for many reasons. I've never owned a Savage, so I don't have any useful comment on their rifles.

Hey nice to watch your videos again. I unsubscribe because you lost your prey after taking a unethical shot and made me very upset for the reason that it's a waste of meat and beautiful animal. I'm here to give you a chance please get those shots behind the shoulder or at least take a ethical and clean shot. Keep up the great progress.

  • @Fresh_Tracks

Hmmm. Not sure what was the unethical shot. Most likely a shot where I just failed to perform according to the standards I hold for myself. I am not like others who will try to hide what happens. I've lost three animals in 40 years of hunting. When I lose one, I punch my tag and quit hunting, as I don't feel I should hunt for another animal just because I failed to perform. Thanks for watching.
