It's implied that Caleb's good nature is carried on through his grimwalkers and that Belos can't get rid of it. It looks like Caleb also had strong brotherly love for Philip and a need to protect him. This is expressed in Hunter through his protectiveness over both Gus and Luz.

Hunter has got to be one of my favorite characters

King just running to jump on Gus' back. That tiny little detail makes my day. Also Gus breaking down crying first gets me every time. Not because it shows he's the youngest, but because Gus was literally trying to be there for everyone much like Luz was. When Luz had her entrance exams, Gus (though sure she'd fail) was still going to be supportive of her failure. Gus grew to be protective of Willow when "Caleb" showed up. Even though he was still initially suspicious of Hunter, Gus gave him food and tried to have a heart to heart with him in the illusions. And Gus was carrying King around when King couldn't get up. Gus made sure Hunter was with them when that creepy kid started using his abomination powers. He really tried to keep it together but can't find a bright side this time. He needs a hug!

I honestly love how Hunter acts either extremely hurt or gets angry when people call him "The Golden Guard." Now, that's some character growth.

It’s a little thing but I love that Hunter was comforting Gus in the last image of the season when Luz goes to see her mom. Really goes to show much he grew to care about him and how he sees himself as an older brother type figure for Gus at this point.
