And fortunately for the singers of this song, "H" doesn't always make a sound at all, in words like "HONOR" and "HONEST," not to mention between C and either L or R, like in "CHLORINE" and "CHRISTMAS," but does make special sounds with other words, like "CHOCOLATE," "CHARLOTTE," "SHOE," "WHITE," "THIRSTY," and "THEN."

Let me settle this. It all started when the Semites had a letter known as 'cheth' meaning 'fence' in Hebrew. The pictograph looked like a quadrilateral figure 8 and provided a sound of either a hissing cat or a gargle. However, the Greeks did their version called 'eta' with a long E sound. The capital and lowercase forms resemble an uppercase H and a small N. To find a character for a breathing sound, they either cut the letter in two and left out the right side or used the quadrilateral 8. But finally, the Romans made it their own and extended the line upwards on the n-looking letter and, at long last, gave both forms a breathing sound!

It's because the name of h in English is derived from Old French, in turn derived from Vulgar Latin, in turn derived from original Latin; its original Latin name was most likely "aha", but that became "aka" in VL which then became "atch" in OF which then became "aitch" in English. In German the letter is called "ha".

Is there a reason why Between the Lions never did an episode in which Lionel performs the act of sawing Cleo in half using a battery-operated chainsaw with Theo as the announcer, and Leona couldn't be there "because she had to go be with a friend" when she really was in the other half of the box providing the feet (the act works in that the box has two compartments, one half of which has another woman hiding inside who pushes out her feet), and one does not see Leona until after the box is put away and she comes in where she usually does (where nobody who hasn't read how the act really works won't guess that Leona was there the whole time) and says "Sorry I couldn't be here. I hope I didn't miss anything." for Lionel to say "It would have been too scary for you. Maybe when you get older, you can be involved with what I performed." (when much like the viewers know BB The King of Beasts and Tammy Lionette are really Theo and Cleo, the viewers who know how sawing a woman in half works would know that Leona was absent because the feet were really those of Leona.)

It's true. H has no /h/ sound in its name, nor does R have a /r/ sound or W have a /w/ sound. However, H has a /ch/ sound in its name, and "ch" has an H in it. Also, R has an /ar/ sound and "ar" has an R. Finally, W is pronounced "double U" because U and V used to be the same letter, looking like a V and being called "U." "VV," which made the /w/ sound, eventually became one letter, and U and V became two different letters.

And historically, some English dialects (like the English spoken in Ireland) _used_ to pronounce the letter H's name as "haitch"; as the language evolved, the starting sound dropped away.

I am hung up on "H" And the hard-to-learn "huh" sound it makes Every time I hear "huh" I lose hope And the heavy heart aches I am hassled and fed up Can't hold my head up 'Cause "H" makes me howl like a hound I am hung up on "H" And can't handle that "huh, huh, huh" sound Now, the sounds of most letters Are found in their names "T" goes "tuh" "J" goes "juh" "K" goes "kuh" But "H" doesn't play By the rules of that game Why doesn't "H" go "ay" or "chuh"? Why a letter called "H" Makes a "huh" sound I'm heartless to say Heartless to see "Huh huh huh" "H" sounds like it's laughing at me I'm harassed by its cackles "H" raises my hackles Its "huh huh" has me in a huff Yes, I'm hung up on "H" Huh huh huh... I've had enough Yes, I'm hung up on "H" Huh huh huh... I've had enough!
