It's pretty common for games from the early 2000's to fall through the cracks, as they aren't quite modern, but not quite retro. #HunterTheReckoning most definitely falls into that category. Based off the pen and paper #RPG of the same name, Hunter takes us into the world of darkness where supernatural monsters are held at bay by select people given the powers to fight them. Here in the Hunter the Reckoning Retrospective, I plan on doing my best to get some more eyes on this incredibly underrated series.

@@seb24789 Same chance as getting a Mage: The Ascension game. VTM has always been a fan-favourite and has a steady consumer base. HTR is, well, WoD for beginners. It's a shame that White Wolf didn't give this IP so much attention since it could bring us an Uwe Boll trashy flick to compliment that shlocky Kindred: The Embraced TV series .

This game with 4 players was an absolute blast as a kid.
I saw my cousins and nephew play this as a child and it haunted me for years and I couldn't remember the name until I got help from Yahoo Answers. All I could remember, and this was the scene that scared me, was a girl in a church, her teddy bear turns into a demon monster and kills her and then you have to fight it. I played very child friendly games growing up so seeing such violence in a game just immediately turned me off from horror games at that point. Years later and I love horror, go figure. I also always thought it was a shooter game until now so thanks for that.
Ah yes, the golden age of gaming, the good old days when you could play games with your friends on one console with one copy. 4 player couch coop, imagine the travesty that must be to the ears of game industrialist nowadays.

I was a big Judge fanboy. What I love about the character when a person believing in creationism in a supernatural or cyberpunk setting. A warrior spirit that uses a piercing light to defeat monsters. I loved Judge and how he was not the kind of religious character that is over the top. He is a good character because he isn't a cynical rationalist that Avenger turned out to be. Normally a religious character are written to be corrupt and morally repulsive characters. But Judge is not called or criticised as naive for holding a holy foundation. I think something else is how Judge has the best default spell in the entire game. It can obliterate mobs and bosses while Avenger and Martyr have to self buff themselves for melee combat. Avenger and Martyr are risky because in melee fighting a mob and lack of stun animations means they can get torn apart for noobs. I think Martyr's spell should have an increased amount of hit stun because Avenger's flat damage buff is better, while Martyr could provide ultility. Judge had a general edge over the other Hunters for the early game. Once I got used to the combat system of Hunter. I grew to appreciate Avenger and Defender.

alright man, kudos. i watched your entire RE retrospective series and because of it i'm replaying the entirety (including several titles i never played because i didn't have the consoles i needed. hurray to the "remaster/re-release generation of now). it was awesome. you did great work. but now... you're doing HUNTER? my favorite gauntlet-style that nobody except my two best friends in middle school had ever heard of? bruh. it took us three weekends in a row of sleepovers to finish this one up and we loved it. i was just sad that by the time i got my hands on redeemer we had all moved on and didn't play as much together.

I had a similar experience with my brother. Glad other people love this series as much as me! Also, happy to inspire people to check out some Re games. That's the best compliment I could get.
also, for the record, the gamecube version was pretty much identical to xbox, but with the omission of a taunt button. also, in four player, this game gets exponentially harder. it seems there is a damage downscale effect that occurs when you add in other players. we never managed to beat this game with a full squad despite several attempts, but i could clear it solo with 10+ lives just about any time i tried.

Finally, someone acknowledges how underpowerred the PS2 is, espeacially when compared to the X-Box. This game is a masterpeice. Everyone I meet wants to play lt, even lf we only played lt once ten years ago. It has THAT much appeal. And the damned soundtrack is so amazing.

Man I grew up hesitantly playing this as the Judge, with my older brother as the Martyr. So much fun but I was constantly terrified. Every once in a while I'll remember Carpenter shouting, "YOU... YOU FUCKING SHEEP!" and it'll be at the most random times of my life. That twist though when he looses his shit is awesome though.
I loved these so much. I was obsessed with squeezing every last thing from each character. So many hours.
Hunter was one of my favorite games in the old X-Box! My favorite character was the Martyr. I loved just mowing down enemies with her dual pistols. Also, one time, my friends wanted to turn on friendly fire and fight each other. I just asked them, "Are you sure?" and they laughed. I then activated Retribution and stood still and slaughtered them both. They didn't want to try that again. Also, in Wayward, the second game for the PS2, the Edges that give you passive buffs (like speed or melee damage) could stack as long as you could use it again before the effect wore off. By myself, again as the Martyr, I could stack Demand up to 3 times before the first one wore off! Since her outfit and hair are blue in that game, I called her Sonic the Hunter, and she could really move!
Great pick brother.I played the PS2 one growing up and absolutely loved it. I'm looking forward to your video on that. Keep up the good work!

