That feeling when even a block of wood is more successful than you are

it's funny how when peter was being cut out of the tree it look like where a real baby would come out, and how he looked before being carved looked almost like the tree did give birth to him.

I always feel bad for the parents in these stories. They long for a child and finally get get their wish only for the kid to go into the world before they even had a chance to spend time together.

Hot embers seems a popular diet in these stories. I should try it.

Exactly my thought. My guess is that, the oxen didn't know where he was buried either. The father goes to the place and the oxen followed him.

I’ve wondered this too. My opinion is that the embers represent the true essence of the 12 states of consciousness, true enlightenment.

Wooden Peter's only weakness is a banana peel.

The princess looks a little bit like me in real life.

Why do they call it a wheelbarrow when it's obviously a plow?

In the Hungarian version it's a plow, so I guess the translation was just messed up (I'm Hungarian)

@@natalien.9528 Well, fairytales were always told as a collection of many smaller self-contained narrative motiefs and a lot of those are probably much older than Christianity in Hungary. People probably rearranged some of them into this format in Christian times as sort of a memory aid to help remember the new testament by heart

I read a similar story about a robot boy named Elik, who was made by a scientist named Prof. Gromoff and wished to become human.

Has anyone else watched so many Hungarian folk tales at this point that when the regular elements show up like magic ember eating animals, magic trees, and seeking your fortune as a young protagonist you're just like "Yup. Checks out. Hope he finds a blonde princess."?

For some reason, the beginning of this story reminds me of the story called the Little Snow Girl. An older, farming couple who loved and were loved by their community but couldn't have children themselves. To cheer his wife up, he went out into the night and made a little girl out of snow despite freezing his hands. An incredible likeness, he woke his wife up the very morning to show her. Wishing for what they didn't have, his wife cried; both in joy of the gift, but the sorrow of reality. To the couple's surprise, the snow girl immediately started to move around, laugh and talk like a normal child. At this, the couple was happy because she was just like the other children in their town. But there was a catch, one the snow child often told the couple, 'I cannot eat warm porridge or go inside the warm house, for I will melt and become a puddle.' With reluctance, the mother smashes some ice into a bowl for the snow child to eat, while the father makes her a bed out of snow. They say goodnight and it goes on like that for a while. When it neared Christmas, the mother pleaded with their snow child to come out of the cold (seriously, what wonderful parent wouldn't?) But it was the same. The mother begs her husband to bring the snow girl inside and he finally complies. The next morning, the couple tried to surprise their daughter with the Christmas presents, only to find a melted puddle where she lay. Thinking she killed her child the mother cries with her husband until they hear familiar laughter. As it turns out, the snow child miraculously became a flesh and blood child. From then on, they lived happily ever after. And this is just one of these kinds of stories I've read about. Another was titled Rain Babies. ^^

We have a fairytale about girl made of snow. She was fine during winter, but when the spring came she wanted to play with other girl. And one of the traditional fun activity was to jump over bonfire. She jumped, evaporated in the air and became mist. 😢

Well... I know story with similar begining but wooden boy is always hungry. He eats everything in house, neighbors, and then his parents. Then he goes away to find something to eat, and he eats everything and everyone who he meets. Finally he finds a cabbage field and starts to eat it. Then the owner of the field, old woman sees it and kills him with the gardening tool.

This kind of stories usually is an embellished story of a famous person at the time, something like those Chuck Norris meme.

For parents that wanted a child so badly, it seems he spent all of one day with them.

It was such a cute detail when he came back to life and his hair opened like a flower.

Did the narator really say, "when he was tree days old... " or am I imagining things? This is a very wish-fufilling story. If only our loved ones could be put back together and brought back to life if they died too young. For that matter, if only people who want a child and would be good parents, but can't seem to have one could carve a son or daughter out of wood and have him/her come to life! I like this one!

This was a far better ending than the story of wooden child Otesánek from my country. It begins with a woodcuter finding a piece od wood in the shape od human baby. He brings it home to his wife. She is happy to finally have a kid so she give it clothes, a name and she sings about sweet poridge she is going to make. Otesánek ask about that poridge. Woman is happy the child came to life And begins to feed him. Otesánek eats everything in the house and at last he eats his mother too. Woodcuter comes home just to be eaten too. Otesánek then go trough the village eating everything and everyone. At last he finds an old granny. Otesánek goes "I ate sweet poridge, I ate a loaf od bread, I ate a sack od potatoes, I ate my mom, I ate my dad, I ate the horse with a cart, I ate a merchant with his bull, I ate the butcher with his shop and I will eat you too." Granny asks him to repeat it for she Is geting deaf. Otesánek bends closer but granny slice his belly open with a hoe. People comes out alive and happy.

These folktales always progress into a scene that has nothing to do with the last scene. It's like the story is ever evolving in the same tale. How it began has nothing to do with how it ended ever.

I can see roots from bible stories, Pinocchio obvs in this particular story, star constellations (the 'plough'), resurrection..so much symbology in all these stories. From each culture,myths, legends,fairy tales; Titans, silica beings, mystical beasts, tricksters demons,angels n fairies- even references to 'Ancient man' compared to modern man-royal family bloodlines,genetic diversity..physical colouring,eye shapes,size... I just cant stop watching these Hungarian folktales! Delighted ive found them thankyou so much xx

I really ship Peter and the princess xD It’s the first non-blonde princess I see in this stories that have a happy ending lol

The concept of the woodcutter making a boy out of wood for his wife reminds me of another interesing tale: The Czech fairytale of Otesánek (Little Otik). The movie by Jan Svankmajer is worth a watch.

As a kid i used to watch those for a long time when they have been show on tv. Good lord those are old but they always manage to make them entertaining. These thruly bring me back to my childhood.
