Then again, it wouldn't be the weirdest African colony...Duchy of Courland and Semigallia (now Latvia) started a colony in 1651 on what's now Kunta Kinteh Island in the Gambia River and would later gain St. Mary Island (now the Gambia's capital Banjul). This colony was lost as well as well as their Caribbean colony Tobago when the Duchy's neighbors took advantage of their weak defense during the Northern Wars
