Stupid Gilliam probably having an ego trip and wanting to "maintain control over the project" or something similar. The take Hunter wanted was honestly much better and more poignant. I see it as old Hunter trying in vain to return to his lost youth and anonymity. Being young and lost in the crowd. He lamented about his fame saying "I used to be able to be in the background and cover the story, now I'm part of the story." Honestly lost respect for Gilliam after this. Should have honored Thompsons wishes and used the take that he preferred. The whole thing is based on his work after all.

1965. The great San Francisco acid wave. I recall one night in a place called the Matrix. There I was. Mother of God, there I am! Holy fuck! Uh...clearly I was a victim of the drug explosion - a natural street freak, just eating whatever came by.

They should've made the flashback scene look and feel more like 1965 because the Hippie Scene didn't start to occur until mid to late 1966, and then by 1967.. that's when entire Hippie Counterculture went into full swing.

These days you'll catch people who own the book yet have only seen the movie and haven't given any of Hunter's other works a try. He's essentially become to drug culture what Sid Vicious was to punk.

Love that they showed the flashback scene. When Duke turns around in the film and sees himself, he goes, "Holy shit, that's me!" (and in a way, it actually is), I laugh out loud every time.

The 70's and most of the 80's were a fear and loathing run for myself and my friends. I thank Hunter for his inspiration, I was never hit or arrested.

God, high school drop out, fresh ged, no job, blasted on acid mescaline drunk maybe a little dxm, driving through the city trying to keep it all together while your friend is comatose in the passenger and the plastic skeleton you got from the side of the road is making fuck me eyes at you then bam tunnel vision world goes black and white, wakes up, he's talking i can't understand him, where are we? out of the car, pissing in the round a about. and then the "weed" kicked in, that wasn't weed but it made a nice addition to the high seeing colours that don't exist, where did the sky go? My high school years were a trip, literally. Surprised I survived as well.

Man highschool was wild! good times, haven't been so much around since, dropped out at 16 tho but i don't regret it. I rather life like an idiot then die of boredom. I'm 20 now still a lot of shit to do I guess but yeah times are crazy atm.

Today I looked up what college he got his "doctorate" from, and it turns out he's a high school drop out =). Still one of the greatest American minds of all time. RIP

Hashish, Hash oil and extracts existed as far back as the 70s, they just weren't common. It takes a lot of work to process marijuana into concentrates, which is even harder when it was all illegal. Packing the plant into bricks was a much more economic option

I'm a creep not Vietnam but I did live in India for 3 months so I have experienced many honks 😊 I meditate and practise yoga which helps my state of mind from over reacting to external stimuli, like hunter did here, but he’s older here and older people are known to be highly irritable, also excessive drug use increases irritability, paranoia, etc, But love me some Hunter 👏🏻🤙🏻

What a crazy scene at the end, hunters favorite. Though it didn’t make the cut it’s crazy to see that was his favorite, how much that meant to him, whether it meant something to him in his younger years or in his final we will never know. Something almost all of us can see in our selves, a reason why a lot of us come to read Hunter.

I wish I could remember the name of the interview that Terry did but anyways Terry said the dr. Always demended to be the centre of attention, and that this manafested in the dr trowing dinner rolls at people and so on.

Hunters favourite take is the most symbolic, the Author trying to grab the reimagined film.