That's what ya boy does best
Like most tabletop games, this game was made for co-op. You can solo it, but it's brutal. I mained the Martyr, and was basically the team's sheep-dog and the unofficial tank in boss fights. I would run circles around the zombie hordes with my weak but rapid fire pistols constantly staggering the ones on the outside of the group. Circling them, I'd end up shoving them into a ball. My brother always played the Avenger, and he would just charge through the cluster swinging his axe. In a boss fight, I'd activate Retribution and stand in its face slashing with knives. That Edge makes you invincible for a short time, while reflecting damage you would have taken back at the enemies. The Defender was the strongest at a range, and the only healer. A friend of mine liked to play her during co-op. She made playthroughs so much easier. The Judge was second worst at everything, but had the ability to one-shot vampires, gargoyles, and large crowds of trash enemies. He was the only "blasty" spell caster. Super useful to have. Outside of boss fights, he put in a lot of work. During a boss fight, he was just sorta there, lol. He'd blow through his mana and then just have his crossbow to rely on, so I usually let whoever was playing him grab some of the nicer ammunition weapons. Whenever we came across stat upgrade runes, we'd double down on what our strengths were. Ranged damage for the Accuracy for the Defender, Strength for the Avenger, Conviction for the Judge, and Speed for the Martyr. So we could continue to do our jobs well. I beat it solo before as the Martyr, and it was so satisfying grabbing all the upgrades and actually having good damage added to her amazing fire rate, lol. One tip I think a lot of people don't realize to help with the melee combat: If you push the aiming control stick the same direction you're running and do a melee attack, you'll do a running attack. You won't stop moving, helping you avoid enemy attacks that could stagger you, and you do a quick one-two swipe. With the Avenger, you turn into a lawn mower as you charge through a room. This is a game where staying in motion definitely helps, like bullet hell games, so slashing as you keep running makes melee combat much more viable.
Listen here Mr. Avalanche, I just recently came across your channel while looking for some Dead Space crap to listen to and I’ll tell ya every single video has been top notch. Thank you for your work, these are all masterpieces.
You talking about how you and your brother saw this game back in the day on a block buster shelf brings me back. Same story with me and my brother. We used to play gauntlet dark legacy as well together. Good times.

I remember playing this with my brother and cousins in 4 player co-op. We never beat the game or got that far. We got to the point when we had to fight vampires and couldn't get past them because they were so tough to fight. We all eventually just kinda stopped playing because we couldn't beat the vampires and just kept dying. One day i continued playing by myself. Then I realized how OP the priest was against vampires because his crossbow could 1 shot them and instantly kill them. Wish I would have known that ahead of time lol.

Ughhhh so much fun! And it can be harder at some points because everyone can only heal once if you have 4 players at a heal spot- and everyone is running different directions and you can only be so far away from your party 😂 Loved this video ❤️ Everything was Spot. On.
Funny enough this game has been ingrained in my brain ever since I saw my uncle play this game on his original Xbox. The possessed teddy bear was the moment in question and for the life of me for the longest time I had no idea what the name of the game was until today.
Wow! Good next choice of series. I used to love this game!
Took me a long ass time finding the title to this. Carpenter was my 1st Gamertag. Kept finding bandaged characters on more popular games. That voice was epic. I wanted my brother to actually play with me then but he wouldn't time his attacks, do them at the right angles and make sure the enemy was bundled into a group just right for maximum effect. Id get so pissed at him 😆 had one of the last feelings of 90s era darkness. Tales from the crypt, Spawn, Blade, Mortal Kombat, Alien, Maxx, wishmaster, scarey movies in general and then underworld, queen of the damed movie and this in my teens.

Looking forward to the entire retrospective. Playing this on the Xbox One X at native 4K is pretty sweet...though I haven't had a chance to play any co-op with it on the X.
